Conductor: Light was green before deadly crash

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The conductor aboard the Metrolink train that collided with a freight in September says the warning light along the track was green before the deadly crash in Los Angeles.

The claim announced today by conductor Robert Heldenbrand contradicts findings from federal investigators that the Metrolink train ran a red light and caused the collision that killed 25 people.

The National Transportation Safety Board has said three tests showed the signal system was working.

John Gilbert, Heldenbrand's attorney, said in a Los Angeles Times story that the conductor saw the green light about a mile from the crash as the train was leaving a station. It was not clear whether the red light should have flashed by then.

Metrolink spokesman Francisco Oaxaca did not immediately return a phone message.
