WDN Elite 13: La Serna makes move to No. 3

Above: Corey Collins and Cantwell are up to No. 5 in this week's Whittier Daily News Elite 13.
Whittier Daily News Elite 13
1. La Habra (2-0) -- The Highlanders, also ranked No. 1 in CIF-SS Southwest Division ran their streak against non-division I opponents to 49 with a 28-19 victory over La Mirada. The streak will remain intact since they travel to Cerritos College against arguably the best Division I team in the state - two-time Pac-5 champion Servite. The question is how will La Habra do in this step-up game, which is the first of three against D-I opponents. The Highlanders follow with games against Orange Lutheran and St. John Bosco in the coming weeks.
2. St. Paul (1-0) -- The Swordsmen, who were off last week, are also No. 2 in the Western Division. St. Paul features one of the top running attacks in the area, which should carry themselves in nonleague play. The real tests come later in the Mission League.
3. La Serna (2-0) -- So much for those graduation losses that was supposed to spell doom for the Lancers. La Serna, which was 11-2 last season, has picked up where it left off, outscoring its first two opponents, 74-21.Quarterback Frankie Palmer has accounted for eight TDs the first two weeks. This week the Lancers, ranked No. 5 in the Southeast Division, look for some payback against Bonita, which ended their playoff run last season.
4. Santa Fe (1-1) -- The Chiefs showed they aren't as bad as their 52-0 loss to 2010 Arizona champ Hamilton during Week 0, but are they as good as last week's 42-26 victory over Warren last week. Finally somewhere in between. They get another test on Friday when they travel to St. John Bosco.
5. Cantwell (2-0) -- The Cardinals got a mixed review last week, jumping on Schurr for 16-0 in the first quarter before playing sluggish in the second half for a 22-0 victory. The good was quarterback Tim Walsh, who threw for 228 yards and three TDs. They get Baldwin Park this week.
Others: 6. Montebello (2-0), 7. Whittier Christian (1-1), 8. California (1-0), 9. La Mirada (0-2), 10 Pioneer (0-1), 11. El Rancho (1-1), 12. Whittier (1-0), 13. Schurr (0-1).

@just saying
I don't know if you recall but St. Paul lost to Bishop Amat by one point that year in triple over time. Their starting QB , and starting RB were out of the game. One of the best games I have witness in a long time at the high school level (in the Whittier area).
There is a difference but not as big as you say. On any given friday anything can happen.
class - the interesting thing is St Paul won a D3 championship in 2007 - and STILL lost to Bishop Amat who had their worst season in history! Sorry - there is just a BIG gap. BIG
@class
Sorry but St. Paul would not benefit from playing 6 PAC 5 teams in the preseason.
Yes I've also been to the ST Paul gym and wow is it packed with banners, with the newest one being 2007 CIF champs. I like the hall of fame wall they got going in back of the bleachers. So much tradition there at the pit it gives me the chills when i go to a game there. I just wish they get back up to there potential next year and schedule 6 D1 preseason teams
@stop laughing-
You submitted your post while I was scribing my rebuttal.
Let me just say this to you- yes, I realize St. Paul could get an invitation to the State Championship games. And let me also say I won't be watching anything less than DIVISION IV football once league play begins. I respect all the history that school's football program has done- I've seen all the banners in the gym and it's impressive. The problem around the Whittier area is, most people don't understand where their leagues stand. BUT I GET IT! I UNDERSTAND THESE PARENTS HAVE A RIGHT TO BE PROUD OF THEIR KIDS!!!
Del Rio (Whittier, Santa Fe, Cal, La Serna, etc.) - D 7
Suburban (La Mirada, Norwalk, etc.) - D 7
Freeway (La Habra, Sonora, etc.) - D 6
Whittier Christian - D 11
Catch my drift?
-And I left out St. John Bosco in my previous post as a top-tier team; my bad.
@thomas:
Actually, I'm not a Servite fan. I enjoy watching top-tier football. Let me give you some examples of "top-tier"-
Long Beach Poly
Mater Dei
Rancho Santa Margarita
Servite
Amat
Concorde De la Salle
St. Paul
Gardena Serra
St. Francis
Sherman Oaks Notre Dame
Loyola
Now, notice there's no La Habra? Why? It's just not the same. Yes some teams have down years and have to rebuild. Not long ago, Mater Dei was running So Cal and at the top, but right now it's Servite. And are you REALLY going to knock Servite for the whooping they got in the STATE Championship game? REALLY? Are you saying someone else in So Cal could have done a better job? De La Salle is a FORCE! I was pulling for all the Southern Section teams. If La Habra was there, I would have cheered for them. All I'm saying is they'll NEVER be in a State Championship game as long as they're in DIVISION VI. If I'm not mistaken, the lowest division represented in the State Championship games last year was Gardena Serra and they're DIVISION IV (four). So, that only leaves one team locally (based on that FACT) who could possibly get an invitation to represent local area teams. IF you know you're football, you'll know which school that is.
So, if you like walking around with your chest all pumped up for DIVISION VI football (LOL), that's your prerogative, as cute as it is. Am I a Servite fan? No, I respect them and what they're doing in their division and the competition they face.
See you Friday at Cerritos College. I'll be the one "Still Laughing" at the game.
@Still Laughing
Actually you really do not know much about the CA State Football System. As a participant in the SS Western Division, St. Paul could actually qualify for the State Championship game in Division II if they ran the table and were acknowledged as having knocked out many programs far larger than they are. Before you start laughing again about an inferior title, it was the Division II crown that Servite won in 2009. You should know more about what you say before you show your true A$$...
Still laughing:
I'm guessing you're a Servite fan? Yea they are running good right now but wait till they go to the state bowl and get SMASHED yes SMASHED by a REAL POWER house De La Salle team AGAIN... need i say more? NO!
@supporter-
Either you're from an inferior program and trying to set St. Paul up to get jumped all over or you really are a supporter and don't realize you're going to get clowned by all the locals for posting that; mostly because the locals around here don't realize the inferior divisions their schools play in.
Based on what I've seen already and about to see this weekend (with Servite and La Habra), there will be ONE school in the area who will be derserving of some respect (and won't get it because of who they are simply because there are haters out there) based on who they play IN LEAGUE AND DIVISION. I saw Servite hand Amat their you-know-what's last Friday and will be going back to Cerritos College on Friday night to watch them hand the "Powerhouse" that is La Habra get it WORSE than Amat did. When it's all said and done, LH will go deep in their respective division because it is what it is- Division SIX. Be proud of your rings though, you'll never see a State Championship game as long as you're in D-VI.
ST Paul will go undefeated, losing just one game and that would be to St Francis, and will win CIF this year.... just saying
If this reposts i am sorry, i tried once and didn't seem to go thru.
La Habra is facing a tough schedule, no doubt about it. They didn't expect la mirada to put up the fight they did. What's scary for La Habra is that LM put up 400+ yards on offense. What will Servite, OL and SJB do? But no matter, La Habra will win the Freeway league easily. And their 5th title in a row.
La Serna has not face a quality opponent yet. In Bonita they will. I predict Bonita by 14, maybe more.
I'd hate to be La Mirada this week after the beatdown Amat took last week!
I would hate to be La Habra this week... they are going to get smothered
Servite 55 LH 6
