Chino police officers involved in Papa John's shootout identified
The rank and last names of all six Chino police officers involved in the fatal shootout at a Papa John's restaurant in February have been released.
Sgt. Mensen, Officer Mutrux, Officer Villaran, Officer Paul, Officer Tamparong and Cpl. Lisner were named by Chino Spokeswoman Michelle Van Der Linden and the San Bernardino County District Attorney's office.
The city refused to release the officer's first names. It was not clear which officer fired the fatal shots or which officer was injured in the shoot out.
Two men, Edward Ramon Cisneros and Joel Anthony Jaquez, allegedly fired at Chino police officers who responded to a robbery at the Papa John's restaurant at 12615 Central Ave. on Feb. 1.
As they attempted to flee the area both men were shot by police and initially hospitalized in critical condition.
An innocent bystander, 23-year-old Daniel Balandran of Rubidoux, was shot and killed by a Chino police officer during the shootout between police and the two alleged robbers.
Cisneros, of La Mirada, and Jaquez, of Hacienda Heights, both 27, have pleaded not guilty to murder and 13 other felonies for their suspected involvement in the February robbery of the Chino pizzeria that ended in Baladran's death.
They are each charged with murder, four counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with a firearm on a police officer, two counts of robbery, and one count each of burglary, criminal threats, and kidnaping to commit robbery.
Cisneros pleaded not guilty to the charges on March 18, and Jaquez pleaded not guilty Monday.
The men are due in West Valley Superior Court this morning.
