Youth empowerment speaker

 Angel Macias, the CEO and founder of California Families in Focus, will be the guest speaker at the weekly Youth Empowerment Workshop Wednesday, May 4 at 4 p.m. at the Martin Luther King Jr. Park social hall, 1950 Lemon Ave.

 This is the third of eight weekly workshops presented by Toastmasters and promoted by the Sixth District City Council office and other organizations that focus on assisting local teens develop communication skills and enhance self-confidence.

 Macias heads a Long Beach nonprofit organization that offers a variety of programs and events for youth and families to achieve empowerment. Macias has worked with the community for 14 years working with and educating youth on issues such as gangs,race relations, drugs, STDS, HIV/AIDS, self-esteem, relationships, empowerment, community volunteerism, conflict resolution, cultural awareness, higher-education and others.  

 The eight-week Communication and Leadership Program, taught by Speak Out Toastmasters, Jack Roberts, Saba McKinley, and Carma Spence, is designed to improve communication and leadership skills. The workshops will help youth to overcome the fear and nervousness associated with public speaking. Information is available from the office of Councilman Dee Andrews at 562-570-6816.
