Putting up a good front: La Mirada line lives up to tradition

| | Comments (3) |

LA MIRADA - An offensive lineman's world doesn't change much.
It consists mainly of an imaginary three-yard box, and it doesn't matter if the ball rests near the opponent's goal line, on the 50 or inside his team's own 10.
Success from this view comes from attitude and work ethic, and that's what La Mirada High School's starting front thrives on.
Quarterback Gerry Myres and running backs Johnny Hills and Andy Gramajo have received most of the glory for the Matadores, but the difference-makers have come up front where seniors Spencer Fox (6-foot-5, 265 pounds), Memo Monreal (6-0, 250) and Nathan Rodriguez (6-3, 260); juniors Hugo Correa (6-2, 245) and Chris Cisneros (6-2, 235) and sophomore Nofo Tii (6-2, 300) have paved the way for the Matadores' rebirth from an 0-3 start to be within two games of the program's second CIF-Southern Section Divisional title during the past three seasons.
"It's a good group of kids," said La Mirada coach Mike Moschetti, whose Matadores host top-seeded and 2010 champion West Covina at 7 p.m. on Friday in a Southeast Division semifinal. "They don't speak two words, but they just show up and work. That's who they are. They want to be the guys who show up and work and don't want a lot of publicity.
"They've done well all year long. There was a concern going into the year about the offensive line. But the more you practice, the more you work, the better you are going to get. And they've jelled and gotten better. They are by no means a finished product. We made a ton of mistakes last week. But they are the type of kids who get into the film room and want to learn and get better."

Porter sticking with Bruins..for now

The status of La Habra linebacker/running back Aaron Porter, who committed to UCLA

over the summer, hasn't changed in the wake of UCLA firing coach Rick Neuheisel Monday.
The senior, considered one of the top linebackers in the CIF-Southern Section, still is on board with the Bruins.
"Nothing has changed," La Habra coach Frank Mazzotta said. "He just wants to wait and see who they hire."
Porter, who rushed for 141 yards and made nine tackles in the Highlanders' 28-21 victory over Brea Olinda on Friday, will lead La Habra (9-3) in the Southwest Division semifinals when it hosts El Toro (11-1) at 7 p.m.
The Highlanders are seeking the school's fifth consecutive CIF-SS title and seventh overall.

Football: Whittier's Scott resigns

| | Comments (2) |

The list of area football coaching openings continues to grow.
Walter Scott, Whittier High School's coach the past 18 seasons, has resigned from that position, the school's assistant principal Juan Anzaldo confirmed Tuesday.
Scott, who graduated from Whittier, was 61-121-2 in a tenure that goes back to the early 1990s. His Cardinals, who were 0-10 in 2010, were 5-5 this season. They finished fourth in the Del Rio League with a 2-3 record.
"He's been associated with Whittier the past 23 years," Anzaldo said. "This is my first year (here) and he told me when I came aboard that this was likely his last season.
"He was excellent and always did a great job. He's very knowledgable and his athletes had no problems and always had the highest (grade-point average) at the school. He developed a great team of coaches and the teachers really like him.
"He left the program in good hands. Most of our players were juniors this year and we should return 85 percent of the team."
Anzaldo said the school is expecting to fill the position by January.
"We're looking for a coach with previous head coaching experience or one who is a defensive or offensive coordinator from a powerhouse school with a consistent winning record," he said. "We've already had 40 (applicants)."
Calls to Scott were not returned.

Two-Minute Drill: West Covina at La Mirada

| | Comments (12) |

Here is the two-minute drill for Friday's West Covina at La Mirada game in the Southeast Semifinals:

Football: Juarez out at Pioneer, but will remain as AD

| | Comments (11) |

Ramon Juarez, in his 15th season at Pioneer High School, has been relieved of his coaching dutes, Pioneer principal Monica Oviedo confirmed Monday.
Juarez, who will remain as the school's athletic director, was 65-88-1, including finishing last in the Del Rio League this season at 1-9.
Oviedo refused to answer any questions directly, but referred to an e-mail statement in which she said:
"It is with mixed feelings that we share with you that after 15 seasons, Ramon Juarez will no longer serve as head football coach at Pioneer High School. Ramon began his coaching career at Pioneer High School as an assistant in 1991, and was later promoted to head coach in 1997. His coaching legacy includes a Del Rio League championship in 1998, 2 CIF quarterfinal appearances in 1998 and 2002 as well as Del Rio League/All Area Coach of the Year honors in 1998 and NFL (high school) Coach of the Week honors in 1998 and 2003. Ramon is a man of tremendous character and integrity, who thrived in building positive relationships with countless young men and women through his role as head football coach. His knowledge of the game and respect from his peers in the coaching ranks is unparalleled. Ramon's effort, resilience, and commitment to the football players at Pioneer High School are deeply appreciated."
Calls to Juarez have yet to be returned.

