Document shredding part deux

| | Comments (0) |

Apparently Saturday, May 21, is a good day to get your shred on. And to eject your e-waste. On the same day Councilwoman Rae Gabelich is staging her shredding, e-waste event, over in Los Altos, the Stanford Middle School PTA is staging its own drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the basketball courts at 5871 E. Los Arcos St.

Sergeant Shredder, a paper shredding and recycling company, will bring its 11-ton truck and shred documents on-site. The shredding of documents helps protect residents from identity theft. The school raised $500 in recycled paper at its last shredding event in the fall.

There will also  be a collection of electronic waste including TVs, computers, monitors, printers, scanners, telephones, VCRs, remotes, and rechargeable batteries.

Homemade food and lemonade will also be sold.

Information is available by calling Michele Kreinheder at 562-243-2171 or MicheleK90815@gmail.com

Free document shredding

| | Comments (0) |

An annual free document shredding and e-waste disposal event sponsored by Eighth District Councilwoman Rae Gabelich's office will be held Saturday, May 21, 9 a.m. to noon at Scherer Park, 4891 Atlantic Avenue.

With the growing concerns about identity theft, shredding documents is a good way to protect one's finances and ID. Future Shredding Inc., will shred five boxes of documents for free at the event and charge $5 per box after that. The shredded paper will be recycled.

Electronic waste, often described as "anything with a cord" often contains substances such as mercury and lead that are illegal to throw in the trash. Residents can bring old, broken or unused "e-waste."  Only residential e-waste will be accepted. No fluorescent tubes, batteries, or household hazardous waste.

Items will be recycled by Goodwill - proceeds go directly to Goodwill's skill development & employment programs for individuals with barriers to employment.

All cell phones will be donated to Su Casa - Ending Domestic Violence to help battered spouses and children successfully transition out of abusive homes.

EASBA recap

| | Comments (0) |

The East Anaheim Street Business Alliance staged its monthly meeting Tuesday at the Long Beach Playhouse. Here's the recap they provided for the event:

Dear Friends:

Thanks to everyone who attended our regular monthly meeting this past Tuesday afternoon.

If you were unable to attend, here is a recap of this month's meeting:

We were honored to have President F. King Alexander join us from California State University Long Beach.  Dr. Alexander gave a fascinating overview of CSULB.  According to Dr. Alexander, with over 35,000 students, CSULB is the second largest university in California - next to UCLA.

Other topics covered by Dr. Alexander:
•    There are 71,000 applications for Fall of 2011.
•    CSULB is the second safest university in the nation.
•    Every dollar spent by CSULB brings back $4.5 dollars to the surrounding community.
•    Beginning May 25th, there will be three days of graduations consisting of nine different graduation ceremonies.
•    CSULB was voted the 4th Best Public Regional University in the West by US News and World Report
•    CSULB is among Kiplinger's "100 Best Values in Public Colleges".
•    In 2009-2010, CSULB had the largest, most diverse, most successful graduating class in its history - more than 8,600 students received more than 9,100 degrees.

We were also privileged to have Julie Bartolotto from the Historical Society of Long Beach join us.  Julie gave an interesting overview of the Historical Society and discussed their recent Woman, Work, War program that looked at the history of the "Rosie the Riveters" that played an important role in the wartime mobilization efforts in Long Beach during WWII.  She also discussed the Historical Society's upcoming look at the many New Deal infrastructure projects that took place during the 1930's.

We were also fortunate to have Officer Claudia Lopez join us from the Long Beach Police East Division.  Officer Lopez gave an update on her assignment as Patrol Resource Officer for the area and discussed the increase in auto burglaries within the District.  She said that auto burglaries can be prevented my making sure our vehicles are locked and that there is nothing of value visible.

Finally, Armando Vazquez-Ramos from Councilmember Patrick O'Donnell's Office discussed upcoming events within District 4 including the upcoming Chat with Pat and the upcoming Breakwater Awareness Month.

The EASBA Board of Directors once again would like to thank Dr. Alexander, Julie Bartolotto, Officer Lopez and Armando Vazquez-Ramos for their time and informative presentations.

We hope to see you at our next meeting on Tuesday, May 24th when our guest speaker will be George Chapjian, Director of Long Beach Parks, Recreation and Marine.

Be sure to check our website www.EASBA.com for all the latest news and updates.  In the meantime, keep your eyes open for all the exciting EASBA improvement projects.
