The BMX and skateboarding craze is coming to North Long Beach, where the inaugural Long Beach BMX Skate Park Jam will be staged Saturday, August 20 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Hougton Park, 6301 Myrtle Avenue.
The event will feature Long Beach skaters and bikers competing for prizes including skate and bike gear and medals. Competition begins at 1:30 p.m. Signups start at10 a.m.
It is being presented by ASK Long Beach, which supports skatepark in Long Beach, and Councilmember Steven Neal.
Mike Donelon os ASK Long Beach, said he expects a crowd of 600 to attend and says its the biggest such event to be held in Long Beach thus far.
Long Beach Firefighters will provide hot dogs and refreshments.
Skateboarding lessons will be available for kids beginning at noon.
The event is also intended as a fund-raiser for repairs at the Houghton Skate Park.

Meanwhile, in other skateboarding news, work on the new facility at Ernest McBride Park is well under way and shouldbe completed within a couple of months. Another park at Orizaba is ready to go but unavailable because of landscaping around the facility. The park has been covered until the landscaping is ready.
