Colton police chief meeting today with legislators Colton Police Chief Bob Miller met with nearly two dozen lawmakers today in Sacramento to urge them not to cut state-funded programs intended to keep kids from a life of crime.

Miller, and other members of non-profit group Fight Crime: Invest in Kids California, also met with officials in Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's office.

Programs discussed include high school dropout prevention efforts, after-school programs, high-quality preschool and interventions for juvenile offenders and troubled youth.

"Keeping youth in school and on track for graduation is good for public safety, the economy and the general well-being of our great state."

Miller could not be immediately reached for comment.

DA charges Ontario man in La Villa Restaurant slaying
Andrew Magallenez, 31, also faces several allegations of using a firearm and committing the crimes for the benefit of a gang, according to a complaint filed by the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office.

Magallenez, previously identified by authorities as Magallanez, has not yet been arraigned on the charges, said District Attorney's Office spokeswoman Susan Mickey.

Robert Chavez Jr., 21, of Colton was at La Villa Restaurant at 195 W. Valley Blvd. on March 7 when a fight broke out on the patio.

Minutes later, a gunman opened fire inside the club, striking Chavez and an unidentified 31-year-old man. Chavez died at the scene. The second victim was critically wounded.

Police initially arrested two other men, but they have since been released because prosecutors declined to charge them. They were not included in the complaint against Magallenez.
