Car wash staged to save historic church

| | Comments (0) |
Sure, the rain will most likely wash your car.

But spend a little time/cash to help save a historic church.

Supporters of "Car Wash Days at St. Isidores" are putting out the call for kind-hearted souls (with dirty cars) to stop by S. Isiddores Historical Plaza on Saturday (Oct.30) -- and for a repeat stop Nov. 28.

"There is an industrious few at St. Isidores Historical Plaza who will wash and clean your car, inside and out, for just $5," the organizers brag. "If it's an SUV, then it will be $8. All for the sake of rescuing our beloved Plaza."

The historic plaza is at 10961 Katella Ave., in Los Alamitos, and the car washers will be on duty between 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.

"Your car will shine and St. Isidore will beam," supporters promise.

This year only, the California Department of Public Health has also made pneumonia vaccine available for use at the annual flu clinics. While supplies last, we will offer free pneumonia vaccine to people who qualify. The standard recommendation for pneumonia vaccine is one dose after the age of 65. People over 60 who smoke or who have lung, kidney or heart disease should get pneumonia vaccine early with a second shot after the age of 65.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend annual seasonal flu vaccine for all children age 6 months to 18 years. According to the CDC, influenza is one of the leading causes of death in the nation among people in all age groups. The Health Department will have seasonal flu vaccine available for infants over the age of 6 months and others who cannot attend the clinics listed above at its regularly scheduled immunization clinic located at 2525 Grand Avenue. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 562-570-4315.

Influenza viruses are always changing so the formulation of flu vaccine changes annually. This is why flu shots are recommended every year. Vaccine from previous years does not provide protection. Annual flu shots are always formulated with the three strains that scientists predict will be likely to cause flu disease in the coming months. Flu disease is most common in the months of January and February, so getting your vaccine in November or December should still provide protection. The three strains of flu in the 2010 -11 vaccine are A/California (H1N1), A/Perth and B/Brisbane. Note that this year's vaccine includes the H1N1 flu strain which prompted Public Health agencies across the country to hold special clinics. This year's annual flu vaccine includes H1N1, so a separate vaccine is unnecessary.

The Health Department also recommends that all persons practice healthy habits to prevent them from getting or transmitting the flu:

* Avoid close contact with people who are sick,
* Stay home from work or school if you are sick,
* Cover mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze,
* Wash hands with soap and water or a hand sanitizer frequently,
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth, and
* Eat healthy food, drink plenty of water, take vitamins, exercise, get plenty of rest, do not smoke, and avoid alcoholic beverages.

The Health Department's vaccination information Shot Line is updated periodically with flu vaccine information, and may be reached at (562) 570-SHOT (570-7468). For more information about flu disease and prevention please visit our website at www.longbeach.gov/health

Termino Avenue drain update

| | Comments (0) |

The Belmont Heights Community Association provided the following information about the Termino Avenue Drain Project courtesy of Victor Bermudez of the Los Angeles County Department of Power and Water, which is overseeing the project.

"We are progressing rapidly through the PE Right of Way. Storm drain construction should be completed through there by mid November. We will still have the storm drain laterals with catch basins to connect to the new storm drain in the surrounding streets. 6th Street and Quincy Avenue have two laterals and catch basins that still need to be built which should start around the beginning of November and last through the end of the month before all is restored, barring any delays.
Due to time constraints and complications with work still needed at Park Ave at Appian Way, all required improvements are not completed. Park will remain closed until about mid November, hopefully opening sooner than later. Once Park Ave is reopened, the Park Ave end of the PE Right of Way will be used for Todd's Christmas Tree Sales, which is usually staged at 7th and Termino Ave.
At Marine Stadium, the coffer dam will be removed, which will take a couple of weeks along with restoring all the sidewalk and brickwork within the consturction area. The farmers market will move back into the park area while this area is restored taking about a month total to complete.
The Greenbelt area is now underway to start excavating for the open pits on each side to tunnel with double 78-inch storm drain pipe from just south of Termino Ave to the north side of 7th Street. The City of Long Beach has a contract to save as much of the existing vegetation, trees, plants and bushes as possible. Any vegetation that cannot be saved or dies while it is being relocated will be replaced with similar plant life.
Be advised that the County Sanitation Dept as well as Long Beach Water Dept and the City of Long Beach have ongoing projects in the same vicinity as our project. We will continue to coordinate with them and try to minimize any and all disruptions to the affetced areas as we progress with our project. We thank you all for your contiued support, understanding and cooperation.

Skatepark fund-raiser

| | Comments (0) |
Celebrities, CEOs and inner-city shredders will convene today at a Beverly Hills estate.
The event will be the Stand Up For Skateparks benefit, sponsored by the Tony Hawk Foundation, and the beneficiaries will be the new skatepark to be installed at Long Beach McBride Park and the kids who use it.
The star-studded event could raise $70,000 to $80,000 or more for the park at 1550 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.
Since 2002 through his foundation, Hawk has raised more than $3 million for hundreds of parks throughout the U.S.
This year's fund-raiser, billed as an "exclusive, family-centric, action-sports carnival" will feature a live performance by Jane's Addiction, a Vert Demo with Tony Hawk and other skateboarding and BMX stars on Hawk's personal ramp. There will also be a preview of a new video game, food and live and silent auctions.
Celebrity guests are expected to include Olympian Shaun White, Andre Agassi, Lance Armstrong and numerous celebrities and action sports stars.
Information on tickets is available at http://www.standupforskateparks.org/  The website also includes some of the auction items, signed memorabilia and other items.
The nonprofit announced the choice of the Long Beach site in August.
Although $400,000 to $450,000 of Redevelopment Agency money had already been earmarked for the project, the Hawk money will provide improvements that will make it a first-class facility.
As designed, the footprint for the facility is about 14,000 square feet, 12,000 of which will be skating area.
"I don't even know how to explain it, I am so excited," 6th District Councilman Dee Andrews said at the time of the announcement.
Former Councilman Mike Donelon, who has been at the forefront of promoting skate parks in Long Beach, said when the award was announced that with the funding and the Tony Hawk connection, "I have no doubt it will be one of the premier skateparks in Southern California."
