GIRLS SOCCER
Del Rio League
California 3, Pioneer 0
The Condors sent an early message to the rest of the Del Rio League as California (4-8-2, 1-0) easily handled the Titans (9-4-0, 0-1), who were ranked No. 8 in the latest CIF-SS Division
5 poll.
"We opened league on a positive note and especially to knock off the eighth-ranked team in our division made it that much better," said California coach Brian Bordier.
California got goals from senior forward Brianna Ramirez, sophomore midfielder Lizzie Ayson and senior midfielder Bella Aguilar.
Also playing an outstanding game was goalie Briann Banda.
California scored its first goal in the fifth minute when Ramirez scored unassisted as she chipped the ball over Pioneer goalie Alex Robles from about 18 yards out.
Fifteen minutes later, sophomore midfielder Ayson scored her unassisted goal on a direct kick from about 25 yards out to give the Condors a 2-0 lead.
Aguilar scored the final goal on an assist by Liz Ortiz in the 35th minute.

I know several boys who will be scarred for life if they can't get Ramirez out to cover their golf games. See, Steve is their lifelong idol. Their mental equilibrium hinges upon the man's writing.
As for myself, I need the Ramirez touch at my next billiards binge. Just having him there, with the hope that he'll utter an approving word or two, would mean so much.
Life just isn't worth a damn without a write up in the Whittier Daily.
there was not a boys soccer preview either..
Steve,
Any chance girls soccer will be getting more coverage? I know you have a lot to deal with in the area, but just wondering since there wasn't a girls soccer preview this year
HS basketball fan: Yes, I will be covering the La Serna at Cal game and we are planning on sending a photographer as well. It will be a doubleheader for me, since I will also be covering the Pioneer at El Rancho soccer game. Freelancer Red Williams will be at the Whittier at Santa Fe girls basketball game, so we will have three great game stories in the paper.
hs basketball fan,
Steve Ramirez knows the area. He worked for the Whittier Daily News a few years ago before going to Pasadena.
