No word yet on site for Friday's Southeast championship game between La Serna and West Covina
Officials at La Serna and West Covina high schools, whose football teams meet Friday to decide the CIF-Southern Section Southeast Division, are still discussing where to play the game.
We are hearing that La Serna, which is the host school, is leaning toward moving the game to Fullerton High School.
La Mirada High School, which in the past has been a venue for the CIF-SS soccer championships, is also a possibility. We will have more when a decision and announcement is made.

Here is a link to a you tube video of last years Southeast championship game done by Tom Kiss, it's an electric atmosphere in the video and several pan shots of the crowd on both sides of the stadium. Walnuts stadium visitor side is about the size of La Mirada's visitor stands and you can see how packed the stands were. At the end of the game when George Johnson scores the winning touchdown there is a nice pan shot all the way across the visitor stands as the crowd is going crazy. It gives you an idea of how packed these title games get.
I assume there will be a district or city safety official to inspect the integrity of these temporary stands to ensure that they can hold the weight of a crowd when fully packed, am I right?
Anyway's here is the link, just highlight it and copy and paste it to your search bar and hit the search button. Sorry for the big link, Wish I knew how to put a direct link so that you could just click on it from this post.

The Trib is reporting the site will be Cal-Hi, to bad La Serna's brain trust had to be so petty.
Steely Don,
It was really more of a tongue n' cheek comment. I may sometimes get carried away with the smack talk here on these blogs. But the West Covina fanbase is a very classy bunch and we travel in numbers and we are a family in the bleachers every Friday night. I suspect the majority of us will just deal with whatever the seating arrangements are and do what we always do. Represent our community with class and style.
@ Bulldogs have bite: A GREAT IDEA! Get there early and PACK that home side with rabid West Co fans. It's a free country, and as you say, you paid for our tickets. If they give you any flak, just say that at the higher division title games (at Angels Stadium) they mix the crowds, so there can be no claiming of exclusive sides here.
This will show the Lancers how appreciative you are of their stadium choice. As they say, what goes around comes around and it's coming full circle Friday night.
Dan,
If it does turn out to be at Cal Hi. Maybe we should all show up early and sit on the home side and make them sit in their rinky dink temp bleachers lol! They can't make us sit on the visitor side, we all paid our eight bucks and there is no seat number on the tickets so it is unenforcable.
Bulldogs have bite,
That's unfortunate, maybe a huge contingent of the West Co overflow crowd can sit on the La Serna side and take up a big section in the middle over there, sounds like it's going to be one big can of sardines at Cal Hi this Friday.
Dan,
My source is definately somebody in the know of the situation. You will see the Varsity team practicing today on the grass field today and not in the stadium. That will be all you need to see to know this is true.
I hope thats not true about the game being played at Cal Hi, even if they bulk up the capacity to 3000 seats, what are you going to do with the other 2 or 3 thousand people? That would mean having to get there a couple of hours early just to not have to stand at the game. Even Fullerton highschool would not be big enough.
Walnut stadium is bigger than Cal Hi and probably a little bigger than Fullerton high school, the stands go from just inside the ten yardline to just inside the ten yardline and 15 rows up. Plus there is a dirt area above the stands all the way across the length of the field. Last years Southeast finals had four or five deep standing in the dirt area above the stands, I remember because I gave up my seat for a neighbor of mine and stood up there for the whole game. I hope they get Cerritos college if Cal state Fullerton is not availiable, or at the least La Mirada highschool, La Mirada at least looks similar in size to Walnut and has a standing area above the visitor stands that goes all the way across the stadium.
It's unfortunate but, the truth is, the district wants the $$$$$ from the draw. They're not about to let those dollars get away and it's a sign of the economic times.
Remember teachers and administrators, "it's all about the kids" right? Yea, sure it is. The kids deserve a big venue.
@ Bulldogs have bite: if your sources are correct and Cal High is the venue, we could have a serious, possibly unsafe, overcrowding situation on Friday. Nobody will have to worry about getting knived in Pico Rivera; they can instead possibly get crushed by collapsing temporary bleachers!
Also, the Lancer coaching staff should be assessed TEN unsportsmanlike penalties for this unconscionable effront to the fans of this area. The Bulldogs should be allowed to use the 150 yards at the time of their choosing during the game.
El Rancho stadium as the venue is a delusional dream. Now that ER sucks they want a piece of the pie since they will never win again, hahaha. When was ERs last CIF title 1966? That Porta Pod you call a stadium could not accommodate a CIF final. ER will try and keep the snack bar revenue to fundraise for their pathetic lil school. This game needs to be played at Fullerton, La Mirada or CSUF maybe ELAC would do.
