Fontana saw a slew of openings in 2008

Perhaps it is no surprise that Best Life magazine recently ranked Fontana No. 24 on its list of top 100 places to raise a family.

The city has seen a slew of grand openings this year, including the Lewis Library and Technology Center, Heritage Center, Fontana Park and Center Stage Theater.

In his State of the City address, Mayor Mark Nuaimi described the $65 million Lewis Library and Technology Center as a place of dreams and opportunities.

The library opened its doors in April.

It features children's, adult and young adult libraries, the 330-seat Steelworkers' Auditorium, a career center, homework center, individual and group study rooms as well as a coffee bar.
The library is also home to more than 100,000 books and more than 200 computers with Internet access.

The city's new 570,000-gallon Aquatic Center was completed in August, and has a 14-lane competition pool, instructional pool, interactive splash area as well as two water slides.

The complex sits on the $61.5 million, 40-acre Fontana Park, and features an outdoor pavilion, fitness center, cultural art walkway, three-concrete-pools skate park, sports arena and playground area.

More than 1,000 trees were planted there.

The Center Stage Theater, formerly known as the Fontana Theater, raised its curtain in July. It cost $6.5 million to renovate the city landmark.

In February, the California Speedway was renamed to Auto Club Speedway of Southern California. Under the 10-year agreement between the Auto Club and International Speedway Corp., the Speedway must spend a certain amount of money on building new amenities, which requires contracting with local businesses.

The 92,100-seat track hosts two NASCAR events each year. According to a recent study, the track pumps more than $210 million annually into the county and surrounding areas.

The City Council in December approved an industry-backed fireworks ordinance that repeals the city's ban on the sale of so-called "safe-and-sane" fireworks, which went into effect July 5.
