5th District's Good Neighbor picnic on Saturday

Councilwoman Gerrie Schipske will host the 5th Annual Fifth District Good Neighbor Festival and Picnic on Saturday,

The gathering is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Good Neighbor Park, 2800 N. Studebaker Road.

"September is National Good Neighbor Month and an excellent way to bring 5th District neighbors together to celebrate the work of neighborhood organizations, community groups, and to learn more about the businesses and city services that make our area a great place to live and to work," said Schipske in a prepared statement..

Thirty-eight residents and organizations will be honored with a Good Neighbor Award for their contribution to the community over the past year, and 36 community organizations will provide informational materials, brochures and giveaways throughout the day.

The festival will feature performances by the Elm Street Band and Golden Sands Chorus.

 Kids can play in a bounce house, have their faces painted, and get creative at the coloring station.

 Other activities include a water balloon toss, paper airplane contest and trivia.

 Goodwill of Southern Los Angeles County will provide secure document shredding and e-waste collection services.

This year's sponsors include the Port of Long Beach, the Long Beach Airport, the Long Beach Sam's Club, Willow Urgent Care, Signal Hill Petroleum, Long Beach Police Officers Association, Long Beach Firefighters Local 372 and Long Beach Lifeguard Association.

Truancy conference set for Saturday

The community is invited to attend the Long Beach Truancy Conference on Saturday, from 8:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m., at Cabrillo High School, 2001 Santa Fe Ave., Long Beach.

Hosted by the city's Department of Health and Human Services, the truancy conference - titled "On Time, Every Time" - will provide students, parents and community leaders with education, information and an opportunity to dialogue about ways to prevent truancy and create a success-oriented school.

The conference includes: ยท Doug Haubert, Long Beach City Prosecutor; the Honorable John Lawson II, site judge, Long Beach Juvenile Court;  Nancy Theberge, Public Defenders Office;  Lydia Bodin, Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office to Abolish Chronic Truancy (ACT) orogram; Claire Vermillion, referee, Long Beach Informal Juvenile Traffic Court;  Dr. Rick Tebbano, Long Beach Unified School District truancy coordinator;  Lt. Ty Hatfield, Long Beach Police Department; Marisol Ibanez, Poly Academy Of Achievers and Leaders (PAAL) program; Marc Rothenberg, attorney; and Councilman Dee Andrews.

The conference includes a resource fair, Spanish and Khmer translation services, free continental breakfast and lunch, free supply-filled school bags for the first 150 participating students, and a prize raffle.

Restoration Fair coming

  The popular Restoration Trade Fair returns to Luther Burbank School for its fourth year Sunday, Sept. 25 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

   The event has grown in scope and popularity each year.  Initially the event served as a place where owners of historic homes could gather and talk about products and making alterations and upgrades to their homes that were historically correct and conformed with city guidelines for homes in historic districts.

  It has since morphed into a a one-stop resource with more than 50 specialty vendors and exhibitors and non-profit, city, heritage, historic and community groups on hand. Local vendors and artisans offering services and consulting in a variety of areas, including landscaping and nursery resources, interior/exterior design, flooring, painting and finishing, and more. The Trade Fair will have restoration specialists to help you figure out how to start a project, so bring photos of your home with a list of questions. 
  There will also be 
demonstrations and workshops on window glazing, blacksmithing, mosaics and basket weaving. A WWII documentary about Long Beach "Long Days Working Hard" will be aired and there will be a silent auction.
  The event
 is a fundraiser for the nonprofit Rose Park Neighborhood Association (RPNA), it is Free to RPNA members and children under 18; $5 for all others.
