133 fix 'em requests from Schipske's walk

| | Comments (0) |
<ouncilwoman Gerrie Schipske and her staff are processing 133 service requests generated when Fifth District residents took a walk around the Rancho Estates area June 25, in search of  infrastructure issues.

"If these residents can spot 133 problems, just think of what an entire neighborhood could do," said Schipske. "It's a great way to keep your body and your neighborhood in shape."

The most common problems: raised sidewalks, cracked curbs, "alligatored" (multiple cracks and cratering) streets, faded street signs and trash cans left out after pick-up day. Some street signs were missing; and some homes had dry and overgrown foliage, presenting a fire hazard.

"We don't just walk the walk, " the councilwoman said. "The service requests are sorted out and forwarded to the city Public Works Department or whichever department applies. ... We'll keep tabs on them to see that some action is taken. Many repairs made now will save the city a lot of money in the future."

The next "Shaping Up the Fifth" is July 30, 8 to 10 a.m., covering the area east of Studebaker Road and north of Wardlow Road. All residents are invited to wear their comfortable shoes and meet in front of Keller Elementary School, 7020 Brittain St.

Schipske launches "Shaping Up" 5th District

| | Comments (0) |
Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske's "Shaping Up the 5th District" will kick off in the Rancho's neighborhood on Saturday.

District residents are encouraged to join Schipske, 9-11 a.m., 7130 E. Premium St.

"I invite residents from other areas of the 5th District to join in all of these walks so that you can see the conditions of all neighborhoods," she said.

Rather than having the city spend funds on a street-by-street infrastructure inventory, Schipske  wants to encourage walking, while getting residents involved in the process of identifying what needs to be fixed.

Schipske also  offers residents several other ways of alerting her to what needs to be fixed: a website "Service Request" form that can be at any time at www.lbdistrict5.com; email district5@longbeach.gov; contact form on her blog, www.gerrieschipske.com; or by calling her office at 562.570-6932.

Library film screening

| | Comments (0) |

The final installment of the Independent Lens documentary film series season will be aired Tuesday, June 28 at 6 p.m. at the Main Branch of the Long Beach Public Library, 101 Pacific Ave.

"Two Spirits" is a look at the life and death of Fred Martinez, a Navajo boy who believed he was part girl and became the victim at 16 of a brutal hate-crime murder.

Lynn Nibley's film is described a revealing look not only at Martinez's death but the largely unknown tradition in many Native American cultures that holds places of honor for people of integrated genders.

According to press materials "Two Spirits explores issues of national concern including the bullying and violence commonly faced by LGBT people, and the epidemic of LGBT teen suicide, and reveals the range of gender expression that has long been seen as a healthy part of many of the indigenous cultures of North America, and of Navajo culture in particular."

The airing of the film will be followed by a panel discussion. Panelists are Dr. Gabriel Estrada, Professor of Latino/Chicano Studies and American Indian Studies at CSULB; Porter Gilberg, of the Gay and Lesbian Community Center of Greater Long Beach; Lee Williams from Alpha Omega Nu Fraternity for Transmen; and Danielle Nava, Director of Programs at The California Conference for Equality and Justice (CCEJ). Moderator is Teresa Gomez, Coordinator for the City of Long Beach Humanity Dignity Program

Organizers say the purpose of the festival is to open dialogue between citizens of Long Beach and to help connect and grassroots organizations in Long Beach.

Everyone has different ideals for what makes "Green and Sustainable Long Beach," organizers say, whether it's rooftop gardens or more bicycling opportunities.

The goal of the festival's organizers is to "ignite change" in Long Beach and help catalyze the Long Beach community to take action and open dialogue.

In a prepared statement, Tiffany Chen of the Festival said "We want to focus on bringing together people and encouraging connections and collaborations between people. We also want to make it accessible to people that are new to this movement (by) bridging the gap between newcomers and seasoned sustainability experts. We hope that this year we will have something for everyone. Whether your into vermiculture, or just need help figuring out a better system to organize your recyclables, we have something here for you."

"I'm excited about this year's festival, I think that it will be a good way for my business to showcase the ways we have improved our green practices, and also get ideas about how we can keep our business green, and also give support for a cause that is worth contributing to" said Mike Krokidas, general manager of CafĂ© Ambrosia.
