Long Beach Health Department officials on Monday announced that H1N1 flu vaccines are available to the general public, but there's still no access to pediatric preservative- free vaccines.

 The vaccine was only available to priority groups. However, due to an increased supply from manufacturers, the general public will have access to the vaccine supply, according to city spokesman Ed Kamlan.

 The Health Department is providing H1N1 flu vaccine to all individuals by appointment, which may be scheduled by calling 562.570.4103 between 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon and between 1 to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Appointments may also be made online by logging onto http://lbdhhs.genbook.com.

Due to a recent vaccine recall, pediatric preservative-free vaccine is not available at this time, Kamlan said.

Pediatric doses of the H1N1 flu vaccine with preservative are available, as is the live virus nasal vaccine for healthy persons ages 2 to 49.

 Vaccine will continue to be provided free of charge due to the availability of federal grant funding to support this effort. The Health Department will continue to provide vaccine while supplies last. accpording to Kamlan.

The Health Department also recommends that everyone practice healthy habits to prevent from getting the flu or transmitting it:

-- Wash hands with soap and water or a hand sanitizer frequently;
-- Avoid close contact with people who are sick;
-- Stay home from work or school if you are sick;
-- Cover mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze;
-- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and;
-- Eat healthy food, drink plenty of water, take vitamins, exercise, get plenty of rest, do not smoke, and avoid alcoholic beverages.
