Musekiwa Chingodza to give free performance April 1 at Pomona College

Acclaimed Zimbabwean music recording artist Musekiwa Chingodza will give a free performance at 3 p.m. April 1 at Pomona College’s Bridges Hall of Music, 150 E. 4th St. in Claremont.58976-Musenodanger-thumb-400x457-58975.jpg
According to the news release, Chingodza performs his traditional music in the Shona tradition.
“Our music is both medicine and food, as mbira has the power to heal and to provide for people. Mbira pleases both the living and the dead.” 
Chingodza was a key member of the band Panjea in 1991 and composed the hit song “Ganda” on Panjea’s Zimbabwean album. 
Singer, drummer and dancer Chingodza, who plays nyunga nyunga and mbira dzavadzimu, used to teach mbira at Prince Edward School in Harare and currently plays mbira at ceremonies in Zimbabwe. 
His most recent album with Bud Cohen, “Tomutenda Mambo,” was released in 2011.
