Residents interested in AB 109, officially known as Criminal Justice Alignment, are invited to attend a Peace and Justice Summit, 9 a.m. to 3 pm, on Wednesday,
October 26, at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment
Center, Seaside Ballroom, 300 East Ocean Blvd.
The event is free but preregistration is required online at www.peaceandjustice2011.org. Information is available at the Office of Councilman Dee Andrews at 562-570-6816.
Susan Burton, a CNN Hero, will moderate the day-long event.
Signed into law in April by Gov. Jerry Brown, AB 109 sends non-violent, non-sexual and non-serious prison inmates back to the custody of county jails. It also puts supervision of those same inmates, once released, with county probation departments rather than the state parole office.
Councilman Dee Andrews' office is helping to sponsor the event. Here is his office release:

In addition, a distinguished action panel comprised of State and local elected officials, as well as other key community leaders, will hear suggested policy change and testimony from people who have been released from jail or prison. The topics of discussion include the societal barriers in relation to employment, housing, education, and suggested action steps. After focused presentations, the panel will participate in a facilitated discussion of next steps to implement and support the problems our communities face.