WDN Touchdown Table: Your Predictions and ours

| | Comments (1) |

This season, I will give my predictions for all the area games from week to week. Want to play? Just add your projections and keep your tally and see how you match up.
Record (season total, last week): Ramirez (78-43, 3-2)
Last Week: It was a decent week. I let it ride too long on Cantwell. But who saw La Mirada's upset of Arcadia?
This week: We're down to the elite 3, with La Habra, La Mirada and La Serna still alive. All three, as you would expect, have tough games in the semfinals. I like La Habra against El Toro in the Southwest, but the Chargers are no pushover. La Mirada and La Serna, both in the Southeast, will be up against it. La Mirada gets top seed and 2010 champion West Coviina, which is still the heavy favorite to repeat. La Mirada already shocked one team in Arcadia, can they do it again? There's a chance with the way the Mats line is playing, but you have to go with the favorite and so will I, but it could be close. La Serna also has to play a perfect game. Remember, Muir destroyed Santa Fe, which beat the Lancers. My heart says to take La Serna, but after watching Muir take apart the Chiefs and seeing a 48-0 score over Diamond Ranch, makes me go with the Mustangs.
Here are this week's predictions:
Friday, Nov. 25

Southwest Division
El Toro (11-1 at La Habra (9-3), 7:30 p.m. -- La Habra
Southeast Division
West Covina (11-1) at La Mirada (8-4), 7:30 p.m. -- West Covina
Muir (8-4) at La Serna (9-3) at Cal HS, 7:30 p.m. -- Muir

Final three ready for the Final Four - La Habra, La Mirada and La Serna all at home for the semifinals

| | Comments (13) |

It will be home sweet home for the area's final three when they play in next week's CIF-Southern Section divisional semifinals. All three area teams -- La Habra in the Southwest and La Mirada and La Serna in the Southeast -- will be at home in their respective final fours.
La Habra, seeking its fifth division title and seventh overall, will host El Toro. It should be noted that Highlanders also received a break if it advances to the final, because their expected chief challenger - No. 1 Villa Park, was upset in the quarters, losing 35-7 to Tustin.
La Mirada, back in the semifinals after a year hiatus, host No. 1 West Covina, with La Serna, back in the semifinals for the second consecutive season, hosts Muir, which has outscored its first two playoff opponents, 87-7, including beating Del Rio League champ Santa Fe, 39-7, in the first round.
Who gets in? And what should be our feature game? I'm heavily leaning toward West Covina at La Mirada.
Here's next Friday's schedule:
Southeast Division

West Covina (11-1) at La Mirada (8-4)
Muir (8-4) at La Serna (9-3)
Southwest Division
El Toro (11-1) at La Habra (9-3)
All games are tentatively scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Friday Night Recap: The LAs have it as La Habra, La Mirada and La Serna advance to semifinals; Whittier Christian and Cantwell go down

| | Comments (4) |

What at night!
It paid Friday night if you're an area high school team with a name that begins with 'La,' as La Habra, La Mirada and La Serna all advanced to the semifinals with close victories in the quarterfinals. La Serna rallied in the final moment to beat Los Altos, 42-38; La Mirada held off Arcadia, 31-28; and La Habra, seeking its fifth consecutive divisonal title, won a surprising close game in a 28-21 victory over Brea Olinda. Whittier Christian and Cantwell bowed out with losses of 67-21 to Monrovia and 49-22 to Lompoc/Cabrillo, respectively.
Here's a brief rundown of each game.
Southeast
La Serna 42, Los Altos 38 --
Sophomore quarterback Frankie Palmer continues to play like a senior, accounting for 304 yards and four touchdowns, including scoring the game-winner with a 5-yard run with 1:06 to play. The Lancers, who lost to Bonita in the semifinals last season, held off a Los Altos drive at the end forcing a fumble inside their own six. They will host Muir at California High School on Friday. The Mustangs, who entered the playoffs as an at-large entry, followed up last week's victory over No. 2 Santa Fe by beat Diamond Ranch, 48-0.
La Mirada 31, Arcadia 28 -- Johnny Hills wasn't the Matadores No. 1 running back when the season began, but he showed his worth by rushing for 219 yards and two touchdowns as La Mirada advanced to the semifinals for the first time since winning the Southern Division in 2009. The Mats, who rallied back from a 28-10 deficit, will host top-seed and 2010 division champion West Covina in next week's semifinals. The Bulldogs routed Pasadena, 55-12.
Southwest
La Habra 28, Brea Olinda 21 -- It's back to the semifinals for the Highlanders, who used two third-quarter interceptions before holding off a furious rally against Brea Olinda. La Habra, seeking a fifth consecutive divisional title and its sixth overall, will host El Toro, which routed Yorba Linda, 58-20. Aaron Porter rushed for 114 yards and quarterback Sean Sparling threw for 115 yards to lead the Highlanders.
Mid-Valley
Monrovia 67, Whittier Christian 21 -- The Heralds were no match for the 2010 divisoin championships, who led 21-0 after the first quarter, 41-7 at halftime and 61-14 after three quarters. De'Shawn Ramirez ran for 129 yards and scored four touchdowns, including a 98-yard interception return, to lead Monrovia. Joel Rhone rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown in garbage time to lead Whittier Christian.
Northwest
Cabrillo/Lompoc 49, Cantwell 22 -- For the second consecutive season, a team from Lompoc did in the Cardinals. Cantwell, after committing five turnovers, where never in it, trailing 35-0 by halftime and 49-0 in the third quarter.Tim Walsh threw for 109 yards to lead the Cardinals.

