Friday recap: Chaminade leaves St. Paul blue, Santa Fe rocks El Rancho, La Serna and Cal also win

Well, we should have a new No. 1 in the area, after St. Paul dropped a 31-6 setback at Chaminade and La Habra returned to form with a 39-0 win over Sunny Hills. We also Santa Fe strut its stuff in a 39-21 win over El Rancho. And how about Schurr, which may have been 0-5 in nonleague play, but they are 1-0 in the Almont League.
Here's a brief recap of Friday's Games:
Chaminade 31, No. 1 St. Paul 6 -- The host Eagles turned the Swordsmen as blue as their field, although this one was a bit closer than the score. The Swordsmen had 295 yards, but only got two fields goals on four drives inside the Eagles' 20. But overall, it was just too much Logan Scott, who threw for 197 yards and three TDs, and running back Terrell Newby, who had 180 yards rushing with one TD.
No. 2 La Habra 39, Sunny Hills 0 -- Nothing like a return to Freeway League play to bring the Highlanders back to form. Sean Sparling threw for 175 yards and two TDs to lead La Habra, which should be back atop the area ratings next week.
No. 3 California 17, Pioneer 7 -- Gabriel Lozano rushed for 151 yards, including a 70-yard TD run and the Condors set up an early-league showdown against Santa Fe next week with a victory over the Titans, who are now 0-6.
No. 4 La Serna 35, Whittier 6 -- OJ Medina rushed for 155 yards and three touchdowns and the Lancers showed they will battle to keep the title they won last season. Whittier lost its third consecutive game after starting 3-0.
Bishop Montgomery 24, No. 5 Cantwell Sacred Heart 21 -- Didn't see this coming, especially after the Cardinals looked efficient in last week's 45-21 win over Whittier Christian. But Cantwell, tying it with five minutes left, made a nice rally before being done in by Jonathan Kim's 20-yard field goal with nine seconds left.
Santa Fe 39, El Rancho 21 -- So much for how being outscored 151-0 in three games would effect the Chiefs' psyche. Coach Jack Mahlstede said his team would be ready to rock-n-roll by league, and Santa Fe proved it with an 18-point win. The Chiefs got two interceptions in the fourth quarter, one for a TD by Marcos Gomez to improve to 2-4 and 1-0. They now prepare for Cal, which will be one piece of the Del Rio League elimination tournament.
Schurr 7, Bell Gardens 0 -- How 'bout the Spartans? Schurr, ,after struggling in nonleague play are now tied for first in the Almont League. Bradley Powell's 47-yard jaunt in the first quarter was the only score.
San Gabriel 48, Montebello 17 -- Three weeks ago, the Oilers, aftr starting 2-0 and challenging Arroyo before losing on a late TD, looked like Mid-Valley contenders. But they are now 0-4 after being blitzed by the Mats.
La Mirada 55, Glenn 27 -- A nice victory for the Mats, who after opening the Suburban League with a loss to Bellflower, need to keep on winning. Andy Gramajo was big tonight, rushing for two TDs.
Whittier Christian 54, L.A. Baptist 0 -- The Heralds took care of business Friday. Next up is a trip to Mid-Valley No. 1 Maranatha, which also adds intrigue with Minutemen coach Peter Karavedas being a former Whittier Christian assistant. Ryan Morales led the Heralds with three TDs on Friday.

St. Paul will make CIF this year. Marijon Ancich will sign a three years extension. The Swordsmen don't belong in the Western Division. They belong in the the Pac-5. CIF should transfer the Swordsmen to the Serra or Trinty league. JSerra should transfer to the Mission league!!!
Bosco Fans,
When was the last time you won a C.I.F title?? I am talking about football not soccer. Until you win a ring, quit bashing S.P and L.H! Year in and year out you guys are loaded with talent but can't do anything with it. Let's see if you even make the playoffs? Good Luck!!
