WDN Post Mortem: Who's No. 1?

| | Comments (21) |

Well, the 2011 area high school football season is a wrap. As we get knee deep in selecting our all-area team, I began wondering what the top five should look like.
Here's what the MaxPreps computer rankings says, with the actual MaxPreps CIF-SS rankings in parentheses:

1. La Habra (53)
2. St. Paul (70)
3. La Serna (93)
4. La Mirada (94)
5. Santa Fe (145)

I unfortunately was the one who suggested El Rancho stadium;

It was just a thought because the overhead for this arena is traditionally very low.

The LA Sheriff Football team just played their Turkey Bowl there, again this year, LA Fire FB team plus LAPD football team use it and they only pay for a janitor and at times for the lights, (it could be that those teams have a strong ER Alumni Pool playing for them, more juice with the administration,?,) there are other outside squads, enterprises who at times use the stadium nevertheless not sure on their cost.

The stadium has the most seating in the area. El Rancho has a number of those portable aluminum stands for the endzone.

“Like I say, regrettably I recommend it”, nonetheless assumed everyone was giving their food-for-thought on an adequate stadium, my bad…..

I don’t and didn’t care where the game was going to be played. My friends and I attended the game and because we bought the tickets at the high school there was no problem getting in.

ER’s stadium does need a lot of improvements and with the passing of a bond measure two years ago of 64 million to be used on the high school “only” should deal with that. The total reconstruction of our stadium will only require 1.6 million.

However I never thought such a debate would escalate to this magnitude. I live in Whittier, ER alum; and can I say as the famous “RODNEY KING” can we all just get along?

I was hoping for a La Serna win, but there’s next year……. We all want to win next year…….

My top five.
1 La Habra
2 St Paul
3 La Mirada
4 La Serna
5 Santa Fe
I pick La Mirada third over LS because of our heads up Win 31-0, our better win over Mayfair 44-14 vs LS win over Mayfair(47-34) and our better showing(if u can call it that) loss to WC by 29 vs LS loss by 63.
La Serna to 4th over Santa Fe even though SF beat LS.
LS beat Muir

Steely Don,

In the first place, yes you did suggest that the game be played at The Ranch so there goes your credibility. Secondly I was at the game and met my son at the closed gate about mid 2nd quarter. The security guard estimated approximately 500 people had been turned away. I will double that and give you a thousand fans or approximately $9,000 in revenue. Assuming everyone would have made the 12 mile drive to Cerritos College and you pick up the 1,000 people and don't lose any, you still have lost $6,000 on the $15,000 rent of the Cerritos College field. You also lose probably another $4,000 made in the concession stands to the venue so you are at a $10,000 loss. In truth, each of the schools gets $2,000 of that difference and CIF gets $6,000. Perhaps after a Harvard MBA like you can understand why 9 of 13 CIF championships were played at the home field. By the way, many of these stadiums were far smaller than Cal High.

By the way I believe that you have repeatedly and gutlessly ducked questions about your personal motivations and your snide and derogatory comments about all of the more successful programs over the entire year. Until you can man up and deal with these, don't try to come on this blog and try to take the high road. I don't believe that anyone wants to hear your crap at this point.

Did you just figure it out? Based on your comments over the last week regarding the venue and your ass kissing of WestCo, I felt it was appropriate to point out.

See you next year, Steely.

Steely Don said:

For the record, I did not suggest the use of Don Memorial Stadium for La Serna's Championship game; that was another blogger. I only sell tacos.

Also for the record, it is beyond dispute that Cerritos College would have been more than half filled for this event, and if this had not been the venue, then La Mirada's fine stadium would have been a great second choice.

To say that Pac 5 dollars spend differently than Southeast dollars is an odd comment. It's clear that the La Serna people, to whom this title game was an unexpected money grab, eschewed the wishes of the public and went for the easy score. This happened to the detriment of the players and fans.

As a personal note, I'm pleased that Mr. Mojo has latched onto my namesake as a source of bawdry pleasure. I intended it to be understood as an indicator of penetrating insights, but it's fine that he wants it to serve other purposes.

Mojo said:

It's not my group toy, I think they are all a bunch of crooks. I would have liked for them to play at a bigger venue, for the kids. It's all about the CASH. Why can't you understand that?

In case you haven't noticed, Pac-5 football is at a completely different level than the Southeast, in all aspects, especially in attendance. The business model is not the same for Boeing versus a local machine shop toy. One is a major player and the other is not, get it? Servite HAS to rent a stadium, they don't have one. Maybe you can suggest the Ranch.

You lost all creditability to your argument, when you suggested your stadium. How in the hell would that have been a "memorable" experience for the kids?

