Megan's Wings plans fundraiser to continue efforts for families of cancer patients

Little Megan Savage lost her battle with leukemia six years ago, but her family, friends and supporters continue to work to help others with the disease.

Each spring, Megan's Wings, a nonprofit organization named in her honor, hosts a dinner/auction and Texas hold'em tournament. And every fall there is a run sponsored in her hometown of Upland.

The spring fundraiser is scheduled from 6 p.m. to midnight on May 9, at the Gibson Senior Center, 250 N. Third St., Upland.

Tickets are $50 per person, which will include dinner, a drink ticket and the poker tournament buy-in. There will be live and silent auctions. Proceeds will benefit leukemia research portfolio.

The Savage family remains interested in the latest research, institutes and hospitals making inroads with this disease.

The disease forced the elementary school student Megan to stay home from school and away from friends. She was isolated, but never lost faith. She battled courageously for almost three years before she couldn't fight any more.

"This is personal for us. When Megan was so sick, our family was very fortunate to have a circle of people we could count on. We had family and friends who helped us so much. Not every family has that and that's what we try to help out with," said Kim Savage, Megan's mom.

"We feel very fortunate to be able to help give back."

Megan's Wings supports local families of children battling cancer. It has helped grant wishes for children through the Make a Wish Foundation, it adopts families during the holidays and, in general, is a welcoming organization of individuals who want to reach out to others in need.

"The dinner and Texas hold'em tournament is a friendly/beginner event for people who want a fun way to help," Savage said.

"The fall run is very popular, growing each year, but not everyone runs. Last year, 700 people participated. It was so heartwarming. This whole thing has grown beyond what we originally intended which was to celebrate Megan's life. We still do that, but now we also are able to help others. The foundation provides an avenue for people who want to help, to help."

For planning purposes, Savage said she would like to have reservations for the evening made by Friday.

For tickets, contact Kim or Dave Savage at ksavage@meganswings.org or call (909) 608-9152. Tickets also can be purchased at Akbar Auto Service, 725 N. Benson Ave., Upland.
