 4th Annual Popeye Toy Run

WHAT:           4th Annual Popeye's Toy Run

WHEN:           Saturday, December 3, 2011 from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM

WHERE:        Martin Luther King Jr., Park, 1950 Lemon Avenue, Long Beach

Several motorcycle clubs from Long Beach & the surrounding communities will gather to spread the cheer of Christmas for children in the 6th District of Long Beach. The motorcyclists, made up of off-duty Sheriff's and Los Angeles County employees, will meet at 10 a.m. at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, off of Shoreline Drive and will be traveling northbound on Alamitos Avenue to their destination at Martin Luther King Jr., Park. Once they've arrived, they will pass out over three hundred toys to the youth of the Midtown area for the holiday season. Free entertainment, games, crafts, and bike raffles will also be provided. "It's truly a blessing to have these bikers coming together for our kids because this maybe the only Christmas gifts that these children will get this year. You can really tell that the bikers are pouring their hearts and souls into this to make sure our youth keep smiling", said Councilman Andrews.

Ann Matulin, Secretary of the all women's Just Us Motorcycle club, mentioned, "My husband, Mark "Popeye" Matulin, loved making people happy and fulfilled. In honor of his memory, we bring gifts to children who might not be able to get something this year. Last year we provided over 600 children with toys, meals and fun activities.

Blacks in Civil War documentary

| | Comments (0) |
Frank Martin, producer of the award winning documentary "For Love of Liberty: The Story of America's Black Patriots" will be in Long Beach Sunday, Nov. 20 at 3 p.m. to air a portion of his film at Earnest McBride Park & Cal Rec Community Center, 1550 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave.
According to promotional material: "If prevalent and accepted accounts of American History - both scholarly and those portrayed by Hollywood - are to be believed, the face of the United States Armed Services was white.

"The truth is over 5,000 Black soldiers fought in the American Revolution. And though most were not recognized as citizens or even free man, more than 200,000 took up arms in the Civil War. Over 380,000 African-Americans served in WW I and more than 2,000,000 defended this country in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Yet most accounts of their valiant actions are absent from history books and contemporary film."

Although the documentary is four hours and spans the history of blacks in American warfare, Sunday's screening will deal with the Civil War period. The screening is being presented by Long Beach Central Area Association/MusicUNTOLD at the monthly NAACP meeting in tribute to Veterans Day and 150th anniversary of Civil War.
