Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews will celebrate Thanksgiving early with a pair of free events. He and his office are serving a free Thanksgiving lunch and dinner for Central Area residents on Monday, Nov. 24 at Ernest McBride Park, 1550 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. The meals will be served 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Then on Tuesday, there will be another dinner at Martin Luther King Jr. Park, 1950 Lemon Ave. from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
The meals will be served to about 350 residents. This is the first time these events are being held and are being staged in lieu of turkey giveaways offered in past year.
Andrews said he came up with the idea as a way to be more inclusive, particularly to the homeless.
"What's a homeless person going to do with a turkey?" Andrews asked. He added that last year, a homeless man who didn't know who Andrews was tried to sell him a turkey he had picked up at the park.
Andrews said that by providing the hot meals, he can be sure it actually goes to those who need it most.
"This way we know they'll get something to eat," Andrews said. "I thought this would be so much better."
Reservations are required because of the limited seating. Reservations can be made by calling Kimberly Dodson 562-570-6816.
