Students in the Central Area will get a chance to show off free new 'dos when they return to school if they take advantage of a rare opportunity on Sunday, Sept. 6 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m.

That is, if they can find one of the flyers the shop distributed throughout the community in recent weeks.

Mr. Baker's Style Center, with sponsorship for Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews' office, is offering the free haircuts to students ages 6 to 16 at the shop at 1030 E. Pacific Coast Highway.

"Students want to start the new school year looking their best," said Councilman Dee Andrews in a prepared statement.  "We're happy that our partnership with the Mr. Baker's Style Center offers an excellent opportunity for families to prepare their children for school and assist families who may not be able to afford back-to-school haircuts for their children."

Mike Baker, who has run the 69-year-old business for the past 32 years said so many families and businesses struggling during the downturn on the economy, this seemed a good way to give a little something back to the community.

The shop has been a longtime supporter of Poly High and various youth sports programs in the Central Area as well as local churches.

Baker said he expects to be doing a number of designs in hair, a shop specialty, as well as bald fades and mohawks.