Realistically speaking, El Rancho High School has the best stadium in the league and could easily accommodate both teams and has a good amount of standing room if needed. Crime has never been an issue during or after football games.. The Jose Ramos murder Is the same as one of la sernas football players being attacked at his house with a baseball bat by some cal football players, both have no effect on the safety of fans during or after a football game. Get in contact with Rick Zepeda or the administrator and make it happen. Freeway access to ER is great and has plenty of parking.. I urge both schools to push for ERHS if a natural good condition field is needed...
My inside sources has just informed me that La Serna is going to host this game at Cal Hi. They are going to add in a set of bleachers that will increase visitor seating to only about 3000 guests. I hope my source is wrong but it is a pretty reliable one, so I feel this is the real situation. It is what it is, Beltran insisted on playing on a grass field. So we will play where ever they want. They are hosting this on the cheap, just like I said they would.
Lancer,
Call me all the names you want because just like your Lancers, they are useless and uneffective.
@ Bulldogs have bite
The real classless ass in this situation is YOU. You do not even know where the game will be held yet you assume it will be the wrong decision, that your fans will not get a seat, that the La Serna Administration is inept or worse making a bad decision simply to gain an imagined advantage and that you with all of your experience in school administration experience could make a much better decision. Oh let's not forget how the Bulldogs Coaches are going to punish the poor Lancers for the unfortunate decisions of the administration by beating them by 60 points. Again why don't you wait until they actually screw up before you start your crying. You can't influence the decision and all the tears are making your make up run... jus sayin...
@Steely Don
In your analogy, the trash dump at this little wedding would be El Rancho High. Pico Riveria has had 5 drive by shootings in that area in the last 2 years including the murder of a former ERHS player. I believe that the issue that rules out The Ranch for a CIF Final is not field or bleacher size but the safety of the players and fans just getting to and from the game. It is obvious that the only interest that you have in holding the game at El Rancho is your own and your on here with all your drama trying to sell it. Do you own a taco stand on Whittier Blvd or is it the contract to clean the stands after the game. Sorry Buddy but your wallet is showing and NOBODY is renting your DUMP.
All of you have great arguments about where the game should be played!!!! I know this much if both sides don't agree on a venue CIF will step in!!!!! IMO I don't think you guys will like that!!!
Why don't they host it at El Rancho? It's the best stadium in the League and possibly the Area.
Confirmed: Game will be at California High School Friday night
There was a strong push by the school to have the game at Cal State Fullerton but it is in use that night.
It would be best for CIF to make it MANDATORY that a Championship Game be played at a stadium with a minimum of 10,000 seats. This would eliminate all the back-and-forth discussion of individual preferences and wondering if a school has ulterior motives for this or that venue.
The way I arrived at this seating requirement is to observe that there will obviously be a full complement of fans who followed each team during the current season, but there will also be proud and interested alumni from each school. On top of this, there will be a good amount of fans from the various teams within the division who will want to attend the game. After all, this is the contest they all aspired to play in.
All told, it is very reasonable to expect upwards of 10,000 people at these championships, and any stadium with less seating capacity could not, by CIF edict, serve as the venue. It's time to cut to the chase here and state the obvious: this is a big-time game, and there's no room for screwing around.
La Serna is a novice at this stadium usage thing, and this is exactly why a CIF rule would help tremendously to prod them along in doing things properly.
Online fan,
Last year's championship was Bonita's Home game. They did their best to find a good venue as the two local colleges were booked. Yes it was overcrowded last year. Which only stresses my point of playing this game anywhere that will accommodate everyone. We should all agree that Cal hi is just not big enough. WC does not care if it's turf or grass, just we don't want another situation like last years overcrowded mess which was beyond the control of WC's administration. Winning the flip for the Home game in the championship brings the responsibility of hosting it responsibly. You would be upset if your team was the road team in the final and you and your fans had no place to view the game!
Lancer,
There is a difference between what I said and you insinuating that someone is a drunken prostitute. if you cannot see that difference, then my classless assumption holds true. There is a reason why CIF allows the road team to challenge the location in the championship round. It is because they understand that some schools don't have the stadium to host it. Even WC would move the game if it was their Home game.
Here's some basic information: El Rancho High School's visitor bleachers hold more people than Fullerton High's visitor side. The Ranch also has a grass field, and it's less than 6 miles from La Serna. But according to Lancer officials, FULLERTON HIGH is the closest suitable stadium. How strange.
As for this guy who says we're wasting time talking about the venue, I'm assuming he would be OK with hosting a wedding in a trash dump, since the silly "comfort" of the guests doesn't matter. What a great friend of High School Football, huh?
@ Bulldogs have bite
It was you that was classlessly dropping words like desperate, disgusting, classless, irresponsible, cheap, about another teams administration (lead by a national Principal of the Year may I add) and yet you admit you have no idea where the game will be held let alone what kind of field it will be on. You are all alligator mouth and hummingbird ass drama queen. Just wait till you know what to cry about before you hurt yourself flailing your arms and stomping your feet.