It's getting down to the nitty-gritty of CIF-Southern Section football with five area teams looking to punch their tickets to next week's semifinals with quarter-final match-ups tonight. In the Southeast, La Mirada and La Serna take to the road, with games at Arcadia and Los Altos, respectively. La Habra, seeking its fifth consecutive divisional title, is also on the road, traveling to Brea Olinda, a team it beat 55-2 in Septemeber. Can the Highlanders repeat? Two area teams are at home: Cantwell Sacred Heart hosting Cabrillo of Lompoc in the Northwest and Whittier Christian getting 2010 champ Monrovia at Whittier College in the Mid-Valley, which is where I will be and tweet scoring plays and quarter updates. CIF-SS Playoffs: La Serna is back for more

| | Comments (0) |

Above: La Serna's OJ Medina, who has rushed for 1,346 yards and 17 touchdowns this season, leads the Lancers in Friday's CIF-SS Southeast Division quarterfinal playoff game against Los Altos. (Photo by Chris Burt / Correspondent)

There were those who believed La Serna High School's run to its first CIF-Southern Section football semifinal in more than 40 years last season was more of an aberration than the beginning of something special.
The Lancers, who basically returned only standouts OJ Medina at running back and Craig Jones at linebacker, believed otherwise and hope to prove it when they travel to Los Altos for a CIF-SS Southeast Division quarterfinal at 7:30 p.m.
"We thought going into the year we had a chance to be successful," said La Serna coach Margarito Beltran, whose Lancers tied for second in the Del Rio League behind champion Santa Fe and defeated Mayfair 47-34 in the first round of the playoffs. "We didn't know what the won-loss record would be at the end of the year. But we thought if we could get to the playoffs, we would have a chance to put some victories together."

Girls Basketball: Cardinals Rule

| | Comments (2) |

Above: Whittier High's Jeana Magana, left, and Yazmin Acosta help make the Cardinals an area power this season. (Leo Jarzomb / Staff Photographer)

The race for the Del Rio League girls basketball title has been painted Whittier High School red the past few seasons, and that's not expected to change this winter.
The Cardinals, who have won the league title each of the past four seasons - including a perfect 10-0 league mark twice since 2008-09 - are expected to stay atop their perch in the battle for league and area supremacy.
But Whittier, which returns two of its top three scorers, including one first team All-Area player, is expecting to receive challenges from St. Paul, which advanced to the division semifinals, and La Habra, which hovered around .500, to lead the pack of hopefuls.
El Rancho, Schurr, Cantwell and Whittier Christian also are expected to be improved.
The leader out of the gate will be the Cardinals, who went 21-7 and 10-0 last season to win a league title before exiting the CIF-Southern Section Division 2AA playoffs with a loss to West Ranch of Valencia.
The Cardinals hope to be back for more.
"We just want to continue what we've been able to establish (in recent years)," Whittier coach Willie Pittman said. "We have some key returners back and the girls know (after the past few seasons) expectations are much higher for them."

Boys basketball: Patience is a virtue - La Habra should shine late

| | Comments (2) |

Above: Ryan Hall, left, and Alex Imhof are two of the top players for La Habra High School this season. The Highlanders are the preseason No. 1 pick by the Daily News. (Keith Durflinger / Staff Photographer)

For the La Habra High School boys basketball team, it's not how the Highlanders start but how they finish.
It was like that last season for La Habra, which started slow and closed like a freight train in going 9-1 in the Freeway League and advancing to the CIF-Southern Section Division 3AA quarterfinals.
The same is expected in 2011-12. The Highlanders, like last year, are not expected to be super until they incorporate football players, including stars Aaron Porter and Brett Bartolone, who are expected to be busy during the football playoffs through the middle of December.
"We want to keep our head above water in December," La Habra coach Mark Stewart said. "When we get the football players back and get them up to speed, we should be really good."

WDN Touchdown Table: Your Predictions and ours

| | Comments (16) |

This season, I will give my predictions for all the area games from week to week. Want to play? Just add your projections and keep your tally and see how you match up.
Record (season total, last week): Ramirez (75-41, 3-4)
Last Week: Last week was my worst week of the season, missing on Muir over Santa Fe; La Serna over Mayfair, Cantwell over El Segundo and Pasadena over California.
This week: We have five teams left, with two games that are very intriguing. We get a Mid-Valley championship rematch when Whittier Christian entertains 2010 champ Monrovia at Whittier College. The Wildcats won easy last season, and while I expect a closer game, the advantage still goes to Monrovia, which still has 5-star recruit Ellis McCarthy in the middle. In the Southeast, the game of the week is La Mirada traveling to the 626 to face Arcadia, which some believe is the No. 2 team in the division behind West Covina. I wouldn't sell the Mats short this week. La Mirada has looked solid since starting 1-4 and should be up for the challenge. The question is how well they can handle Arcadia's speed. I'm going with the host Apaches, but it will be close.
Here are this week's predictions:
Friday, Nov. 25

Southwest Division
La Habra (8-3) at Brea Olinda (9-2), 7:30 p.m. -- La Habra
Southeast Division
La Mirada (7-4) at Arcadia (9-2), 7:30 p.m. - Arcadia
La Serna (8-3) at Los Altos (8-3), 7:30 p.m. - La Serna
Mid-Valley Division
Monrovia (8-3) vs. Whittier Christian (7-4) at Whittier College, 7 p.m. - Monrovia
Northwest Division
Lompoc Cabrillo (9-2) at Cantwell-Sacred Heart (8-3), 7:30 p.m. -- Cantwell

