Squeezing toward a lemonade record at Upland Lemon Festival

There wasn't anything particularly lemony about the Upland Lemon Festival.

There were the normal lemonade and various drink stands that are seen at any outdoor festival during the spring, summer and fall. But those were mixed in with Mexican, hot dog, Middle Eastern foods and stands selling sugary sweets.

On Sunday, however, there was at least one lemon spectacle. At Ninth Street and Third Avenue volunteers used small citrus presses to squeeze lemons for a world record.

Crates of lemons lay empty nearby the stage as volunteers from the Upland Key Club, Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts extracted lemon juice for the worlds' biggest lemonade.

The volunteers began working on their project Friday, said Raquel Moya who was in charge of the volunteers.

The goal is 1,100 gallons of lemonade, she said. They needed the juice from 14,000 lemons and by 2 p.m. Sunday had squeezed 10,000 she explained.

Once the lemonade is made, it will be photographed and witnesses will sign off on the giant drink.

While lemons were being sacrificed in one area of the festival, Cecilia and Wayne Garcia, members of the Soboba Indian tribe, were selling American Indian wares gathered from across the country.

In addition to making some cash, the Garcias had the chance to meet other American Indians, Cecilia Garcia said.

"We got a lot of compliments from Native American people," she said. "We have a lot of native
people here in Upland. They're happy to see the items."

And no festival is complete without some off-center humor.

In the 400 block of Ninth Street leading into the event, a simple cardboard sign attempted to take advantage of the influx of festivalgoers.

"Free parking for hot chicks. Or $5."