@ bulldogs have bite, you talk like your administration is so great and handles every situation perfect! Obviously not after last years championship game against Bonita! It was way overcrowded, and yes I've been too many championship games and the only ones complaining about the field, seating, etc are losing ones! I'm not in anyway saying were gonna win, I'm just saying wherever it is played no one is gonna care after the game is over! If you do, then you have real issues.. I can see Lancer getting frustrated with you because at the sametime (whether you see it or not) you're bashing the la serna program and I don't think the west co program is very happy with you complaining and whining the past two days! And with Rebledo talking about la serna wanting to play at Fullerton because of the grass, who the heck cares what some midget says that probably never even played football in his life! Plus he's a west co homer, if it was up to la serna they would play at cal hi! And guess what that's grass! No one is making excuses let's go out there and play the game! And come Friday night may the best team that night win! Oh and don't forget your seat cushion, starbucks and west co snuggie.. I wouldn't want you to be at all uncomfortable, maybe the press box suits you better! Lol see you Friday haha
People need to stop whining about the venue or why teams want it at a particular place. La Serna wants to play on grass and West Covina wants to play on turf. No problem with teams having preferences.
I think the one thing everyone can agree on is that the game shouldnt be at Cal. That venue is not made to hold a title game. Fullerton is a decent choice but I believe it should be held at La Mirada or Cal State Fullerton.
At the end of the day, it's La Serna's choice. That's the reward for winning the flip for the home team designation. Let's just hope it's not at Cal
Lancer,
The fact is we still don't know where the game is being played and it's all on the La Serna officials to choose a suitable venue. It's late Monday evening and we are still waiting. It was Fred Robledo who posted that LS wanted Fullerton HS because of the grass field, not I. In football talk that means a certain team wants to slow down the speed of another. The issue is not football scheming, but fan logistics.
Your classless name calling is all I need to know about the La Serna people, or is it? They must be so proud of you representing them so well on these blogs!
Wherever the game is played the Bulldogs will be ready to defend their Southeast Division title. Grass, snow, mud, asphalt, we don't care! Just make sure there is enough room so everybody can enjoy the experience.
@Bulldogs have Bite
First you manufacture your own reason that you do not have a clue is true for an administration venue selection that you have absolutely no idea is correct and you are going on and on as if you were part of the decision. Now you have worked your self up to such an idiotic level with your little imaginarium that you are sure that whatever decision LS makes it will be to screw you personally. Dude give it a rest until you actually know where the game will be held before you start crying about how hard the benches are and how bad the field is. With all your whining you sound like your old TIA working on Cameron.
Online fan,
Obviously you have not been to a CIF Championship game. Yeah sure the boys would play in the parking lot if they had to! But you just cannot squeeze 5000 fans in a set of bleachers intended to hold 2500! Would you like to stand an entire game with the possibly of a poor view of the action? On top of that the cost of admission and travel for that same poor view and having to stand, or not allowed in at all by fire marshals? No, right? The joke is that this is even up for discussion, the La Serna Officials have been given a resposibility of hosting the Championship game and they are dropping the ball on it.
This game is huge for both schools and deserves a facility that can handle the magnitude of it's importance.
This is really ridiculous discussing where the game is gonna be played and all I hear on here is everyone crying about this and that! Who cares! It's the CIF championship the boys would play this game on a freekin soccer field! And all everyone is talking about is how comfortable the fans are gonna be! That's a joke! And for steely don, besides Santa fe this is the biggest game for the del rio league in DECADES and DECADES and DECADES! So yeah I guess it is a big deal but the venue is the last thing everyone should be talking about!
Steve,
Hate to break it to you but you posted Whittier High School and not West Covina.
Steely Don,
They want Fullerton because of the real grass surface in an attempt to slow down West Covina's speed. All WC wants is a facility that can accomadate the fans. It shows that these guys at La Serna are desperate for any advantage they can get. It is disgusting the stunt they are trying to attempt. Play us on the moon it don't matter, grass will also make them slower. Our backs run with speed and power, and they have balance. Grass is not going to slow them down.
If La Serna chooses a small venue, the WC crowd will just show up early and take up all the seats on the home side. What a classless move by the La Serna officials. If you cannot handle the resposibilities of hosting a Championship game, then why even have a team? It's a Championship game and they're trying to do it on the CHEAP! LOL!
I know what those overweight classless La Serna coaches are trying to do.. They want to play at Fullerton High school because they have grass, they think the grass, or should I say dirt will slow West Co down.. What a joke, the game should be played at Cerritos College or La Mirada High school period... La Serna is a joke!!!!!
FULLERTON High School? Was Barstow High not available?
I can think of only ONE reason a WHITTIER school would want to play their 'home' game at an orange county High School: that very old high school (Fullerton) has an enormous home side and a disproportionately SMALL visitor's side. What a shameful attempt to stack the deck in your favor, dear Lancers.
Everyone was in your corner for making it this far, and now you have to try this stunt with the venue...just disgusting.