Friday Recap: The Final Five...La Habra, La Mirada, La Serna, Whittier Christian and Cantwell all win; Santa Fe and Cal lose

| | Comments (34) |

Just call them the Final Five.
It's down to the final five among area football teams after the first round of the CIF-Southern Section playoffs, with La Habra, La Mirada, La Serna, Whittier Christian and Cantwell all winning. Santa Fe, despite being the No. 2 seed, proved to be no match for speedy Muir, and Cal couldn't get up witih Pasadena, losing 57-43, in one of the more shocking scores of the night. La Habra won in a cakewalk over 4-6 Kennedy, with La Serna and Cantwell winning on the road.
Here's a brief look at Friday's games:
La Habra 47, Kennedy 14 -- The Highlanders used their usual three of Aaron Porter, Brett Bartolone and Sean Sparling to roll in a Southwest Division first round. It should be just as easy next week with a return trip to Brea Olinda. I don't expect the Highlanders to be tested until the finals when Villa Park is the obvious opponent.
La Serna 47, Mayfair 34 -- The Lancers have been one of the better teams in the Southeast Division all season, and showed it Friday with a solid win over the Monsoons. OJ Medina, the usual leader, rushed for 194 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead the Lancer into the second round, where they will be at traditonal-power Los Altos for a shot to advance to the semifinals for the second consecutive season. I wouldn't bet against the Lancers.
Muir 39, Santa Fe 7 -- The Chiefs, hoping to give long-time coach Jack Mahlstede a nice retirement gift, were no match for the Mustangs, who looked like a bunch of thoroughbreds, jumping out to a 26-7 halftime lead and we're never threatened.
Pasadena 57, California 43 -- Jim Arnold would have probably been satisfied with a 43-point effort from the Condors' offense, ,but it wasn't enough to stop the Bulldogs' Brandon Cox, who threw for 402 yards and six TDs.Cal's running back trio of Lawrence Gomez, Gabriel Lozano and Justin Dankert combined for 408 yards rushing and six TDs.
La Mirada 35, Crescenta Valley 30 -- Quarterback Gerry Myres continued his solid second half, throwing for 229 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Mats into the second round. it's gets tougher in round two with a road trip to Arcadia, which might be the division's second-best behind West Covina.
Whittier Christian 40, El Monte 16 -- The Heralds look like they are ready to make another trek to the finals after routing the up-start Lions. QB Daniel Chacon continued a solid season by throwing for 233 yards and three scores. We now get a 2010 championship rematch as the Heralds host Monrovia -- and 5-star prospect Ellis McCarthy -- in the second round.
Cantwell 35, El Segundo 30 -- Senior Adam Aguirre, who had played second fiddle to fellow senior Corey Collins this season, stepped up at the right time, catching six passes for 205 yards and three scores to lead the Cardinals to a much-needed win on the road. Cantwell will now play for a second consecutive trip to the semifinals next week.

CIF-SS Playoffs Outlook: We break down each division knowing that one thing is all about guaranteed - La Habra will be the only champion

| | Comments (7) |

We should see this again this year, with La Habra winning another CIF-SS Southwest Division championship.

Playoffs? Playoffs?
Well ask and you shall receive, so here here is our breakdown for the CIF-Southern Section playoffs, where we look at the divisions involving area teams:

SOUTHEAST
Area teams: Santa Fe, California, La Serna and La Mirada.
Projected final four: West Covina, La Mirada, Mayfair and Santa Fe.
Finals: West Covina over Santa Fe.
Steve's take: This is basically West Covina's to lose. The Bulldogs are the 2010 champion and have no apparent weaknesses, at least when you match them up with the rest of the bracket. But they should get test in the semifinals, where we have them matched up with La Mirada. The switched turned on for the Mats during the middle of last month and will be a tough out. On the bottom half, how can you not like Santa Fe? Joey Davis is the it factor and will make a difference Friday against Muir, and against Diamond Ranch in the second round and Mayfair in the semifinals. It would nice to predict a first title for Jack Mahlstede, who is retiring after 41 years at the end of the season. But West Covina is just too good.
MID-VALLEY
Area teams:
Whittier Christian
Projected Final Four: Covina, Monrovia, San Dimas and Arroyo.
Finals: San Dimas over Covina.
Steve's take: This is another division that looks like a one-team party, which that being a Covina coronation. But things are not always as they appear. Whittier Christian is the lone area team, and while I like the Heralds to beat El Monte on Friday, I can't see them taking out Monrovia and 5-star recruit Ellis McCarthy in the quarterfinals. Covina looks to have too much in the upper bracket, although McCarthy will make it close in the semifinals. The bottom half is San Dimas' to lose, and should walk into the finals with ease, and I like the Saints in a rematch over the Colts. I've always believed the losing team has the advantage in a rematch. Besides how can you not like Coach Z?
SOUTHWEST
Area team:
La Habra
Projected Final Four: La Habra, Villa Park, Cypress and Troy.
Finals: La Habra over Villa Park.
Steve's take: The road is set in La Habra's battle for five. The Highlanders, seeking their fifth consecutive CIF-SS title, and their seventh overall, is pretty simple, at least until the finals. I don't think anyone can match the Highlanders' Aaron Porter, who Servite couldn't block, and Brett Bartolone, who is La Habra's big-play variable. The other half of the bracket is No. 1 seed Villa Park's to lose. Expect another 1 vs. 2 in the final, with La Habra having too much for Villa Park.
NORTHWEST
Area team:
Cantwell of Sacred Heart
Projected Final Four: Lompoc, Nordhoff, Cabrillo/Lompoc and St. Bernard.
Finals: Lompoc over St. Bernard.
Steve's take: I believe Cantwell has the talent to compete in this division. But I need to see the Cardinals develop a bit more consistency and that's been their biggest problem this season, so I have them going out against El Segundo. The rest of the tournament should see the seeds go true to form with Lompoc beating St.Bernard in the final.

