INDIO – Wu-Tang Clan improved on their performance last weekend at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival with more energy and more fans on Sunday.
The Staten Island hip-hop group performed many of the same songs from their classic album “Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)” Sunday but with more excitement and chemistry among the individual members than previously.
The Outdoor Theatre audience was also much larger than nearby Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds on the Coachella main stage, similar to last weekend, and would rap the lyrics to nearly all of the songs with the group.
Method Man could be seen using sweeping hand gestures during hits like “Method Man” and “Wu-Tang: 7th Chamber” while fellow members Raekwon and Ghostface Killah were more animated than usual in performing their verses on songs like “C.R.E.A.M.” and on “Criminology,” a song from Raekwon’s “Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…” album.
Before the set started, it was clear the group were in a good mood and ready to throw a party. Raekwon told they audience they had entered “Wu-chella,” a play on words of Coachella. And during the song Wu-Tang Clan Ain’t Nuthing ta … Wit,” at least a dozen black and yellow beach balls were thrown out to the audience to throw around.
