RIVERSIDE (AP) -- Authorities say four Riverside police officers were trapped inside a house but escaped unharmed after they were fired on while trying to conduct a probation search at a home in a gated community.

Riverside County sheriff's Sgt. Dennis Guttierez says the suspected gunman--33-year-old Joe Armenta--remained barricaded inside the house in unincorporated Jurupa for about six hours before surrendering this morning.

More than 50 deputies, police and highway patrol officers surrounded the house, and evacuated six surrounding homes during the standoff.

The trapped officers radioed for help, saying they were pinned down when the suspect fired shots at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. A sheriff's SWAT team arrived and rescued the officers about an hour later.

Gutierrez says no one was injured during the standoff.
