Gram Parsons release party

gram_image_release.jpg

Gram Parsons Record Release Party tonight. On Thursday, November 8th, Amoeba Music Hollywood will host a record release party for Gram Parsons with the Flying Burrito Brothers Live at the Avalon Ballroom 1969. The festivities begin at 7pm and include live performances by The Mike Stinson Band, Quincy Coleman, Dave Gleason, Amoeba's own recording artist, Brandi Shearer and other surprise guests including original Flying Burrito Brothers member Chris Ethridge! Artists will perform selections from the new release.

Also in attendance tonight will be acclaimed photographer Andee Nathanson, whose intimate photos adorn the albums liner notes and booklet; Pamela Des Barres, who wrote the album’s liner notes and was at the two shows captured on the discs; and Gram’s daughter Polly Parsons. Fans will have a chance to get a free limited edition poster with purchase of the CD, while supplies last.

Gram Parsons, leading the Flying Burrito Brothers, opened for the Grateful Dead April 4, 5 and 6, 1969 at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The April 4th show has never been heard in any form. The bonus disc is the April 6th show. For years these tapes were rumored to exist and were finally unearthed in the Grateful Dead vault.

The record was the result of years of negotiation between Amoeba's president and Owsley "Bear" Stanley, the Grateful Dead's sound engineer who recorded the live show April 6, 1969. You can sample the quality of the recording by downloading "Long Black Limousine" from here.

Tom Petty XM Radio Show News

“TOM PETTY’S BURIED TREASURE” KICKS OFF NEW SEASON SEPTEMBER 24 ON XM

It was announced today that Tom Petty will be returning for another season of his celebrated XM show, “Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure.” With the first installment premiering Monday, September 24, “Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure” will continue to blend favorite tracks from Petty’s personal collection, forgotten masterworks from the garages and used record bins of the world, and live-in-concert classics recorded by rock and roll’s most inspired practitioners. At the heart of the hour long show will be Tom Petty himself, providing informed, often hilarious, and always passionate commentary on the music that he loves best.

Among the very first artist-presented XM shows, “Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure” has helped to usher in a new wave of inventive radio programming: shows based on the core idea that even the legends of popular music are, at the end of the day, listeners and fans themselves. Petty’s show reveals the simple but striking truth that the best way to understand a musician is to let them spin some records. The intimacy of the format remains the show’s hallmark.

Petty will treat fans to song such as Lee Dorsey’s “Ride Your Pony,” The Searchers’ “He’s Got No Love,” and The Pyramids’ “Penetration,” among others, when the season premiere of “Buried Treasure” airs Monday, September 24 at 10 a.m. ET on XM’s deep classic rock channel, “Deep Tracks” (XM 40). Beginning in October, “Buried Treasure” will move to Thursdays on XM 40.

New for this season, “Tom Petty’s Buried Treasure” will also be available all day every Thursday on “XMX” (XM 2), a recently launched channel that provides fans with XM’s most popular and critically-acclaimed original music shows all in one place. The XMX schedule is built around a ‘program of the day’ format designed to provide more opportunities to tune in anytime and listen to episode premieres or catch up on episodes from previous weeks or seasons.

Sound and Jury at Austin City Limits

rocketboys2.jpg
Homer Hiccolm and the Rocketboys
Well Dell computers has decided to get into the music scene in a big way with their Delllounge and sponsorship of a stage at Austin City Limits Music Festival.

Also, with by sponsoring two new events this year, the Sound and the Jury and Hot Freaks, they have embraced the Indy scene. Dell reps speak of the intersection of life and technology as the place they want to be, and with this promotion of the music scene they seem pretty serious.

The final five bands competing in the Sound and Fury competed last night at the renown Antone's, and the latest experiment in the "democratization of music" produced the first band to win an opening slot at ACL by what amounts to a popularity contest. That being said, this public AR group picked out Homer Hiccolm and the Rocketboys from Abilene, Texas, an alternative band with a great sound.

Will we see more of this sort of thing where grass roots folks and bloggers determine what we listen to?
Would that be a bad thing? It certainly couldn't be any worse than what Corporate Radio is serving up in today's markets. So along with politics, the power might just be coming back to the people. We shall see.

Next up: the first day of ACL.

Van Halen at Staples Center

The almost-original lineup of Van Halen will play Staples Center on Nov. 20. Ticket info will be announced soon.

The 25-date trek begins on Sept. 27 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and wraps Dec. 11 in the Canadian city of Calgary. Along with Staples Center, key stops include Chicago (Oct. 16, 18) and New York City (Nov. 13).

It won't be a reunion of the classic lineup because founding bassist Michael Anthony has been replaced by lead guitarist Eddie Van Halen's 16-year-old son, Wolfgang.

David Lee Roth and Van Halen were supposed to hit the road earlier this year for a reunion tour, but plans fell through when Eddie Van Halen entered rehab in March for alcoholism. Roth, now 52, quit Van Halen in 1985.

