Vets luncheon

  The fourth annual "Honoring Those Who Serve" luncheon will he held Friday, Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. at the Hilton International Ballroom, at 701 W. Ocean Blvd. Tickets are $75 per person.
  Louis Zamperini will be the keynote speaker. A local legend, Zamperini's story inspired Laura Hillenbrand, author of the best-selling and award-winning "Seabiscuit," to tell his tale in her second book. That book, "Unbroken," was also a No. 1 New York Times best seller and award winner.
  Zamperini was an Olympic distance runner, POW and war hero. The Zamperini airfield in Torrance is named after the man called the "Torrance Tornado."
  This year's Honoree is  Damaso Sutis who became a U.S. Marine, fought at Iwo Jima and served 24 years in the Marines, spanning three wars.According to organizers, "The luncheon is an opportunity for all of us to join hands to honor America's veterans and our military for their love of country and their willingness to serve and sacrifice for the preservation of our freedoms. It will honor individuals who have made an impact in the lives of other veterans or active military members."

Lafayette Harvest Festival

 Lafayette Elementary school will play stage its annual Harvest Festival, Friday, Oct. 28 from 2:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the school playground 2445 Chestnut Ave.
 Organizers say the "Harvest Festival is an exciting, fun-filled annual fund raiser.  The monies raised this year will be used to purchase printers for our classrooms.
 Ativities include bean toss competition, hair coloring, arts and crafts and a Halloween costume contest.

Dentist to buy back candy

 Long Beach Dental Arts and dentist Steve Sutherland will be holding itheir third annual Halloween Candy Buy Back, Tuesday, Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Dental Arts has five locations and two locally that will participate: the Long Beach office at 6226 E. Spring St. Ste. 200, and Somerset Family Dentistry, 9426 Somerset Blvd., in Bellflower.
 The offices will be passing out prizes and hold raffles for children for their excess candy, which will then delivered to Operation Gratitude to be shipped to U.S. armed forces overseas.
 According to Scott Sutherland, brother of dentist Steve, the dental group gathered 600 pounds of candy the first year of the buy back and 800 pounds last year among all its offices. In addition to delivering the candy, many children also addressed cards and letters to the troops.
 In addition to promoting dental health, organizers says the candy buy back has the support of first-lady Michelle Obama's Partnership for  Healthy America, which is battling childhood obesity in the U.S.
 

Peace and Justice Summit

 Residents interested in AB 109, officially known as Criminal Justice Alignment, are invited to attend a Peace and Justice Summit, 9 a.m. to 3 pm, on Wednesday, October 26, at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, Seaside Ballroom, 300 East Ocean Blvd.
 The event is free but preregistration is required online at

 Susan Burton, a CNN Hero, will moderate the day-long event.
 
Signed into law in April by Gov. Jerry Brown, AB 109 sends non-violent, non-sexual and non-serious prison inmates back to the custody of county jails. It also puts supervision of those same inmates, once released, with county probation departments rather than the state parole office.

 Sixth District Councilman Dee Andrews, in conjunction with A New Way of Life Reentry Project and All of Us or None, are pleased to announce that CNN Hero, Susan Burton will be moderating the Long Beach Community Peace & Justice Summit, with a focus on reentry, at 9 a.m. to 3 pm, on Wednesday, October 26, at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, Seaside Ballroom, 300 East Ocean Blvd, Long Beach, CA.
Selected as the 2010 CNN Hero, Susan Burton is well-known through-out the country for creating solutions to local problems and social issues. The former incarcerated female has been seen as a premiered special guest on television shows such as The Talk, where she  was named as "one of America's mother's that moves us".  Her courageous demeanor has lead her through many trials and tribulations. She is the Founder and Executive Director of A New Way of Life Re-entry Project (ANWOL), a non-profit organization whose mission is to help women and girls break the cycle of entrapment in the criminal justice system so that they may lead healthy and satisfying lives.
The Peace and Justice Summit is designed to educate the community on the AB 109 realignment with presentations from local organizations and government agencies. In addition, a distinguished action panel comprised of State and local elected officials, as well as other key community leaders, will hear suggested policy change and testimony from people who have been released from jail or prison.  The topics of discussion include the societal barriers in relation to employment, housing, education, and suggested action steps. After focused presentations, the panel will participate in a facilitated discussion of next steps to implement and support the problems our communities face.

Chinese festival at CSULB

 PekingOpera2.JPG Cal State Long Beach will play host to its second annual Chinese Film and Culture Festival from October 20-26.
 The free event focuses on treasures of Tianjin province in China, and includes screenings of recent Chinese films and a cultural heritage and craft exhibit that features bottle painting, paper cutting and fabric sculpture.
  The opening ceremony will be on Thursday, October 20, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Carpenter Performing Arts Center. It will include a performance by the Peking Opera and a Bian Lian performance. Bian Lian is a dramatic part of Chinese opera in which performers wear bright costumes and masks that they change quickly.
  Among those in attendance will be Qiu Shaofang, consul general of China to Los Angeles, officials from Tianjian province and Cal State Long Beach representatives.
  During the festival, eight films exploring how Chinese media producers envision their society for domestic and international audiences will screen in the Beach Auditorium at the University Student Union, room 115.
  A cultural heritage and craft exhibit will be held in the University Student Union
Ballroom, where artists will demonstrate traditional Chinese handicrafts such as papercutting and Yangliuqing Spring Festival Pictures, and the fabric sculptures of Chinese artist Chang Cheng will be on display.
  The event is open to the public.

WESCA meeting and clean-up this week

The West East Side Community Association is staging its monthly meeting and clean-up, here are the details for David Henseler.

