New additions arriving at Cal Poly's Arabian Horse Center

The population at Cal Poly Pomona is growing by leaps and bounds -- and gallops.

By the time the stork is finished in the next few weeks, 10 new fillies and colts are expected to arrive at the W.K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Center, according to the university Web site.
Each year, the center breeds 15 to 20 mares.

During the 11-month gestation period, student volunteers are assigned to the pregnant mares. The students learn to care for the horses and participate in the foaling process.

The first horse to arrive this year was Baylee, a bay-colored filly by Queens Reign, born Feb.
12.

Dash, a colt, was born March 3, followed by Esprit on March 12 and Jazzy on March 23.

An unnamed foal born to Dainty Danser arrived this week, with five more expected soon at the center.

The students working with the horses often get to name their foals.

However, Esprit got her name from a community member who won the opportunity to watch the foaling process and name the horse. The center will again offer the opportunity from 1 to 5 p.m. May 3 at the Southern California Tasting & Auction at Cal Poly Pomona.
