A 72-year-old Barstow man was arrested Saturday after shooting a woman he lived with, authorities said.

George Foote was booked into the Barstow jail on suspicion of attempted murder. Bail was set at $500,000.

A woman called San Bernardino County sheriff's dispatchers around 2:25 p.m. Saturday and told them that she had just been shot at a home on Soap Mine Road.

Someone then called 9-1-1 again to say that a friend was driving the victim, 48-year-old Theresa Stores, to Barstow Community Hospital.

Before being flown to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, she told deputies that Foote had shot her with a shotgun.

Foote initially told deputies he and Stores were home together when he heard a shot behind his house, according to a sheriff's news release.

After deputies confronted him with evidence contradicting him, Foote claimed it was self-defense.

A loaded 12-gauge shotgun was found in a gun safe in Foote's bedroom.