Van Halen Reunion

PR-Inside.com has the scoop:

EDDIE VAN HALEN is revelling in his reunion with original VAN HALEN frontman DAVID LEE ROTH, describing their recent rehearsals as "pure magic".
Roth will take to the stage with founding band members Eddie and ALEX VAN HALEN, as well as Eddie's bassist son WOLFGANG, when the group hits the road later this year.
It will be the first time Roth has performed live with Van Halen since 1984 he quit the group in 1985 and was later replaced by SAMMY HAGAR.
But Eddie Van Halen is convinced time has healed old rifts, insisting no-one else can sing the group's classic tracks like original frontman Roth.
He tells MTV, "Playing these timeless hits only works with Dave. After one rehearsal, it was pure magic.
"I am very excited to get back to the core of what made Van Halen."

Common, Etc., Show

Grammy-award winning rapper Common will be among the artists on board to perform at this year's Heineken Red Star Soul concert series.

The event, which kicks off Aug. 15 at Boulevard3 in Los Angeles, will feature various entertainers including Chrisette Michelle, Alicia Keys, Erykah Badu, Raphael Saadiq and Raheem DeVaughn.

In addition to the performers, Heineken Red Star Soul will include appearances from DJs Jazzy Jeff, D-Nice and Cassidy.

The event will also recognize a member of the local music community at each tour stop with the Heineken Independent Achiever award.

The award, which was established in 2006, honors individuals who demonstrate the hustle, integrity and drive necessary to be successful while inspiring others.

Eight Heineken Independent Achiever award recipients will accept their award on-stage during the Heineken Red Star Soul concert in their hometown.

Joe Strummer News

The legacy of punk rock legend Joe Strummer continues to live on and grow louder with the release of Fender’s new Joe Strummer Telecaster guitar.

Designed with the guidance and support of the Strummer estate and featuring distressed “road-worn” treatment, a “Revolution Rock” engraved neckplate and a limited edition art customization kit, the Joe Strummer Telecaster will be available at music product retailers worldwide beginning July 2007.

The Joe Strummer Telecaster is modeled after the ’66 Telecaster Strummer played throughout most of his career. Although the guitar’s appearance changed often, it was a fairly standard ’60s-era Telecaster with all the original parts and specifications.

When Strummer bought it in 1975 for £120, the instrument had a three-color sunburst finish, but he soon had it sprayed with gray primer at a London auto shop, and then later added a coat of black paint. These new “finishes” deteriorated quickly, giving the guitar its distinctive look

Mods & Rockers Film Festival

The American Cinematheque announces the lineup of its 8th annual “Mods & Rockers Film Festival”. The extensive 40-film program opens Friday July 13 and will run for 3 weeks till Wednesday August 1 at the Cinematheque’s two locations - Grauman’s Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood and the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica.

Full details on the dedicated festival website: www.ModsAndRockers.com

The festival – which started in 1999 as a one-off salute to 1960’s pop-culture flicks – has now expanded to become America’s largest annual celebration of rock-related films. Each year the festival presents a mixture of premieres of new films - and screenings of classic rock movies that have not been seen theatrically in many years. Nearly half of the films in this year’s festival are not available on DVD and have never been released on home-video. Many have never been seen on US TV.

The films in the 2007 festival represent a 50-year span from Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock” released in 1957 to the world premiere of the 2007 documentary “Respect Yourself” celebrating the 50th anniversary of Stax Records. The 40 films feature on-screen appearances and/or soundtrack performances by over 160 top musicians. An A-Z (Animals-to-Zappa) of the rock world.

Ari Hest at Largo June 12 and 19

Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Ari Hest is drawing raves for exciting live shows and touching new songs that build on the soft-spoken sensibility he established with his 2004 major label debut, "Someone To Tell."

Most of his current "The Break-In" disc was recorded in Santa Monica with veteran producer Mitchell Froom, whose résumé includes Crowded House, Elvis Costello, Suzanne Vega, Los Lobos, Ron Sexsmith and many others. Ari, who'd been a fan of Froom's work, was curious about what would change in his sound.

"He wanted to get the truth and the honesty out of me and not fluff it up in any way," says Ari, "and not color it in ways that would hinder the message."

A prolific songwriter, Ari -- who appears June 12 and 19 at Largo in Hollywood (don't miss it!) -- writes songs constantly and tours throughout the year, honing the tunes in front of ever-appreciative audiences. During the two years since his major label debut, Ari has produced two DIY recordings -- 2005's Guilty Hearts EP and 2006's The Green Room Sessions -- for which he produced and recorded his performances on every instrument using Apple's GarageBand software. Still, there was plenty of new material ready for "The Break-In."

"By the time we began recording for this album, I had enough songs written that I didn't have to write anything in the studio," Ari says. "We just had to arrange what was already there."

The Largo shows are highly recommended.