SP beat Wilson in 04,48-20, LOL. Pretty impressive record haha
@ Bosco Brave, first of all it's funny how you come on this blog trying to bash the whittier area when your coaches recruit all the kids from this area (i.e. Whittier Redskins Pico Dons and La habra Lions haha) half the kids on your roster are from pico, whittier, and la habra! And you come on here trying to post like your team is big and bad, you have one player that is better than everyone right now and D1 material for college and with Bryce on your team this year you still will win only one game in your league! Your the pioneer high school of the Trinity league, never make playoffs and get all fired up if you win a game or two in league play, it can also be called the doormat of the league! If La Habra had their starting QB or the transfer they should have got, that wouldn't have been the score at all! Let see what the scores are when you play Servite and OLU!! Beleive me they will be able to get after your QB and rattle him just like Loyola did! So don't come on here talking like your big and better than anyone when you can't when in your league, and LH can't wait for the matchup next year against St. John Bosco trust me!!
@ prep dad, don't think that Chaminade is too good I saw the game on IBN st. paul is just little and weak, Chaminade would not own a team like LH like that, I went to a La Serna this past week and they are bigger than St. Paul! I really can't believe all the St. Paul people thinking their that good, they have no shot against LH or any good caliber team! Norwalk and schurr like teams are perfect for them!
Since you asked, Brave one... Win, lose or draw they scheduled them.

Lets see, La Habra fans made no excuses when they lost to Shurr in the play-offs... and the Bosco Braves last made the play-offs when? Yes, SP does belong in the lower divisions, but a school with only about 300 plus boys that's where they do belong.plus they haven't made the play-offs in recent seasons. This season Chaminade would
be one of the top three teams in the Trinity league.
SP played without 8 starters friday? Grades must've come out. SP wants nothin to do with la habra. Anchich is afraid of Mazzotta. Theyd rather play bottom feeders. When was the last time they played a D1 team?
It's funny to come onto these blogs that whittier and the SGv have and read all the comments made by the bloggers. So here is one more for the batch:
I have seen LH play when we smoked them a couple of weeks ago. I had read how they had played OL and Servite very tough, so I expected a good game. I was shocked to see that they were very weak. I am puzzled at how they could have played OL and Servite so close. I mean they looked very bad. I guess all teams have bad games, but aside from Porter at linebacker, LH is a lower tier team.
I knew nothing about St Paul's team until this weekend when I went onto IBN sports and saw the Chaminade game online. Wow, St Paul is even worse than LH. I would definately put St Paul a tier below LH. St Paul has no passing game, and looks very small overall. I think almost any D1 football program would smash on St Paul. Even JSerra, which is the weak link of our Trinity league, would beat up St Paul.
So there you have it. LH is weak, but St Paul is even weaker. If they played this year LH would win by at least 14 points.
The district has the final say in the realignment of a team into another division and with La Habra being the league cash cow it will never happen. Teams are to beat whomever is on their schedule non league really doesn't matter. Be happy where La Habra is at and enjoy the ride I know I am. I have known the Mazzottas for a long time and their views are now where as myopic as some of the La Habra posters on this blog. It is time for some of you youngsters to stop posting BS on the SP and LH side because fact of the matter is no one will ever now who would win until games are played vs one another. I for one respect both programs and believe that neither is better than the other because they don't play each other.I root for all area teams and hope success on all parts. Please don't post assumptions on this blog and educate yourself about realignment before you come on here and post imaginary situations .
La Habra could move up but it would take a vote by each member of the Freeway league to vote LH out, which would allow LH to apply for acceptance into another league.
As for St. Paul, after fans having been running their mouths for the duration of non-league about how great they are and how lesser of a program La Habra is because they can't compete with some of the top schools in California, it's ironic that the Swordsmen fall once they actually play some competition. The fact is that St. Paul played NO ONE in preseason. The combined record of their opponents was 9-24. Meanwhile, the team that St. Paul fans talk smack about, La Habra, well their opponents record was a combined 21-11.
Despite LH being in a weak league, they actually challenge themselves to get their players better and it shows when their players go on to play at D-1 colleges. Josh Quezada at BYU, Ronnie Hillman at SDSU, Ryan Winterswyk at Boise State, now with the Atlanta Falcons and next year it will be Aaron Porter at UCLA just to name a few.
