La Verne to build traffic signal at site of September accident

A traffic signal is being constructed at Fruit Street and Base Line Road in La Verne -- the intersection where an elderly San Dimas man was killed in September.

Work on the traffic signal started Nov. 17, and could be completed by mid-February, Caltrans spokeswoman Judy Gish said.

"But that's if the light poles, which are fabricated on the East Coast, arrive when they're supposed to," Gish said.

Local resident Mike Manson and some of his neighbors have pushed for a traffic signal at the intersection, where Hugh Mccrabbe, 86, was killed Sept. 8 in a three-car crash.

"It's taken five years, and if it was four years and eight months, it could have saved a life," Manson said.

Witnesses said they saw a vehicle driven by Mccrabbe fail to yield to oncoming traffic at the intersection, according to police.

A vehicle traveling east on Base Line sideswiped Mccrabbe's vehicle that was then pushed into a third vehicle. The third vehicle was in the westbound left lane and waiting to go south on Fruit from Base Line.

Mccrabbe was pronounced dead at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center.

Manson, who has thick manila envelopes of numerous police-reported crashes at the intersection, had requested the signal even before Mccrabbe's death.

Manson's efforts helped get the signal constructed, said Dan Keesey, director of public works for La Verne.

"He was helpful in his lobbying efforts and legislatures," Keesey said.

"I'm glad it's coming, finally."

But while Manson and Keesey are pleased that the signal will be installed, they disagree on whether the city of La Verne in July 2003 requested a traffic study from Caltrans for the intersection.

Manson said he possesses an e-mail exchange with Kessey that appears to indicate that the city did not request the study.

Earlier this week, Keesey said the city did ask for the study, which could have resulted in the signal being installed sooner.
