Suspect in R.C. home burglaries was recently acquitted of murderOne of the reputed gang members charged this month with burglarizing homes in Rancho Cucamonga was tried and recently acquitted of murder in Riverside County.

Edward Lamar Scott, 20, was among 15 people charged with murder following the February 2006 shooting deaths of two men in Banning.

A Riverside Superior Court jury acquitted Scott of murder on Jan. 16, 2009, but found him guilty of a felony street-gang charge.

Scott was jailed awaiting trial after his arrest on suspicion of murder in February 2006, and was released from custody when he was acquitted of murder. His sentencing in the case is pending.

About three months after his release, Scott and five other people were arrested in connection with a recent string of residential burglaries in Rancho Cucamonga and other affluent communities along the 210 Freeway.

Scott and 16-year-old Anthony Hicks were arrested April 14 in the area of Candlewood Street and Lockhaven Avenue after a neighbor called sheriff's deputies to report suspicious activity.

When deputies arrived, they saw three men loading a TV into a parked car. Deputies arrested Scott and Hicks at the scene.

The third man -- 20-year-old Craisean Ryan Evans -- allegedly ran from the scene and was arrested April 17.

Prosecutors have accused the men of burglarizing a home earlier in the day on April 14 in the 7500 block of Center Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga.

Ex-OC sheriff to get sentence on felony convictionbuilding their sweeping public corruption case against former Orange County Sheriff Michael Carona.

Now, with sentencing at hand, the disgraced lawman and one-time rising GOP star is about to find out how much longer his legal ordeal will last.

Prosecutors are pressing for nine years in federal prison when Carona is sentenced Monday on a single felony count of witness tampering, while the defense wants only probation. Probation officials have recommended 6½ years behind bars.

Carona, once head of the nation's fifth-largest sheriff's department, will likely appeal any sentence that is not probation, his attorneys have said. He also has petitioned to remain free while appealing his conviction.

La Verne pair arrested in Rancho Cucamonga burglaries
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said Kristina Martin, 27, and Ronald Rodarte, 29, stole property from at least 10 victims. Deputies base the number on the stolen property they have found.

Deputies came to the 10000 block of Hillside Road about 2:30 a.m. Monday on a report of a suspicious vehicle and reckless driver.

Rodarte ran from the vehicle when deputies arrived. Deputies arrested Martin on suspicion of burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime and violating probation. She was booked into West Valley Detention Center. Deputies found about $8,000 in stolen property inside the vehicle.
Sheriff's detectives later searched Rodarte's home and arrested him.

It is the second burglary ring to be busted by the Sheriff's Department's Rancho Cucamonga station in two weeks.

Deputies arrested six members of a Moreno Valley gang in a rash of burglaries near the 210 Freeway from San Bernardino to Pasadena on April 14 and 17.

Supervisor Paul Biane's uncle up for county board seatSan Bernardino County Board of Supervisors' Chairman Gary Ovitt on Tuesday will recommend that Second District Supervisor Paul Biane's uncle, Michael Biane, be appointed to the county's assessment appeals board.

Michael Biane is a semi-retired real estate broker, which makes him more than qualified for the position, said Ovitt's spokesman, Burt Southard.

Ovitt would not comment.

Michael Biane, if appointed by the Board of Supervisors, would serve on one the assessment appeals board panels representing his nephew's district.

The assessment appeals board arbitrates disputes regarding the assessed value of property. Applicants go before the board and argue their case, and the panel has the power to reduce the value of the property, maintain it as is or increase it, said Becky Griffin of the clerk of the board's office.

Anyone appointed to the assessment appeals board must have a minimum of five years professional experience in California as either a certified public accountant, a licensed real estate broker, an attorney or a property appraiser accredited by a nationally recognized professional organization, according to the California Revenue and Taxation Code.

Southard said the county has seen an influx of cases brought before the assessment appeals board in the last year as a result of the economy and the foreclosure crisis.

The county is launching a new assessment appeals board Web site this week that is more navigator friendly and choc full of information, Griffin said

Supervisor Paul Biane was the catalyst behind the Inland Empire Economic Recovery Corp., a public-private nonprofit formed in December by the county as a means to address the county's foreclosure crisis. The plan: assist first-time homebuyers and buy foreclosed houses in the region in bulk, fix them up and resell them. In January, the Board of Supervisors approved giving $2.5 million to the nonprofit.

Prior to his election to the Board of Supervisors, Biane worked in the private sector with NAI Capitol Commercial Real Estate Services.

Michael Biane is the former owner of the now defunct Biane & Biane Realty, Inc. in Rancho Cucamonga.

The California Highway Patrol issued a Sig Alert following the 4:30 a.m. crash on the westbound 60 east of Central Avenue. Traffic backed up several miles to about Haven Avenue.

Officers diverted motorists off the freeway around the crash site.

Witnesses saw the pedestrian walk across the freeway from the center divider, said Officer Jaci Parent. It was unknown why he was on the freeway because it didn't appear he had a vehicle with him.

The duration of the closure was unknown. Officer recommended motorists use Haven Avenue to get to the 10 or 15 freeways to avoid the backup.