And really Prep Dad? That game was in 2007. Jump four years ahead to present day and stop living in the past.
YEAH JUST LIKE NO LA HABRA FAN MADE THE EXCUSE WHEN THEY LOST TO SHURR.
I have talk to coaches at St.Paul and this is the last year of contracts for our pre season games. Next year will be a whole different schdule.Amat, la mirada will be back. They would love to play La Habra and Santa Fe also. Lets see what happens.
I find some of these comments to be laughable at best. Let's not forget that Mazzota, a St. Paul alumnus, is doing a great job at La Habra and winning games. For all you people that think La Habra is moving up, think again the district will not allow it. The only way La Habra moves up is if the entire league moves up and don't count on that either. As a good friend of Mazzotta I am proud of what he has accomplished but he needs to go to a bigger and better school. He himself has said that his lower levels are struggling and once this senior class graduates La Habra is in for a retooling process, big time.
Really.. all you st. paul fans are ridiculous!! You don't wanna give excuses but yet you love to bring em up! And then you talk about LH all the time about how there league is so weak, yeah everyone already knows their not in a great league, but st. paul is in a league that they don't belong in wouldn't you agree?! Of course not, because you can't see it and have too much pride to admit it! But LH would fair much better in that league and division then you guys and those are just the facts!! And you want excuses, try playing 3 of the top teams in the state of California with your back up QB like LH did, and almost beat two of them! Ohhhh... no one likes to talk about that do they, that has been the least talked about topic this season, but because their LH they just play through it don't complain and just keep competing! So St. Paul people really need to shut their mouth and try and win more than one game in league (cause Catherdal will prolly be the only one haha!) And to the cupcake competition, yeah LH smashed a weak Sunny hills team, too bad during preseason when LH was playing real teams you were playing teams like Norwalk, Schurr talk about cupcake competition and Ayala isn't good at all either, what do you think LH would do to those teams?! They wouldn't even waste time scheduling games their preseason is there tough part of the season unlike st. paul playing weak teams! Where is that getting them? hmmm... losing in league haha
And just so you know Mazzota will play st. paul ANYTIME trust me!!! It would be his pleasure BRING IT!! My only question is why would he want to weaken his preseason schedule he's not like St. Paul lol
Actually, it was eight starters, but you're right no excuses. The Swordsmen will live to play another day.
Good luck to all the area teams.
St. was missing 5 or 6 starters due to injuries. This not an excuse just reality. They would've had to play a near perfect game, but with those players missing it was not to be. The Mission League is a legit league with four or five teams that can win it. La Habra's not so much. We'll never know would win between SP and La Habra because Mazzota won't let it happen. Too bad.
To make an accurate rating on the number one area team, we need to see how St. Paul would handle that fearsome powerhouse, Sunny Hills. La Habra fans should be ashamed of themselves, feeling that a bully win over such a cupcake opponent qualifies them for a supreme ranking.
Dear Coach Scott, It's time to step down and take the wing - T with you. Your wing T hasn't worked since 1988. P.S. don't forget to take your offensive coordinator with you.
St. Paul should never be ranked above La Habra.
Also, typical Cantwell. Great win over WCHS then they come home and stink up the joint against Montgomery. The team has zero consistency.
COME ON, ONE WEEK AT NUMBER 1, AND THEY STUMBLE AND FALL,,,,,IM SURE THAT THE ST PAUL KIDS WENT OUT THERE AND GAVE A GOOD EFFORT, BUT LA HABRA NEEEDS TO BE PUT BACK INTO THE 1 SPOT......LA HABRA WOULD HAVE NO PROBLEM AT ALL PUTTING AWAY THIS ST PAUL TEAM IF THEY WENT HEAD TO HEAD...
It was a long drive home. I have to say that as good as we have looked in nonleague, tonight we just looked like a different team. Yes I know Chaminade is a good team, but we just seemed out of sync.
This was our first loss, and I really think our only loss in the regular season. We will make the play offs as the #2 team out of the Mission league, but this night is a tough one.
And no, there is no better team in the Whittier area, let's not go there. We were just flat out beat tonight, but a good team bounces back, and we will do just that.
