WDN Elite 13: St. Paul leads heading into Mission League play

| | Comments (16) |

Here's this week's Whittier Daily News Elite 13 football rankings, which as St. Paul at the top for the second consecutive week:
Note: Rankings include rank, last week's ranking and record.
1. (1) St. Paul (5-0) -- How good are the Swordsmen? We get a better barometer this week when they open up Mission League play with a trip to Chaminade in a battle of the top two teams in the CIF-SS Western Division. St. Paul has won its five against teams that are a combined 6-22.
2. (2) La Habra (2-3) -- The Highlanders should be well rested after one of their worst efforts in recent years -- a 41-6 loss to St. John Bosco. I don't expect them to lose for a while, especially in Freeway League play, which begins Friday against Sunny Hills.
3. (4) California (4-1) -- The Condors, with a defense that has yielded just 56 points in 5 games, might be the frontrunner in the Del Rio League title chase. They get Pioneer this week before facing Santa Fe next week at Pioneer High School in what might be a championship decider.
4. (5) La Serna (4-1) -- Don't sleep on the Lancers, who will definitely be in the mix with running back OJ Medina and linebacker Craig Jones leading the defense.
5. (6) Cantwell (3-2) -- The Cardinals had their best offensive production of the season in a 45-21 victory over Whittier Christian last week. They will need it in the coming weeks as they get into the meat of their Del Rey League schedule.
Others: 6. (7) La Mirada (2-4), 7. (8) El Rancho (4-1), 8. (3) Whittier Christian (3-3), 9. (9) Santa Fe (1-4). 10. (10) Montebello (2-3), 11. (11) Whittier (3-2), 12. (12) Pioneer (0-5), 13. (13) Schurr (0-5).

This El Rancho team reminds me of the team from ten years ago when they had guys like Anthony Gonzalez, Ernesto Guerrero, Felix Esqueda, and Adrian Medrano. But this time they have the continuity of a coaching staff. This team can be very good!

"A Fan" and "Swordsman",
This is not the Chaminade of old, this is a Chaminade program that can play and beat solid Pac 5 teams, put it this way "A Fan", that St John Bosco team that mopped the field with your La Habra team, well Chaminade is about the same caliber, they would handle both La Habra and St. Paul, maybe even in the same night.

@ A FAN: "It's not LH's fault there in that league or division! They have been moving up divisions for the past 4 years" Division(S) would mean multiple, in the last 4 years the went from VII to VI so that would have to be they moved up a division in the last 4 year..... Unless they use to have VI.75 VI.50, VI.25 and now at VI....... C'mon man, if your so good with LH tell Mazzotta to accept the invitation and play the game...... THE GAME NEEDS TO BE PLAYED!!!!!!!
no excuses, just play the damm game......

@ St. Paul Fan 29, just so you know I do know football and I was at the game when Schurr beat LH in 2006, one key point, that is part or the game and you failed to mention is that Schurr won 9-7 and they knocked out Morales the starting qb for LH in the 1st quarter! Umm... that does make a huge difference in high school football especially when the second string qb comes in and throws three interceptions! But I'm not gonna lie that was a once in a lifetime team with Schurr high school with great coaching and kids! I'm happy they won! But just so you know Morales came back the next year with a 14-0 season and LH hasnt lost a CIF since! And just so you know you can't compare teams from now and 2007, it's idiotic! And Schurr that year would of beat St, Paul! Don't ever call me uneducated on the topic of football or I will make you look dumb on this blog!

@ Prep Fan, it's pathetic that all you have is the PAST to talk about when LH is about the now, this past decade and the future! Where would you want to send your son right now? Be honest, to a team that won in the 1960's and gets smashed in their league now and every year has big aspirations of winning but doesn't, or to a team that does WIN and is moving up and everyone can see that their program is moving in the right direction?! Don't ignorant man up!

@ Whittier, your just a homer that can't get off st.paul balls! And the best part is that after the next five weeks st.paul will not be getting attention, because you don't get attention when you lose idiot! Im not a LH parent either just a fan of the area that can see talent when it arises! If st. paul was good as you wish they were I would say it if it were true but it's NOT! They don't belong in that league cuz their the doormat and they need to move down but pride and history and tradition wont let them haha..!! More like not wanting to get embarrased! So get your life together and let me know the score after the Chaminade game when you come up with some more excuses!

Stfu already you irritate me just seeing your name on the blogs. Stop hating on St Paul cause from this point on, all attention is on us rather than LH cause of their weak league. Stop with this LH could beat St Paul thing cause you're just talking out of your a$$, just like you guys where about St John bosco and look what happened... 41-6 haha.. Yea you're just a LH parent thinking you know the history and tradition about St Paul! Leave our school out of your filthy mouth!! NEVER will LH be in a better or same division as St Paul hahaha you wish!

On a side note: game of the week ST PAUL vs Chaminade!

Fan STFU already...

