Funnel cloud hits Lucerne Valley area

| | Comments (0) |
A weak tornado-like cloud touched down near Lucerene Valley this afternoon at 1:45 p.m., but does not appear to have done any damage.

The land spout was seen about five miles east of Lucerene Valley and had winds ranging from 65 to 85 miles per hour, said National Weather Service meteorologist Mark Moede.

"They're less powerful, they're weaker," Moede said when describing some of the differences between a tornado and a land spout.

He said there were no reports of damage. A firefighter in Lucerne Valley said he wasn't aware of any damage from the cloud.

Moede said the rest of the county did not experienc severe weather.

"The rest of the county just saw typical afternoon thunderstorms over the mountains and
deserts," he said.

There is a slight chance of thunderstorms in the mountains and deserts again Thursday, but Moede said they would not be as widespread as today.
