Smooth soul jazz recording artist John Carey with his wife and label mate Gina Carey will celebrate the releases their new CD's at the Claremont Forum Feb. 21.

The event takes place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

The Forum is at 586 W. First St. in Claremont

John wrote, composed, arranged and produced his album "Smooth Soulful & Funky." His last album "New Beginnings" hit No. 8 on the UK soul charts.

Gina's latest album is "Love Letters," which she wrote, composed, arranged and produced. She hit the No. 1 spot on the UK Soul charts with her last album "Melodic."

John and Gina's latest albums will be released on Feb. 14 and be available for purchase on CD Baby, Amazon, iTunes and Soul Brothers Records in the UK.

Documentary music film featuring Grammy nominated artists to be in area Feb. 16

A documentary film titled "Re: Generation Music Project" will be in local cities for a one-night only release in the Riverside and San Bernardino area on Feb. 16 with encore screenings Feb. 23.

According to the news release, Hyundai Veloster in association with The Grammy's are presenting the movie which crosses genres and generations.

Amir Bar Lev, who made the award-winning documentaries "My Kid Could Paint That" and "The Tillman Story," directed the film.

Among the features are current five-time Grammy-nominated artist Skrillex going into a Los Angeles studio with members of the rock band The Doors to collaborate on a new song "Breakn' A Sweat."

Scott Kirkland of The Crystal Method said in the release: "There is no sound we can't make. There's not a beat we can't create. There's not an artist we can't record ... Now what?"

Added DJ Premier in a statement: "You just put me in a whole different way on how to listen."

The film will be shown at:

LOS ANGELES - Whitney Houston, who reigned as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, has died. She was 48.

Publicist Kristen Foster said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unclear.

At her peak in the 1980s and '90s, Houston the golden girl of the music industry and one of the world's best-selling artists.

Among her hits were "How Will I Know," ''Saving All My Love for You" and "I Will Always Love You." She won multiple Grammys including album and record of the year.

Her success carried her beyond music to movies like "The Bodyguard."

But by the end of her career, drug use took its toll as her record sales plummeted and her voice became raspy and hoarse.

Mötley Crüe headed to Las Vegas for February

Los Angeles' Mötley Crüe, who have held a couple of Mötley Crüe Festivals at the San Manuel Amphitheater, will take part in a hard rock residency during February at The Joint At Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, 4455 Paradise Rd, in Las Vegas.

Drummer Tommy Lee said in a statement: "I don't know about you, but when I think of Mötley Crüe I think of filthy sex, drugs, a REALLY big show and way too much fun... sounds like Las Vegas doesn't it? A match made in heaven!"

All shows start at 9 p.m.

The Murs 3:16 and Guerilla Union-promoted Paid Dues Festival takes place at the National Orange Show Events Center on April 7.

The Paid Dues has announced more acts besides headliners Wu Tang Clan of Staten Island and Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, of Los Angeles.

Besides the previously mentioned Dipset, California's Living Legends featuring Murs, The Grouch, Sunspot Jonz, Luckyiam, Eligh, Aesop, Scarup and Bicasso, are also on the lineup.

Wu-Tang Clan and Odd Future announced for Paid Dues Festival; tickets on sale Friday

Wu-Tang Clan and Odd Future will headline the seventh annual Murs in association with Guerilla Union presented Paid Dues Independent Hip Hop Festival on April 7 at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino.

Guerilla Union pre-sale tickets are currently on sale while tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday.

"I am honored this year to have two of the most impactful hip hop collectives in history headline this year's Paid Dues," said festival founder Murs in a news release. "Wu-Tang entered the game in the early 90's and changed everything. And Odd Future has already made an enormous impression in their own right and just a few years in. To have these two dynamic forces on the same stage on the same night is almost unimaginable but only right that it take place at Paid Dues. This and so much more to be announced in the upcoming weeks has me really looking forward to our seventh year of Paid Dues."

The Cypress Hill Smokeout 2012 event announced more acts this week.

Besides previously announced Cypress Hill and Sublime With Rome, acts Korn, Wiz Khalifa, Cafe Tacuba and Dirty Heads were announced for the March 3 festival and medical marijuana expo at the National Orange Show, 689 S. E St, in San Bernardino.

Tickets go on sale to the general public at 4:20 p.m. Dec. 17.

Q: How long will your set be in Pomona? Will you perform a lot of
songs from the new album?

A: My set in Pomona will hopefully not be short. I try to give the people at least an hour and a half. In terms of the performance I've been doing a mixed set of New material and some of the underground classics that people always ask for.

Q: Do you have any general thoughts on the Occupy Wall Street movement
and what it means in these times?

A: I would like to see the Occupy movement will eventually evolve into an opposition force against the anti democratic forces that have expanded their control over this country. It is in the fetal stages of that, because the voice of the people is the only real system of checks and balances that is not corrupted as of yet. I have visited several Occupy sites on my tour and I see them directly address some of things the federal government has swept under the rug. I hope the people aren't discouraged by a few set backs.

Q: Has it become any harder (or easier) for you to get your music and

message out there as the music styles and music distribution keep
changing and why? Is releasing "The Martyr" free via digital download
a response to these times?

A: I have of course updated the format we promote it is very web based but being that I still move lots of physical product then I can't ignore the traditional means. The Free album had more to do with showing people that in these horrific economic circumstances there is no greater expression of solidarity than to give away some of the music I made for free. I mean one dimension commercial artists are asking full retail price for trash. The revolutionary response, give it to them for free.

Q: Have you ever performed "You Never Know" from Revolutionary Vol. 2 live?

A:. Not really. I can count the number of times I have performed that song with one hand. The first time as a matter of fact was at a hospital for an auditorium full of patients suffering from HIV so it was a surreal and very difficult situation. But I got a standing ovation so I guess I did something right. Besides that though just once at Rocksteady, once at the first show I ever did in LA. And one other time. Like I said... I can count them on one hand.

Q: What was the process like creating "Civil War" with Chuck D,

Brother Ali and Killer Mike? Why did you choose these three artists?

A. The Civil War song came from an idea I had about internal struggle. After all a civil war is a revolution in a sense an internal revolution that has usually exhausted every other means of petitioning its government. I had been coming to the South for a while so when the rift between East Coast and Southern Hip Hop began I was disgusted. I knew they had lyricists and that payola on NY radio had just worsened the gap because local artist felt they were looked over. I knew that fundamentally the independent street rappers from South and I had more in common with me than the commercial hip hop aristocracy. So I worked with them and we built a strong network, one I look forward to expanding on. Hence my verse about the Southern East Coast reality and how it is perpetuated by an industry that would rather see Black and Latino people as a caricature of themselves than who we really are. The shunning of intelligence and self determination in exchange for stereotypes. That was my internal struggle in Hip Hop.

I chose Killer Mike because he had a similar past, heavy in the streets but had a wealth of knowledge. I had gone out to ATL and he treated me like a brother. He has seen people from various factions willing to fight to the death against people that are not their enemy. His verse concerned the inner conflict of people who were conditioned into different cultural backgrounds by colonial powers.

Brother Ali I asked to come and round out the entire project by talking about the inner struggle of Islam in America and the hatred and hypocritical criticism. Ali is a professional and one of the best MC's I've had the pleasure of working with. So once I told him the concept for his part he knocked it out of the park. Chuck D is a mentor, a legend, a pioneer and a personal inspiration. Once it was all done I simply asked him to bless the hook and it rounded the song out perfectly.
