Funeral services for Alfred Navor of Colton, the first Latino to be promoted to the rank of captain in the San Bernardino Fire Department, will be at 10 a.m. Monday in the All Souls Mausoleum at Our Lady Queen of Peace in Montecito Memorial Park.

He will be entombed with his late wife.

Navor died Nov. 18 in Kaiser's Fontana Hospital after a long illness. Cause of death was respiratory failure complicated by pulmonary fibrosis and possibly pneumonia. He was 79.

He was a native of San Bernardino born Sept. 28, 1929.

Navor's son, Michael Navor, said his father was very proud of his achievement of reaching the rank of captain. "He never let me forget it. He used to remind me all the time."

Michael Navor talked of a gift he got from his father that helped him conquer many obstacles.

"One of the things I learned from my father was a very strong work ethic. He was a very hard worker.

The elder Navor used to joke ruefully that all those years of rushing into fires and breathing the chemical smoke "turned my lungs to leather."

In addition to his son, Michael, Navor leaves another son, Alfred Navor of Honolulu, and two daughters, Lydia Navor-Standley and Theresa Mantz, seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
