Report: Illegal population growth slows in California, other states seeing large influx
California continues to receive a large influx of illegal immigrants, but the numbers aren't growing as fast as other states, according to a report released today.
Illegal immigrants have become more geographically dispersed, moving into states such as North Carolina and Georgia where relatively few had settled two decades ago, according to the analysis by the Pew Hispanic Center.
California still has the largest number of illegal immigrants in the country at 2.7 million, nearly double the amount in 1990.
But the Golden State's share of the illegal population has been cut nearly in half, from 42 percent to 22 percent, over that period, the report states.
In 2005, California's illegal population was 2.6 million.
The pattern started in the early 1990s, when the recession drove many illegal immigrants out of California to other states where jobs were more plentiful, said Jeffrey Passel, the center's senior demographer.
"We've seen over the last 10 to 15 years new immigration streams into these places because they have jobs," Passel said. "It isn't that California isn't getting undocumented immigrants. There's just a wider set of opportunities available to them than 20 years ago."
The new report, based on U.S. Census Bureau data, builds on previous work by the Pew Center on the size and growth of the illegal population. In 2008, the center estimated 11.9 million illegal immigrants lived in the United States.
Illegal immigrants make up 4 percent of the nation's population and 5.4 percent of its labor force. About 8.3 million illegal immigrants work in the United States, nearly two-thirds of them in the service, construction and manufacturing sectors. Illegal immigrants comprise about 10 percent of California's workforce, the report says.
Nearly half of illegal immigrant households are couples with children, more than twice the rate of U.S-born residents, the report states.
"We have an undocumented population that is largely made up of young families," Passel said.
Children of illegal immigrants make up 6.8 percent of students in kindergarten through grade 12. In California, the figure is about 10 percent. Most of these children were born in the United States and are citizens, the report says.
Illegal immigrants are more likely than U.S.-born residents to be poorly educated, live in poverty and have no health insurance, according to the report.
The report drew different reactions from opposite sides of the immigration debate.
"It speaks to the need for passage of some sort of comprehensive immigration bill that can deal with this complex population that is so finely woven into the fabric of U.S. society," said Miguel Tinker-Salas, a professor of Latin American history at Pomona College. "The problem is the current economic crisis and the political will to resolve this issue once and for all."
Roy Beck, executive director of Numbers USA, said the report strengthens the case against granting amnesty to illegal immigrants.
"There are more than 7 million illegal aliens holding non-agricultural jobs," said Beck, whose organization favors reduced immigration levels. "There are more than 7 million less-educated Americans who are unemployed and looking for jobs in those exact same occupations."
