Sheriff Gary Penrod to retire this month
San Bernardino County Sheriff Gary Penrod said Tuesday he plans to retire at the end of January.
Penrod, 60, a 38-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department, was elected to the top job in 1994. He told The Sun and Inland Valley Daily Bulletin he plans to pursue other interests.
An official announcement is expected Wednesday.
Penrod has lived in the county since 1953. He graduated from Redlands High School and attended San Bernardino Valley College, Victor Valley College, UC Santa Barbara and UC Riverside. He joined the Sheriff's Department in 1971 and moved up the ranks, from deputy to deputy chief. He took on the additional role of county coroner when the two offices merged in 2005.
No successor has been named. Athough sheriff is an elected position, the county's Board of Supervisors is able to make an interim appointment in instances such as this.

Dont forget Penrod tipped of Floyd Tidwell about the imminent search warrant that the SBSO was going to serve on Tidwell to recover 100's of stolen guns that Tidwell stole when he was Sheriff. Penrod has more than a few shadows on his career. It's just a pity the San Bernardino DA is in his pocket, as he should be where ex-sheriff Corona is right now...on trial!
Sheriff Penrod was a great leader and a pleasure to work for.....
Another good public servant retiring ("being retired")due to the political climate that has gotten completely out of control in SBCo. When all these elected officials are sharing the same pot of money to get reelected, the "code of silence" about the Good Olde Boy (GOB) indiscretions becomes unmanageable to anyone with a conscience trying to remain in a position of authority.
One must remember, Penrod was an appendage of Floyd Tidwell, the most crooked sheriff this county has ever seen.
And that bogus shrink/ of a wife he has?
My view is that Penrod got too big for his britches and testified for his fellow crooked sheriff, Mike Corona in Orange County.
Now Penrod has iron underwear 'cause he has a lot of knowledge about the CIA- Contra-cocaine-freeway Ricky Ross dealing dope he rec'd in SB County -this was all back in the eighties, so if it's past anyone bedtime, good Nite!
I worked with Gary Penrod when he was a Sgt. I can tell you first hand he was in bed with more than just the a few of the hired help and I don't mean just the female deputies he rolled around with in the under cover units but a few informants scared to say no. He covered for the good ole boys and was closer to all the Tidwells than a pair of Siamese twins. He played the game and came out on top. I imagine he is leaving for reasons unrelated to being Sheriff and if not maybe some of his 'bad boy" behavior has caught up with him. Farewell Gary...wonder if your conscience will ever catch up with you.
Gary Penrod was an honorable man until he became Sheriff of our county! He had every opportunity to take care of the missing gun situation and didn't. If anyone cared to look a little closer they would have found that Sheriff Dick Williams had those same opportunities, (responsibilities), and he was a more miserable failure than Penrod! For what its worth, Sheriff Penrod used the color of authority to cloak more than a few corrupt incidents that occured during his watch, one of which peaked the interest of this blogger was the Bailbond debacle! The so called investigation leading to more than 18 arrests, has dragged on for more than 5 years now without closure! Did he use it as a cover to hide something else? Only the shadows know for sure!!
