NTSB: Engineer was texting on duty on day of wreck

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Federal investigators say cell phone records show that the engineer involved in the deadly wreck of a Metrolink commuter train sent and received text messages while on duty that day.

The National Transportation Safety Board said in a statement today that the records will be correlated with other investigative findings to determine the times of those messages.

The board did not say how many messages were sent and received.

The NTSB requested the records after media reports that two teenage rail buffs had exchanged text messages with engineer Robert Sanchez shortly before his train collided head-on with a freight train in suburban Los Angeles.

The wreck killed 25 people and injured more than 130.
