San Bernardino Planning Commission recommends 1,000-home project
By a four-to-three vote Wednesday night, the San Bernardino Planning Commission recommended the City Council and mayor approve plans by Inland Communities Corp. to build a 1,000-home project in the foothills northeast of Cal State San Bernardino.
The vote came despite complaints from local hang gliders and environmentalists about the project

Hmm housing market in the garbage, economy not doing too good. lots of empty repo homes
hey lets build 1000 new homes
LOL what kind of drugs aare they all on. I want some
Do you know how windy it gets here? Is it wise to build houses so close to the foothills, taking into account our fire seasons?
when your on that kind of drug, winds and fires mean nothing
Its all about money. Bring in Alan Stewart to buy up the land, sell it back to the City. Then only allow Matich to put in the infrasructure, and the kickbacks continue. Its really not about housing, as can plainly be seen 1000 new homes in this economy, when thousands of homes in SB sit empty. Why would you expect the City council to do anything other than what is in the best interests. They are there to line their own pockets after all. I got out of SB 3 years ago and it was the best move I made. Do yourself a favor and MOVE.
And the concerns continue… If you live, work or educate yourself in the greater Verdemont area, you know now first hand how much fun University Parkway and Kendal to Palm to the 215 Freeway is today. Now throw in 1000 more homes behind Cal State. That equals about 2,500 more vehicles (@ 2.5 vehicles per home). If you think traffic is now bad, just wait.
Then remember the fact that this is a HIGH FIRE area which equals evacuation routes in times of urgency or panic. Additionally, after the area is reworked and stair-stepped to allow hillside building, the rains will no doubt come and the flooding / mudslides begin. Again this will limit or restrict any evacuation or ingress/egress to this area.
Another community with one major road in/out. The builder is now pointing to the new road of North Campus Parkway which goes nowhere. It dead ends into Kendal which is already handling capacity traffic especially at morning and afternoon rush hours combined with Cal State class traffic throughout the day and night. Sometime in the future North Campus Parkway will feed into the westbound 215 (only) but as the Federal Government, State Government and SANBAG are broke for the foreseeable future, this small expansion will not happen for at least 10 – 15 years at best.
With luck the City Planning Commission will have time resolve this massive congestion problem before this development is started and completed. Once started, the commercial traffic (trucks) servicing this community build-up will only exasperate the routine drive to the grocery store.
Growth is good for San Bernardino but it MUST be well planned to accent the surrounding community not just the new area that is coming. The infrastructure in its current state can not handle this projected growth. The City’s elected leaders today have an opportunity to effectively address this traffic concern before it becomes an issue of unbelievable proportion. I have heard the builder’s initial presentation for this project and I am not near convinced they have areas outside this new community satisfactorily addressed to handle the impacts that they bring to Verdemont. The community’s voice must be loud, frequent and well thought-out to be heard not only at City Hall but also at the builder’s office.
Traffic isn't even that bad. You act like an entire freeway remodeling isn't in the process of being built either. I say build it. Let the economic growth follow. Hard working families will move in and that is exactly what San Bernardino needs. With new families coming in, demands for a better downtown will grow. I am looking at the positives while everyone just seems to be crying about something. You guys are a bunch of big babies. Boohoo.
I love living in Northern San Bernardino despite the looks of disgust from people when they learn I live in SAN BERNARDINO (yuk). I live here dispite the winds. I live here despite a lot of things, because I LOVE the open areas behind Cal State. I love the hikes while watching the handgliders land and meeting my walking neighbors along the way. I love to mountain bike on the many trails. If San Bernardino takes the reason I live here away, the only thing I am left with is the nasty looks! I could still love it if the City made the builders do it right.
If they are going to do it, I hope they do it so as to keep the hiking, mountain biking and handgliding available to the people who live here. Lets pray they build moderate size homes with unique designs on 1/2 acre lots. They could build pockets of parks in and around them and they would all be connected by walking/biking paths that also connect to the mountain trails. If they could build something like what is in Claremont; It would be wonderful!
If they just cram as many cookie cutter track homes into as much space as possible with some token "park" with no access to the mountain trails, then it will be terrible! Literally my reason for living here will be gone and I'll sadly move.
Typical! This may be a joke to the San Bernardino County planning commission, but is not a joke to those who must be exposed daily to the dust, traffic, eye sores, crime, pollution, and inherent potential fire danger! The Commission consistently shows their inexperience, uninterest, and nonchalant approach to serious county matters. If you've ever been to a hearing in the Chambers, you'll see their ponderous yawns and lack of questions, they give off a shining example of a "ho hum" day for them, when in fact it is just the opposite for those who are paying $1,000 to have their appeal heard. This current Commission makes the County look even more corrupt and scandalous then it already is!
