REDLANDS -- The City Council decided to fill the treasurer's position via appointment, though members don't yet know whom they will choose.

At its meeting Wednesday, the council had the option of filling the treasurer's seat by appointment or by holding a special election in March.

The post has been vacated by Mike Reynolds, who resigned last month before pleading guilty to charges of felony forgery and altering records.
At least one council member believes the city can get by without an elected treasurer.

After Reynolds' arrest, the council reallocated many of the treasurer's duties to the Finance Department, an arrangement Mayor Pro Tem Pat Gilbreath said is working.

"I don't think we need the treasurer's position," Gilbreath said. "I think it's been handled appropriately by the reallocation."