CIF-SS Playoffs: Santa Fe-Muir two-minute drill

Here is a look at the Southeast Division first-round playoff game between Muir and Santa Fe, scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. at Pioneer High School. It's our game of the week:

Cantwell update: No suspensions for Cardinals, who open CIF-SS playoffs at El Segundo

| | Comments (3) |

Cantwell Sacred Heart High School will be at full strength when it opens the CIF-Southern Section playoffs at El Segundo on Friday at 7 p.m. for a Northwest Division game.
There had been speculation following a postgame fight with La Salle last week that some of the Cardinals might be suspended this week.
Cantwell coach Kim Taylor shot down those rumors Wednesday.
"No suspensions," he said. "The incident has died down for both schools. It was something that happened. It's disappointing, but we're trying to move on."
The Cardinals (7-3) hope to move on in the playoffs, and Taylor likes their chances when they square off against the Eagles, who are 6-4 and shared the Pioneer League title with Torrance.
"They are a very good football team," Taylor said. "But I like our chances. It's a good matchup for us.
"We're playing good football and making plays. I like our draw and I think we have a good shot."
Cantwell is led by running back/receiver Corey Collins, who has accounted for 1,718 yards and 22 touchdowns.
The winner advances to face either
No. 3 Cabrillo of Lompoc or Oak Park in the second round.

CIF-SS Girls Volleyball playoffs: Whittier Christian-Downey 2A final to be played Saturday at 10 a.m.

| | Comments (0) |

CIF-SS just released the girls volleyball championship schedule for the weekend, and Whittier Christian will face Downey in a matchup of the top two seeds in Division 2A will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Cypress College in Gym 2.

Heralds rise above; advance to Division 2A girls volleyball finals

| | Comments (0) |

Whittier Christian High School, after graduating the core of a team that advanced to the girls volleyball divisional semifinals last season, had no big expectations this fall.
But funny things happen when you least expect it, and that certainly proved to be true for the Heralds.
Sophomore outside hitter Deanna Blaine had 16 kills and senior opposite Jaclyn Barrera had eight and the host Whittier Christian made up for last season's disappointment with a 20-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-18 victory over Oxnard Tuesday night in a CIF-Southern Section
Division 2A semifinal.
Whittier Christian, also getting a solid passing effort from senior setter Jaden Louie, improved to 24-2 and will face either Downey or Palm Desert in the championship game either Friday or Saturday at Cypress College. CIF-SS will set the day and time on Wednesday.
The Yellowjackets, getting a 19 kills from Alysha Rivera, finished 18-18.
Whittier Christian coach Shawn Hunter: "As much as I can, I try to teach these girls to just compete. The scoreboard can play games with your head a little bit. If we compete and not worry about the score, good things can happen."
Senior Jaden Louie: "We're so excited. At the beginning of the year, because we lost so many players, we didn't think we could get this far. But we actually went further than we thought we could, so we're pretty excited about that."

CIF State office denies La Habra QB Clark Livingston's appeal

| | Comments (0) |

La Habra quarterback Clark Livingston's appeal to the CIF State office was denied Monday.
The senior, who transferred from Orange Lutheran to La Habra in early August, was ruled him ineligible by the CIF-Southern Section, citing that he did not meet the minimum requirements for athletic participation.
Livingston filed an appeal to the state office and was granted an appeal hearing, which was heard on Oct. 25. The state office, by rule, had 15 business days to make a decision, which came Monday.

Last Week: It was a decent week, with missing on Whittier over El Rancho, Village Christian over Whittier Christian and Cal over La Serna.
This week: It's playoff time and we have some good matchups, highlighted by Santa Fe vs. Muir and Mayfair vs. La Serna in the Southeast. I like Santa Fe and Mayfair, but both games should be close.

CIF-SS Selection Sunday: La Habra, Santa Fe, La Mirada earn seeds; St. Paul, Whittier snubbed

| | Comments (25) |

Here are the area pairings for the CIF-Southern Section playoffs, which were released Sunday morning. The biggest surprise was La Mirada, being bumped from its No. 10 ranking last week to the No. 4 seed in the Southeast Division. The Matadores (6-4), who have won five consecutive games, will host Crescenta Valley, the No. 4 team from Pacific League. La Mirada could face Arcadia, which was ranked No. 3 in the division but is unseeded, in the quarterfinals. I'm a little surprised by Santa Fe getting the No. 2 seed, but not surprising to see the Chiefs get bumped up. But Santa Fe gets the unfavorable matchup against Muir, which upset La Mirada in the bracket last season. California will be at home against Pasadena and La Serna will travel to face Mayfair.
The rest of the brackets went as expected with La Habra taking the No. 2 seed in the Southwest, Whittier Christian getting a home game in the Mid-Valley and Cantwell taking to the road in the Northwest.
I was a little disappointed with St. Paul not receiving an at-large bid. I understand CIF-SS' procedure in choosing at-large teams and looking to qualified third-place teams first, but I think at the end of the day, St. Paul, which has been ranked in the top 10 all season and three weeks at No. 1, is one of the top 10 teams in the division and should be in the playoffs.

Suburban League update: La Mirada wins coin flip, will be league's No. 1 rep

| | Comments (0) |

I just got the word that La Mirada, which earned a share of the Suburban League title following Friday's 49-21 victory over Norwalk, won the coin flip to break the three-way tie with Mayfair and Bellflower and will be the league's No.1 representative when the CIF-Southern Section releases is playoff pairings on Sunday.
Mayfair, by virtue of its 26-5 victory over Bellflower, is No. 2 with the Buccaneers third.
La Mirada, which started 0-3, has won five consecutive games to finish 6-4. The Matadores have outscored those five opponents, 250-62, including routing Mayfair, 44-14, two weeks ago.

