For the first time, the Harvest Ball will be held without founder Arlene Mercer at the helm. But Mercer's presence will be felt, literally and figuratively.
Mercer, who retired this year after 22 years with the organization, will be a special honoree at the event which serves as Food Finders' main annual fund-raiser, Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Grand Event Center.
Based in Long Beach. the Food Finders food bank has been working to feed the hungry since 1989, through "rescuing" food from local producers, helping reduce food waste and providing  food to nonprofit and faith-based agencies throughout Southern California.
To date the organization says it has provided more than 88 million pounds of food to local relief agencies.
The Harvest Ball will begin at 6 p.m. with  registration, silent auction and a reception. Dinner will be at 7 p.m. followed by an auction emceed by Randy Gordon, president and CEO of the Long Beach Chamber.
Mercer will be honored at the event and is slated to receive and award from Long Beach Mayor Bob Foster. Mercer founded Food Finders in 1989 and stepped down in June.
Tickets are $80 per person, $1,000 for a table sponsor. Information and tickets are available by calling 562-598-3003 or online.
