APPLE VALLEY -- A man armed with a handgun and carrying a bag of methamphetamine led sheriff's deputies on a high speed chase Monday, sheriff's officials said.

San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies arrested Aaron John Smith, 32, and his passenger, Cynthia Rivera, 41, at the end of the chase in the 21800 block of Panoche Road.

A deputy tried to pull over Smith near the corner of Navajo and Bear Valley roads at 9:29 a.m., but he refused to stop. Sheriff's deputies said the man reached speeds of 70 mph and ran stop signs.

Smith stopped after the deputy used his patrol car to bump Smith's car, disabling it. Smith jumped out of the vehicle, ran to an apartment complex and tossed a handgun onto the roof.

He also threw out a bag of meth while fleeing, sheriff's officials said. Deputies arrested Smith on suspicion of felony evading, possessing drugs and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Rivera was also arrested because she had meth in her possession, sheriff's officials said.
