The Art Theatre plays host to a free screening of the A&E documentary "King" narrated by Tom Brokaw, Thursday, March 19 at 6 p.m.

One of the citywide A Season of Nonviolence events, the film explores the myths and realities of the slain civil rights leader.

A Season for Nonviolence is a national 64-day educational, media, and grassroots effort that began Jan. 3 and concludes April 4. Through myriad events the Season is "dedicated to demonstrating that nonviolence is a powerful way to heal, transform, and empower our lives and our communities. Inspired by the 50th and 30th memorial anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., this international event honors their vision for an empowered, nonviolent world," according to its literature.

In 2007, the Long Beach City Council passed a motion to participate annually in A Season for Nonviolence, which is now celebrated by the United Nations and 200 cities in the U.S. and abroad.

Thursday's event is co-sponsored by a laundry list of groups and individual including Second District Council Woman Suja Lowenthal, Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews, the Long Beach branch of the NAACP, Antioch Missionary Church and the Long Beach A Season for Nonviolence committee.

Information on the event is available by calling 562-570-6684. Information on A Season for Nonviolence is availabe on-line at www.agnt.org/snv02.htm.