Friday Gameday Recap: Cal steps up, beats La Serna to secure playoff spot; St. Paul makes its case and La Mirada gets a share of Suburban title

| | Comments (8) |

The regular season is in the books and California will keep playing after winning the "Battle of the Boulevards" with rival La Serna to secure a spot in the CIF-SS party, better known as the divisional playoffs...St. Paul, which will probably be on the outside looking in on Sunday, stated a case for playoff consideration by rallying to beat Harvard-Westlake. La Mirada also enjoyed a big win, beating Norwalk to secure a tri-Suburban League title with Mayfair and Bellflower. Also, Whittier Christian threw away a shot at a top four seed in the Mid-Valley Division with a loss to Village Christian.
Here's a brief look at Friday's games:
No. 2 St. Paul 41, Harvard-Westlake 28 -- Mairjon Ancich may have coached his last game, but if so, he went out a winner. Now the question is do the Swordsmen, who got 347 yards from Paul Telles, receive an at-large entry to the Western Division playoffs. CIF-SS tradition says no. But I guess we find out Sunday.
No. 4 La Mirada 49, Norwalk 21 -- The Mats, getting 90 yards and two TDs from Johnny Hills, are a team nobody wants to play in the playoffs after enjoying another dominating win.
Village Chr. 25, No. 5 Whittier Chr. 14 -- This one could have playoff implications. The Heralds, if you listen to some, could have earned a top four seed for the playoffs, which is now gone. But I still like this team to make a deep playoff run, no matter what my Trib co-horts think.
California 14, La Serna 13 -- The playoffs won't be a California dream, which earned a spot when Michael Davis broke free and blocked a game-tying conversion kick to preserve the victory with 45 seconds left. The win puts Cal as the No. 2 team from the Del Rio, dropping La Serna to No. 3, and Whittier out. The Cardinals can still get an at-large spot.
Cantwell 29, La Salle 12 -- The Cardinals finished the regular season with a win. But this one ended ugly after the game with a brawl that resulted in police officers intervenes.

Thursday Gameday Recap: La Habra turns it on; Schurr falls short and Whittier stays in the hunt with win

| | Comments (2) |

Who said you can't turn it off and on? La Habra certainly said otherwise, rallying back from a 14-point deficit in the second with 38 unanswered points to wrap up the Freeway League title with a 48-24 victory over Troy. The comeback of the area's top team was the highlight of an exciting Thursday, which also saw Schurr come up empty in a lost to San Gabriel that could have earned the Spartans a piece of Almont League title, and Whittier staying alive for a playoff bid with a victory over El Rancho. The Cardinals, who finished the regular season 5-5 and 2-3 in the Del Rio League, now must await Friday's "Battle of the Boulevards" tilt between rivals Cal and La Serna. Cal must win to take second in the league, with a loss giving Whittier the final playoff slot from the league.
Here's brief look at Thursday' five area games:
No. 1 La Habra 48, Troy 24 -- The Highlanders looked in trouble early in the third after the Warriors turned a fumble into a 24-10 lead. I should have known better. In a matter of moments, following two Aaron Porter TDs, it was tied at 24 before three more TDs - one on a 51-yard pass by Sean Sparling and two on scoring runs by Brett Bartolone, made it a cakewalk for the Highlanders.
No. 3 Santa Fe 42, Pioneer 3 -- Joey Davis rushed 101 yards and the Chiefs (6-4, 5-0) locked up the Del Rio League title. Maybe I will be proven wrong, but the way Davis is running and the way the Chiefs are stepping up defensively, I say this team makes it to the Southeast final against West Covina.
San Gabriel 21, Schurr 10 -- The Spartans, getting 196 yards rushing from Eric Magos, kept it close, but still came up short in game they needed to earn a playoff spot. Andy Guerrero rushed for 129 yards for San Gabriel.
Whittier 34, El Rancho 13 -- The Cardinals, who started 3-0, dropped four consecutive games, are now in position to gain a playoff spot. Don't be surprised if you see some Whittier players show up for tonight's Cal-La Serna game. The Cardinals qualify for the playoffs with a La Serna win.
Montebello 39, Keppel 0 -- The Oilers ended the season on a positive note with an easy win over the Aztecs, who haven't won a league game since 1999.

WDN Elite 13: La Habra, eying another Freeway League title, stays at the top

| | Comments (8) |

1. (1) La Habra (6-3) -- The Highlanders go for another Freeway League title when they host Troy on Thursday, which could be the first step toward another CIF-SS title.
2. (2) St. Paul (6-3) -- The Swordsmen still have the look of the area's second-best team, but the rigors of the Mission League is taking it's toll. They are still alive for a playoff berth, but its pretty slim.
3. (3) Santa Fe (5-4) -- The Chiefs, after wrapping up the Del Rio League, will be a force in the Southeast Division.
4. (4) La Mirada (5-4) -- Don't count out the Mats in the Southeast after obliterating Mayfair, 44-14.
5. (5) Whittier Christian (6-3) -- The Heralds wrapped up another Olympic League crown, now look to get back to the Mid-Valley finals.
Others: 6. La Serna (7-2); 7. Cantwell (6-3); 8. Cal (6-3), 9. El
Rancho (5-4); 10. Schurr (3-6), 11. Montebello (3-6); 12. Whittier
(4-5); 13. Pioneer (1-8).