It's pathetic when the only ammo u have is how great we played and lost to a D1 team...and thats all u have.
how many D1 cif titles do LH zero how many STATE zero...so remind me why ur talking. someday LH might get there...until then STFU . U have a hardon for SP I get it...u want to be a swordsmen... Fan really STFU!!!!!

@A NON FAN...Tell me this who won the game between Schurr vs La Habra in 07? I went to every Schurr game that year when my daughter's school won CIF. The LH team that year was better than this year's team. SP team this year is better than the Schurr team that won CIF. You are a uneducated fan that does not know what he is talking about. Start going to some games so that you can obtain some knowledge!

A Fan said:

@Swordsman, your the chump! Do you actually think St. Paul could beat LH? Cause if you do then just say your a homer and have no football sense!! It's not LH's fault there in that league or division! They have been moving up divisions for the past 4 years and still keep winning and pretty soon when they move past St. Paul that never wins in league (your only one will probably be catherdal) then what are you gonna say! Yeah their biggest games of the year are in the preseason but there's nothing they can do about that right now but keep winning, so CIF has no choice! So to compare the two teams is ridiculous cuz there is no comparison! LH would beat St. Paul in a easy win atleast 35-7 atleast! Don't you guys see that they were competing with the top teams in the STATE!!! Not Chaminade or St. Francis!! They would smash those teams! Where you would play Servite and the game would be over in the 1st quarter! So come back on this blog with some knowledge next time instead of just homer i love st. paul talk!

It's funny how a LH fan can come on here and bash my swordsmen after they get destroyed 41-6 by Bosco. Your "we play tough teams" has faded away chump. Lh will have no more quality games for the rest of the season. While most schools are now going into tough league play, LH now is pretty much done with their season. The Freeway league is a joke.

I'm not going to say we will kill Chaminade, because they are a true quality team. But we will be victorious, even if it's by one point.

LH fans need to stop comparing themselves to the real football teams in the Whittier area, and just fade away.

Have to agree with you regarding Cal, to a certain extent. The Troy game was their 2nd game of the year and the passing game was awful. I've seen all of their games and while the passing game has improved, I'm still not sold that they can throw the ball, when they need to. Now, on the other side of the ball, they are pretty legit. The middle backer #52 Cardial has been having a very good year.

They still have not played anyone as of yet so it's tough to get a feel for how good they will finish in league. If they put a full 4 quarters together, they can win league.

Keep up the good work Steve, the blog looks great, just needs some exposure.

A Fan: OK, I'll bite. You are forgetting that La Serna lost 31-0 to La Mirada. No doubt a decent La Mirada team that is better than their record, but a 31-0 loss, which by any standards is a bad loss, and a bad loss always trumps a big win. Ask USC, which missed out of the BCS title game in back-to-back seasons with bad losses to Stanford (Harbaugh's first year) and Oregon State. While La Serna was losing 31-0, Cal won that night, so I leapfrogged them and they have won impressively the past two weeks, which is why they are ahead. By strength of schedule, Cal is 4-1 against teams that are 10-15; La Serna is 4-1 against teams 8-17-2. Those are very close strength of schedules. The difference is a 31-0 loss by La Serna. Yes, I have seen Cal play and while they are run first team, they are versatile within their run game.

@ Whittier, you can leave to the game as early as you want to get there.. But you might as well leave at halftime when Chaminade is smashing on St.Paul!! It's not even gonna be a game.. You're gonna need a little more than heart and passion to pull this one off! Like coaching, an effective offense, and to win maybe some LH players on your team haha! Chaminade 35 St Paul 6

@ Steve Ramirez, cal hi really ranked ahead of la serna and el rancho that are both ranked higher than them in the CIF polls????! See that's the kind of stuff that drives people nuts! Cal hi hasn't beaten any good teams this year, and the one descent team they do play in Troy they lose! But whoa they finished strong against Montebello haha! If Cal hi faces a team that can stop the run like la serna or Santa fe their done! They have no passing game whatsoever!! Have you seen them play Steve? The only reason they have won games is because of the weak teams they have played and they couldn't stop the run, but against Troy it was pathetic and Troy isn't even that good! But oh yeah I forgot it's how you play not who you play right steve? That's a joke!

St Paul will finally prove to everyone what they are made of. I will be there at chaminade (will leave at 4, due to LA traffic) it will be a close one but I still think the swordsmen can come up with the W if they play with passion and heart. Good luck to all area teams!

St Paul 21
Chaminade 17

It's gotta be one of the three but which is it? Is St. Paul overrated, or did Ayala get real good the week before playing St. Paul, or did St. Paul just have a terrible off night?
Looking at the St. Paul vs Ayala score, it looks like St. Paul will be in for a long night against Chaminade, if they are on the same level as Ayala [I'm not saying they are] it won't be close.

Can we grow up and start league play with good wishes for all of our local teams, instead of making immature comments.

You don't have to hide behind your false name, we know you are a St. Paul person.

Anyway, good luck against Chaminade, and good luck to all our local teams.

Now La Habra can coast through their pop warner league and make the playoffs. I don't see them being challenged again until maybe the second round of playoffs.