Steely Don said:

Mojo: Boy, I'm sure glad you spoke up and told us what a hardship it would have been to miss that concession stand money...and the rent for a place like Cerritos College would have really blindsided your group. I had no idea!

Have you been on the Orange County blogs to tell Santa Margarita, San Clemente and the others how BAD, business-wise, it was for them to play at Angel's Stadium? And don't forget Servite: according to your calculus, they're making a major blunder by playing all their home games at Cerritos College.

Now that you've enlightened me, share your business acumen with others. You could even author a book, perhaps titled THINK SMALL: SPEND LITTLE TO MAKE LITTLE.

Mojo said:

They very well may have been turned away but, "thousands". Even if it were "thousands", CIF & both schools would have made much less, if it were played at a rented venue.

Like I said earlier, it's all about the cash, not the kids. They want their money and they were not about to let that stash get away. Toy, are you figuring it out yet?

Matodore Fan said:

@Mojo
My kids went to the game and were turned away, because they were told it was sold out.

Mojo said:

Would the revenue of these "thousands" that didn't go, offset the cost for renting the stadium and the lost revenue at the concession stand? Are you in business for yourself toy? I doubt it. Did you pay attention in class? I doubt that also. Stick to the taco cart.

Steely Don said:

@ TC: Was it "smart" to piss-off thousands of people who couldn't gain entry into the stadium on Friday? Was it "smart" to not make the extra money in ticket revenue from these people?

I may only be bloggin' from the hood here, but from my vantage point I see a person who is only concerned that his own precious carcass got seated, and screw everyone else. Nice to know there are such caring people out there.

TC said:

I believe the La Serna coaches, administration and CIF leaders made the right decision in allowing the La Serna/West Covina game to be played at Cal High. Even some of the West Covina fans are now admitting that it was an electric atmosphere. Of course, when your team scores 84 points, it's generally going to be electric. But, in retrospect, the intimate atmosphere does allow for more energy and enthusiasm because the fans are closer to the game. This is what makes high school football so enjoyable. To play the game in a packed, standing room only stadium generates a stronger connection to the game than in a large, half-empty stadium. A number of years back, CIF allowed the
overflow crowd to stand on the field; some on the sidelines and some behind the end zones. I would vote for that again. It’s the best way to watch a game.

I call the decision-makers smart which is why they are in the elevated positions they are in and why some of the others are just bloggin' (from the stadium in Pico Rivera). LOL!

I'll give you some inside information: the real reason we don't have an NFL team in Los Angeles after all these years is that Roger Goodell can't find the architectural plans for Cal High's Stadium.

League officials have scoured the country looking for the most innovative, comfortable and downright glamorous design, and the Hawes Street facility keeps coming up in every discussion.

Naturally, the corrugated sheet metal boxes would have to be enlarged somewhat to hold the larger NFL audiences, but as long as the clever rectangular design remains unaltered, this type stadium would have the NFL back in town TOMORROW.

Shamefully, I have to confess that this is the reason I have disparaged the Condors' playing facility: I am green with envy that El Rancho can't have something like this.

Listen toy, (you do know what your name means, right?)are you telling us that piece of crap stadium you use, is better than Cal's? You tried to sell your dump initially and when no one took you up on it, you started talking s#@t on Cal. Get back to talking about your beloved program already. Oh I'm sorry, not much to talk about.

Both St. Paul's and La Habra's stadiums are suitable.

Steely Don said:

Mr. Realist: Do you not take my comment seriously? Sure, Cal High is lacking in some regards, but after seeing La Serna's stout effort against the Bulldogs on Friday, the place has come to symbolize, at least for me, a real warrior's arena.

I say that you should capitalize on this emotion while it's still fresh in the public's mind. What do you think? Your opinion is crucial to me.

Anonymous - I believe the soccer previews are scheduled to come out this week.

@ steely don, once again you prove my point! All your posts are nothing but hot air, no football knowledge just complaining like a little girl! If there was a job for whinning man you would be a billionaire! Give it up already! Or should I say get in the "finding a venue business" that's your calling! As far away from football as possible, cause all that seems to intrigue you much more! Because when it comes to football you have nothing to say, just blah blah blah cal hi is the worst football field ever! Please if you have nothing knowledgable to say about FOOTBALL don't post anything again, you repeat the samething over and over and it just drives people away from discussion of the topic at hand, FOOTBALL!

Steely Don said:

Yes, St. Paul will indeed play La Habra next season, but only if they can secure a suitable venue, like Cal High.

We will finally see said:

St Paul vs La Habra week two in 2012.......
