Emergency preparedness pilot program

| | Comments (0) |

The Long Beach Police Department is inviting residents to attend what it hopes will be a series of educational forums entitled AWARE or Alert Well-prepared And Ready for Emergencies.

The first of these will be Wednesday, September 7 at 6 p.m. at the Veteran's Park Community Room, 101 E. 28th Street.

Here's what police say about the pilot program i is unveiling:

"Natural disasters, earthquakes, tsunamis and wild fires, as well as man made disasters, such as industrial accidents or acts of terrorism are just a few of the many possible emergencies that police and fire departments respond to in the United States. While many of these emergencies are unpredictable and are not preventable, they will affect large numbers of individuals who are unprepared to deal with such events. It is important for people to be
prepared to take appropriate action and have the knowledge to care for themselves, their
families and possibly even their community in the event of an emergency.

The Long Beach Police Department is implementing an educational pilot program for
community members who are interested in emergency preparedness and response. The
Police Department and Fire Department will be presenting information regarding what steps
people can take to better prepare themselves in the event of an emergency or disaster.
These departments will also be providing networking information and opportunities to
become more involved in the emergency response community.

If you are interested in attending this educational community event, please email your name,
contact information, and email address to LBPDwest@longbeach.gov

All community members interested in emergency preparedness are encouraged to attend.
The Police Department hopes to host presentations in other neighborhoods in the future."

Free whooping cough shots

| | Comments (0) |
The Long Beach Health Department is offering free Tdap vaccine to students in grades 7 - 12 at four public clinics scheduled before the school year begins.

The clinics are open to students in both public and private schools.

The Tdap vaccine provides protection from whooping cough, which has been present in California in epidemic levels in the last year.

A parent or guardian must be present and they are advised to bring any records of previous vaccines.

The free immunization clinics are a joint effort of the Health Department, Long Beach State's School of Nursing and the Long Beach Unified School District. The vaccine is provided by the federal Vaccine For Children's Program and the California Department of Public Health.

Free Tdap vaccine will be available:

-- Today from 3 - 6 p.m. at the Health Department, 2525 Grand Ave.

-- Wednesday and Thursday and Sept. 6, 1 - 3 p.m. each day at Tucker Elementary School, 2221 Argonne Ave.

All students in grades 7 -12 need to have a Tdap booster recorded in their school immunization record. The Tdap requirement was enacted into state law last fall and became effective July 1.

One dose of Tdap after the age of 7 meets the school requirement.

All students who have not already met the requirement will be asked for their Tdap record when they return to school.

More than 9,000 cases of whooping cough were reported in California in 2010, including 10 infant deaths. The number of cases was the most since 1947.

This year, more than 1,900 cases of whooping cough have been reported.

For information about Tdap and other school immunization requirements, visit www.ShotsForSchool.org. For information about clinics in Long Beach, call the Health Department's Immunization Project at 562.570.4212.

Free Tdap vaccines

| | Comments (0) |

Free vaccinations that protect against whooping cough are being offered by the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services for children in grades 7 through 12.

Four clinics will be held in which the Tdap vaccine, which protects against whooping as well as tetanus and diphtheria, will be offered. Whooping cough has been in California in epidemic levels in the last year.

The clinics will be Monday, August 29, 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. at the Long Beach Health Department, 2525 Grand Ave. and Wednesday, August 31, Thursday, September 1 and Tuesday, September 6, 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. at Tucker Elementary School, 2221 Argonne Ave.

A parent or guardian must be present and they are advised to bring any records of previous vaccines. All students in grades 7 -12  need to have a Tdap booster recorded in their school immunization record.

According to the Health Departement " The Tdap requirement was enacted into State law last fall and became effective July 1, 2011.  One dose of Tdap after the age of 7 meets the school requirement.  Schools in Long Beach began notifying parents about the upcoming Tdap deadline late last year and about 68 percent of students have already submitted their Tdap records.   All students who have not already met the requirement will be asked for their Tdap record when they return to school.
"More than 9,000 cases of whooping cough were reported in California in 2010, including 10 infant deaths.  The number of cases was the most since 1947.  So far this year, more than 1,900 cases of whooping cough have been reported.   Most cases of whooping cough occur between May and November so the start of school often brings additional cases.  For students who have not already had their Tdap, getting it as soon as possible will not only make school registration easier but it will also provide protection at the time it is needed most.  For information about Tdap and other school immunization requirements, visit www.ShotsForSchool.org.  For information about clinics in Long Beach, call the Long Beach Health Department Immunization Project at 562-570-4212."

Sue Ann Robinson will discuss New Deal Easel Art in Long Beach, Friday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Historical Society of Long Beach, 4260 Atlantic Ave. The presentation is one of a bevy of activities in Bixby Knolls at its monthly First Friday celebration.

Here is some information from the HSLB:

This free program is held in conjunction with the exhibit, "Rebuilding for the Future: A New Deal for Long Beach 1933 - 1942."

Long Beach Museum of Art Director of Collections, Sue Ann Robinson will talk about easel paintings created by artists employed by Roosevelt's New Deal and its WPA (Works Progress Administration), program.

Robinson discovered some of the paintings while conducting a city-wide inventory of art. Easel paintings, unlike murals painted during the New Deal, had a tendency to "wander. " Thanks to Robinson's discoveries, they are being catalogued for preservation.

The history of the works sheds light on the diversity of artists who were able to survive and continue their careers during and after the Great Depression through the federal art program.
Information is available by calling Letticia Montoya: 562-424-2220 or by e-mail at letticiam@hslb.org or online.

Schipske wants input on fire manpower

| | Comments (0) |

Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske has scheduled a District 5 "community conversation" Thursday night on whether or not staffing on fire trucks should be reduced.

The "Community Conversation" will be begin at 6:30pm at the El Dorado Community Center, 2800 Studebaker Road.

"This issue is too important not to engage the community right now," said Schipske in a prepared statement.

"In light of the fact that the city continues to 'brown out' stations  -- and now, apparently, management is floating proposals to cut staffing further -- I think the community needs to hear a full presentation and provide their input," she added.

The Bixby Knolls Literary Society will tackle Evelyn Waugh's "Brideshead Revisited" in its next meeting, Tuesday, August 9, 7 p.m, at the Expo, 4321 Atlantic Avenue.

brideshead-revisited.jpgPress materials describe the book like this:

"In this classic tale of British life between the World Wars, Waugh examines affairs of the heart. Charles Ryder finds himself stationed at Brideshead, the family seat of Lord and Lady Marchmain. Exhausted by the war (WWII), he takes refuge in recalling his time spent with the heirs to the estate before the war--years spent enthralled by the beautiful but dissolute Sebastian and later in a more conventional relationship with Sebastian's sister Julia.
Ryder portrays a family divided by an uncertain investment in Roman Catholicism and by their confusion over where the elite fit in the modern world.

Brideshead Revisited was the Book of the Month Club selection for January 1946.In 2005, it was chosen by Time magazine as one of the one hundred best English-language novels from 1923 to the present."

Street parking is available and refreshments will be provided