CIF-SS Girls Volleyball Playoffs: La Serna and St. Paul advance, California, Santa Fe, La Mirada go down

WHITTIER - The way the La Serna High School girls volleyball team figured, the Lancers had visiting La Quinta right where they wanted the Blackhawks. Ahead.
Junior Jaliyan Rutledge had 13 kills and host La Serna rallied in each set to score a 25-18, 25-18, 25-22 victory over La Quinta in a CIF-Southern Section Division 2A first-round match Tuesday.
The Lancers improved to 16-3 and will play at No. 1 seed Downey (23-5), which had a bye, in Thursday's second round at 7 p.m.
La Serna coach Monique Gayton: "(The girls) like to make it interesting. In every time out, or after every game, I talk about getting on the board first. But for some reason, it ends up the other team getting the first point. I don't know what it is. They like to play, like to fight back and come back and win."

WDN Touchdown Table: Your Predictions and ours

This season, I will give my predictions for all the area games from week to week. Want to play? Just add your projections and keep your tally and see how you match up.
Record (season total, last week): Ramirez (65-34, 6-3)
Last Week: Not a very good week as I missed on Cal over El Rancho, Schurr over Montebello and La Mirada routing Mayfair.
This week: Well, the final week of the regular season as arrived, and we have some big games with both league title and playoff implications. Both La Habra and Schurr go for league titles on Thursday. I like to Highlanders to secure the outright Freeway league title over Troy, but I can't see Schurr getting a piece of the Almont League title against San Gabriel, which is coming off a 69-14 win over Alhambra. The Spartans also need to win to have any hope for a playoff spot. On Friday, take La Mirada over Norwalk, which will gain the Mats a piece of the Surburban League crown and La Serna over Cal in the battle for second in the Del Rio League and St. Paul over Harvard-Westlake. The Swordsmen need to win to have any hope for a playoff spot.
Here are this week's predictions:
Thursday, Nov. 10

Troy at La Habra, 7 p.m. - La Habra
Schurr at San Gabriel, 7 p.m. - Schurr
El Rancho vs. Whittier at California HS, 7 p.m.
Santa Fe at Pioneer, 7 p.m. - Santa Fe

CIF-SS Girls Volleyball playoffs: Whittier Christian gets No. 2 seed in 2A; St. Paul, La Mirada and Del Rio League trio get bids

Whittier Christian, which was ranked No. 2 in Division 2A much of the season, received a No. 2 seed when the CIF-Southern Section released playoff pairings for girls volleyball Saturday.
The Heradls, who advanced to the semifinals last season, will have a bye in Tuesday's first round and will face either Burbank or Xavier Prep in Thursday's second round.
St. Paul, La Mirada and the Del Rio League trio of league champ La Serna, along with second-place California and third-place Santa Fe also received bids.
St. Paul, the No. 2 team from the Camino Real League, will host Providence in 4AA. La Serna, which went 10-0 the Del Rio League will host La Quinta on Tuesday with a possible matchup against top seed Downey in the second round.
Other first round matchups on Tuesday are California host Palm Desert and Santa Fe traveling to Warren in 2A and La Mirada, the No. 3 team from the Surburban, traveling to Burroughs of Ridgecrest in 3AA.

Friday Recap: St. Paul rally comes up short; La Mirada is en fuego and La Habra, Santa Fe and Whittier Christian also win

| | Comments (28) |

(Staff photo by Keith Durflinger)

Friday was one of the bigger nights in the season, with La Habra, Whittier Christian, Santa Fe and La Mirada playing for a share of their respective league titles and St. Paul looking to secure a playoff spot. The first three came through. The Swordsmen, despite a fourth-quarter rally, came up short, losing to St. Francis, 28-22. La Serna all but wrapped up a playoff spot by routing Pioneer and Schurr stayed in the hunt for a league title, beating rival Montebello.
Here's a brief look at Friday's games:
No. 1 La Habra 30, Sonora 13 -- It was closer than expected, but the Highlanders, getting 167 yards rushing and three TDs from UCLA commit Aaron Porter, clinched a share of the Freeway League title with the win. They go for the outright title on Thursday against Troy.
St. Francis 28, No. 2 St. Paul 22 -- The Swordsmen's playoff hopes were dealt a major blow when David Cabral was stopped short on a fourth-and-1 from the St. Francis 10 with 50 seconds left. St. Paul, which is 6-3, might argue that it's ranking deserves consideration. But CIF-SS usually doesn't like two at-large teams from the same league, and St. Francis has priority now with the win.
No. 3 Santa Fe 26, Whittier 6 -- The Chiefs, scoring four TDs in the second half, secured at least a piece of the Del Rey League title. The question now is do they deserve to be bumped up to No. 2?
No. 4 La Mirada 44, Mayfair 14 -- All I can say is wow! I didn't see this one coming. I'm surprised by the Mats' win, but by 30 points? La Mirada must be kicking itself for the loss to Bellflower, who they are now tied with, along with Mayfair. But this is looking like a team you don't want to lineup against in the playoffs.
No. 5. Whittier Christian 41, Valley Christian 23 -- The Heralds, getting 319 and two scores from Daniel Chacon, clinched at least a share of their second-consecutive Olympic League title. Whittier Christian is another team you don't want to see in the postseason as the Heralds are beginning to look like they can make another final-round run.
Schurr 13, Montebello 10 -- Don't look now, guess who gets to play for the Almont League title? Yes, it's the Spartans who used another defensive effort to improve to 3-1 in league play. It will take a monster effort next week against 4-0 San Gabriel, who just hung 69 points on Alhambra, but stranger things have happened.
La Serna 60, Pioneer 14 -- The Lancers, getting three TDs from OJ Medina, kept pressure on Santa Fe, while also putting itself in position to claim second in the Del Rio League with an easy win. They face rival California next week and get at least second with a win, which could also take third away from the Condors.
Cantwell 34, Verbum Dei 22 -- Corey Collins scored three TDs as the Cardinals all but locked up a playoff spot with a win.