It is time again for WESCA.
 
THURSDAY, October 20th at 6:30pm is the next WESCA meeting. We will meet at St. Vincent De Paul, located at 2750 E. Pacific Coast Hwy, on the corner of 17th Street.  We will have Officer Claudia Lopez attending our meeting.  She is the Patrol Resource Officer for East Division and is fluent in Spanish.
 
On SATURDAY, October 22nd, we will have our monthly alley clean up.  This month we will meet at 2153 E. Anaheim St. (corner of Dawson).  We will start at 8am an have a BBQ at the end.  Water and gloves will be provided.  We especially need people with a truck to come out and help.
 
Please try to be there at 8am so we can make the most of the trash truck that will be there at 8am.

Documentary airs at Library

deaf_jam.jpg  "Deaf Jam" a documentary about deaf teenager Aneta Brodski entering the slam poetry scene in New York using American Sign Language poetry, is the monthly documentary being showed at the Long Beach Main Branch Library. Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 6 p.m. at the library auditorium 101 Pacific Ave. auditorium.
  According to press material on the film:
   "In a remarkable twist of fate, Aneta, a deaf Israeli, meets and then collaborates with Tahani -- a hearing Palestinian slam poet. They create a hearing/deaf duet touching on their shared personal and cultural experiences -- generating a new form of slam poetry that speaks to both the hearing and the deaf."
  
A discussion and audience Q&A will follow the film. Panelists are to include Chuck Scarpaci, Director Sign Language & Interpreting Services Long Beach and Dickie Lewis of Deaf West Theatre in Los Angeles
 
The film is sponsored by ITVS Community Cinema, Long Beach Central Area Association/MusicUNTOLD and the Long Beach Public Library.

Piano recital

piano recital by David Rubinstein  Saturday, Oct. 22,  at 1 p.m. at the Main

   Sponsored by Los Angeles County Supervisor Don Knabe, the recital will feature the music of 19th century Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, who maybe best known for music he wrote for Henrik Ibsen's play "Peer Gynt.".

   Rubenstain is an acclaimed classical pianist who has tored extensively to major music halls in the United States and abroad. He has also recorded session music for Hollywood Studios.

Broadway comes to Wrigley

 The Stearns Musical Theatre Company will perform two hours of musical theater songs Saturday at the second annual Broadway in Wrigley production.
 Sponsored by the Wrigley Association, the show will be staged Saturday, Oct. 22 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Veterans Park, 101 E. 28th Street. Admission is $10 per person or $70 for a group of 10.
 Stearns Musical Theatre is a nonprofit troupe of community residents backed by Partners of Parks. It stages productions that give emerging and first-time performers a chance to display the musical theater chops.
 The Broadway show will include songs and dance from Broadway musicals including "Wicked," "Man of La Mancha," "Hairspray," "Guys and Dolls" and "Funny Girl."
 Funds raised will benefit the troupe and Wrigley Association.
 The Stearns Musical Theatre Company was established in 2001 and has been performing locally for 10 years.

Jobs rally Thursday

 The Long Beach Democratic Club is inviting activists and residents to rally Thursday as part of  the AFL-CIO's "America Want's to Work" National Week of Action.
 The gathering Thursday, Oct. 13 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Lone Sailor Navy Memorial sculpture in Bluff Park at the 3100 Block of E. Ocean Blvd., is in support of the American Jobs Act, expected to come before Congress this month.
  Among those attending will be Long Beach City Councilmembers Steven Neal and Gerrie Schipske.
 According to supporters of the bill, it will create "initiatives and benefits for working-
class Americans such as the "Returning Heroes" tax credit for Veterans,
tax cuts to help small businesses hire and grow and investments in

Food Finders Harvest Ball

  For the first time, the Harvest Ball will be held without founder Arlene Mercer at the helm. But Mercer's presence will be felt, literally and figuratively.
 Mercer, who retired this year after 22 years with the organization, will be a special honoree at the event which serves as Food Finders' main annual fund-raiser, Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Grand Event Center.
 Based in Long Beach. the Food Finders food bank has been working to feed the hungry since 1989, through "rescuing" food from local producers, helping reduce food waste and providing  food to nonprofit and faith-based agencies throughout Southern California.
 To date the organization says it has provided more than 88 million pounds of food to local relief agencies.
 The Harvest Ball will begin at 6 p.m. with  registration, silent auction and a reception. Dinner will be at 7 p.m. followed by an auction emceed by Randy Gordon, president and CEO of the Long Beach Chamber.
 Mercer will be honored at the event and is slated to receive and award from Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster. Mercer founded Food Finders in 1989 and stepped down in June.

Small business grants

Small businesses in Long Beach are encouraged to apply for grants being offered  by the Women's Business Council.
 Here are the details:

 The Women's Business Council of the Long Beach Chamber of Commerce is awarding funds of $5,000 to a small business owner to maintain or grow his/her business through their Women's Business Council Grant for Small Businesses program.

Every business fitting the following criteria is eligible to apply:

·        Business must be located in Long Beach
·        Business must have 10 full time employees or less
·        Must have been in business a minimum of 3 years
·        Must have had collaborative and/or community involvement

6th District clean-up

 Community members are encouraged to participate in a community clean-up Saturday in the 1300 block of E. 17th Street from 8 to 11 a.m.
 The event, sponsored by the Antioch Youth Ministry, the Neighborhood Services Bureau and Councilman Dee Andrews, will embark from 1304 E. 17th Street.
 Rakes, shovels, trash bags and gloves will be provided. Community service hours are available. Information is available by calling Andrews' office at 562-570-6816.
