Rancho Cucamonga Community Foundation hosts Second City troupe at fundraiser
Supporters of the arts have their chance to make sure local school children have an opportunity to start a lifetime love affair with singing, dancing and acting.
The Rancho Cucamonga Community Foundation will present its annual Gala for the Arts on May 16, at the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center.
Headlining the evening of entertainment within the Lewis Family Playhouse will be The Second City Comics. The comedy troupe has produced a who's who in the industry ranging from Bill Murray to John Belushi from Mike Myers to Stephen Colbert. The present group will perform material from the company's archives as well as brand new pieces written to the 2009 cast.
Tickets are $100 per person. A raffle also is being conducted with opportunities to win a grand prize of a $2,000 shopping spree at Victoria Gardens and a chance at bringing home two sets of seats for the 2009-2010 Lewis Family Playhouse programs along with backstage time with the headlining entertainer.

Raffle tickets are $25. All proceeds from this fundraiser benefits arts
programs for the community. The Foundation provides student
scholarships in the areas of performing and visual arts; provides
funding for artist-in-residence programs at local schools; finances
public art exhibits; and sponsors 250 school student field trips to the
Lewis Family Playhouse.
Continued community support of the arts is vital, according to Linda Bryan, Foundation board member overseeing the upcoming gala.
"I really believe in promoting the arts in the community, and the Foundation has done that," she said. "I was a theater major in college and found a place in that type of program. It was a wonderful experience for me and I want others to have that same experience."
This year the Foundation has relaxed its expectations for the evening. The dress code is California casual.
Nick Robinson is hard at work putting the finishing touches on plans for a tropical theme throughout the event. The hall will be filled with flowers, a volcano, sand and palm trees.
Polynesian dancers will entertain and local guitarist/singer Clark Atterbury has volunteered to perform.
Impressions Catering is overseeing the menu of delicious appetizers with wine and heavenly desserts. The festivities are planned from 6 to 8 p.m. when the show will switch to the Lewis Family Playhouse for The Second City production.
If the cause wasn't important enough, Bryan said, a local man called and bought four tickets when he heard about The Second City performance. It seems he proposed to his wife during a company show 45 years ago.
"That's pretty neat for that family, but the whole evening really is going to be so much fun," Bryan said.
In addition to raising money for Foundation-backed programs, the Gala for the Arts also provides a terrific opportunity to recognize and thank the many supporters who continue to make the organization's efforts a great success.
"I certainly want to mention our patrons of the arts volunteers who give us so much time and energy. They are such a great help and truly are lovely people," Bryan said.