Thursday Recap: California runs over El Rancho, 24-20

| | Comments (5) |

(Staff photo by Leo Jarzomb)
Thursday's Result
California 24, El Rancho -- Lawrence Gomez rushed for 99 yards and a touchdown and Aaron Garcia had 92 and a score to lead a 290-yard rushing effort as the Condors took a step toward a CIF-Southern Section playoff berth with a 24-20 victory over El Rancho.
California improved to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the Del Rio League. El Rancho, which got 109 yards passing from Joe Sanchez to key two fourth-quarter scoring drives, slipped to 5-4 and 1-3.
The Condors, leading 14-7 at halftime, got an interception by Josh Garcia to set up a 42-yard field goal by Eric Amezquita for a 17-7 lead at 3:37 of the third quarter before Gomez had runs fo 31 and 1 yards to push it to 24-7 with just over 10 minutes to play in the game.
Sanchez cut it to 24-20 with just over five minutes left following a 54-yard TD pass to Johnny Garcia and a 1-yard run.
California then drove 61 yards to run out the clock.
California coach Jim Arnold: "We came out flat during the first half last week and didn't play
football like we can. Tonight they did. Our defense played great. We got a few turnovers and a couple of stops and that was huge for us."
El Rancho coach Rick Zepeda: "It was man-to-man and we got out-slugged a bit. We decided to kick it (after the last score). Our defense was playing with some momentum. But you have to give them credit to drive 80 yards in the last five minutes. We scored too late, and that's what caught us."

WDN Elite 13: La Habra and St. Paul rule the roost, but here come the Chiefs

| | Comments (16) |

Here are this week's football rankings, which include school, previous rank and record:

1. (1) La Habra (5-3) -- The Highlanders are in cruise control in the Freeway League, and there seems to be no stopping this train.
2. (2) St. Paul (6-2) -- Its come down to one week for the Swordsmen, who most likely need to beat St. Francis this week to secure a playoff. In theory they can still get in with a loss. But I doubt the Mission League gets two wild-card entries.
3. (6) Santa Fe (4-4) -- Here come the Chiefs, who after starting 1-4 due to a monster schedule, are back where they started the season - No. 3 in the area. The Del Rio League is theirs, and expect a deep run in the playoffs. A final-round appearance is not so far-fetched.
4. (4) La Mirada (4-4) -- The Mats have also recovered from a slow start, beginning the year 0-3. But don't be surprised if they beat rival Mayfair this week and take a share of the Suburban.
5. (5) Whittier Christian (5-3) -- The Heralds go for first place in the Olympic League. But I don't expect them to stop there. This is team you can expect to make some noise in the Mid-Valley Division.
Others: 6. (3) La Serna (6-2); 7. (8) El Rancho (5-3); 8. (9) Cantwell (5-3); 9. (7) California (5-3); 10. (10) Montebello (3-5); 11. (11) Schurr (2-6); 12. (12) Whittier 4-4;
13. (13) Pioneer (1-7).

No ruling yet on La Habra's Livingston

| | Comments (2) |

Clark Livingston, the quarterback who transferred from Orange Lutheran to La Habra, has yet to hear from the CIF State office on his appeal, which was heard by state officials at the CIF-Southern Section office in Los Alamitos last week.
CIF State media relations officer Rebecca Brutlag said Tuesday that no decision has been made on the appeal and cited, per state rules, that a decision would be determined within 15 business days after the appeal hearing, which was held on Oct. 25. The deadline would be Nov. 15, which is the Tuesday before the first round of the CIF-SS playoffs.
Livingston transferred in the middle of August and was ruled ineligible by the Southern Section office later in the month, with the CIF-SS citing he did not meet the minimum requirements for athletic participation.

WDN Touchdown Table: Your Predictions and ours

| | Comments (5) |

This season, I will give my predictions for all the area games from week to week. Want to play? Just add your projections and keep your tally and see how you match up.
Record (season total, last week): Ramirez (59-31, 7-1)
Last Week: It was a pretty good week. I only missed on Whittier beating California. But who got that one?
This week: It's a big week for area teams, with three big matchups, two which could determine league champions and one with playoff implications. Locals La Mirada and Whittier Christian are playing for first place in their respective leagues. La Mirada can get a piece of first place and set up a possible three-way tie in the Suburban League when it takes on Mayfair at Bellflower High. But expect Mayfair to force the Mats to settle for third, winning a close one. Whittier Christian, meanwhile, goes for first in the Olympic League against Valley Christian at Whittier College. Both are undefeated in league, but only the Heralds will be sometime at 10 p.m. on Friday. Go with Whittier Christian. Over at St. Paul, the Swordsmen are in a must-win situation against St. Francis, with the winner wrapping up third place in the Mission League, and the final playoff spot. This one will be close, but St. Francis appears to have the edge. Go with the Knights.
Here are this week's predictions:
Thursday's Game

El Rancho at California, 7 p.m. - El Rancho
Friday, Nov. 4
St. Francis at St. Paul, 7:30 p.m. - St. Francis
La Mirada vs. Mayfair at Bellflower, 7 p.m. - Mayfair
Valley Christian vs. Whittier Christian at Whittier College, 7 p.m. - Whittier Chr.
Sonora at La Habra, 7 p.m. - La Habra
Schurr at Montebello, 7 p.m. - Montebello
Verbum Dei at Cantwell-Sacred Heart, 7 p.m. - Cantwell
La Serna vs. Pioneer at California HS, 7 p.m. - La Serna
