Breaking bread is a great way to create a sense of community, and to catch up with all the local gossip. North Long Beach has its monthly Dine Out 90805, which has been a popular gathering of neighbors for the past decade now at area restaurants on the last Monday of each month. Bixby Knolls has its monthly Supper Club on first Mondays.
A Taste of Wrigley is the newest effort on that front. The monthly dine-out debuts Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m. at Buono's Restaurant, 401 Willow Street.
As with the other dinner clubs, the event will rotate to local eateries and allow neighbors to get together and talk about the events of the day.
It takes an unusual alignment of the planets for such an occurrence to take place, but the Wrigley Association, which holds its monthly meetings on the first Monday of the month, unless it is a holiday, is actually holding its regular meeting almost midway through the month.
Because September began on a Tuesday and was followed by Labor Day, this has been the longest month for Wrigleyites. It will actually have been 6 weeks since the group last met when it convenes on Monday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. at Veterans Park, 101 East 28th Street.
Meredith Reynolds from the Office of Sustainability will be the featured speaker and discuss the master plan and how it relates to her office.
There will also be some political housecleaning on the docket. New president Bethel Cope-Vega, who replaces Annie Greenfeld who resigned a week ago, will form an election committee to fill a vacancy on the board of directors. The election committee calls for one member of the general membership. The other two members are selected by the President and the Board of Directors.
Child care and parking are free.
Aileen Colon has been elected as the new president of the Belmont Shore Residents Aswociation, according to results released today.

Students in the Central Area will get a chance to show off free new 'dos when they return to school if they take advantage of a rare opportunity on Sunday, Sept. 6 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.
That is, if they can find one of the flyers the shop distributed throughout the community in recent weeks.
Mr. Baker's Style Center, with sponsorship for Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews' office, is offering the free haircuts to students ages 6 to 16 at the shop at 1030 E. Pacific Coast Highway.
"Students want to start the new school year looking their best," said Councilman Dee Andrews in a prepared statement. "We're happy that our partnership with the Mr. Baker's Style Center offers an excellent opportunity for families to prepare their children for school and assist families who may not be able to afford back-to-school haircuts for their children."
Mike Baker, who has run the 69-year-old business for the past 32 years said so many families and businesses struggling during the downturn on the economy, this seemed a good way to give a little something back to the community.
The shop has been a longtime supporter of Poly High and various youth sports programs in the Central Area as well as local churches.
Baker said he expects to be doing a number of designs in hair, a shop specialty, as well as bald fades and mohawks.

It may seem a little early to be getting into the Halloween spirit. But time's a wasting if you want to get in on the harrowing haps as a volunteer for the Historical Society of Long Beach's 14th Annual Historical Cemetery Tour to be staged Halloween Day, Saturday, October 31.
Kristi Fischer at kristif@hslb.org is taking applications until Thursday, Sept. 10.
The group needs help in everything from ticket sales to tour guides, from set up to tear down and everything in between. So if you want to be one of the truly ghoul kids this Halloween, you can drop Fischer a line or call Letticia Montoya at 562- 424-2220.
A list of volunteer jobs is available on the Historical Society of Long Beach Web site. It should be noted, however, that some of the information, such as the people portrayed and the date and time, are from last year's event. HSLB is working to update its site with this year's info.
