Neighbors in the 900 block of Pennsylvania Avenue called 9-1-1 about 4:30 a.m. this morning after smelling smoke and spotting the three-bedroom home on fire.

Police arrived first but could not enter the house because the front door was locked. Officers broke out a window to try and ventilate the house while calling out for residents inside.

When firefighters arrived, they found the unidentified woman lying inside the home in the front doorway. She was taken to Redlands Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead about 5 a.m.

Crews searched for a man in his 70s who is believed to live there but discovered later that he had been taken to the hospital yesterday on an unrelated matter. One firefighter received a minor injury while making entry to the house.

It took 19 firefighters a half hour to knock down the flames. There was an estimated $200,000 in damage.

Firefighters said the blaze started in one of two back bedrooms, which was piled waist high with books, magazines and debris. They also found that batteries had been removed from two smoke detectors, said city spokesman Carl Baker.

Coroner's officials will release the victim's identity after notifying her family.

Redlands moving to end raves at Pharaoh's
The council held an emergency meeting today to address the all-night raves at the defunct theme park. Mayor Pro Tem Pat Gilbreath and Councilman Jerry Bean were not present for the 8 a.m. meeting.

Mayor Jon Harrison, Councilman Pete Aguilar and Councilman Mick Gallagher authorized the city's Community Development Department to start proceedings to revoke Aladdin Entertainment Group's conditional use permit at Pharaoh's.

The proceeding to revoke the conditional use permit wouldn't take place for 20 days, said city spokesman Carl Baker. The Redlands Planning Commission would be the body presiding over the hearing, since it is the body that issues conditional use permits.

Aladdin Entertainment Group is the company that owns Pharaoh's.

In closed session, Harrison, Aguilar and Gallagher voted unanimously to allow City Attorney Dan McHugh to pursue litigation as a way to deal with the rave events at Pharaoh's. McHugh did not discuss the city's plans for legal action.]]>

Plans squashed for Walgreens in downtown Redlands Plans for a Walgreens pharmacy in downtown Redlands were squashed this week after the City Council stalled at a tie vote.

The proposed project is a 14,350-square-foot Walgreens drugstore with an additional 2,040-square-foot retail space built on the northeast corner of Eureka Street and Redlands Boulevard. The corner is currently home to the now-abandoned McEwen's Furniture Gallery building, which was slated for demolition had the project been approved.

The Planning Commission denied the project on Aug. 12, 2008 with a 6-1 vote. The project's developers, Provident Investment Properties, appealed the decision to the City Council on Oct. 21, and again Tuesday.

Redlands man tries to attack security guard with sword, truck A Redlands man tried several times early Sunday to run over a security guard with his truck before arming himself with a sword, police said.

A passerby called Redlands police about 2 a.m. to report a reckless driver in a Ford F150 truck in the 1400 block of Brookside Avenue. Officers arrived just as 26-year-old Gabriel Paul Espinoza was approaching the apartment complex's guard with a sword, said city spokesman Carl Baker.

He was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. The guard was not believed to be injured.

Espinoza apparently argued with the guard and then jumped in his truck and tried to run him over twice, even driving down the sidewalk, after the guard walked away, Baker said. The guard jumped in a bush to escape the truck.

Police declined to say what the dispute was about.

Downtown Restaurant Row in Redlands?
The city has been striving to improve the downtown area and expect that public-private partnerships may be the way to go. The city's Commercial Rehabilitation Program is offering up to $50,000 in loan/façade easement purchases to businesses within the Redlands Redevelopment Project Area.

After nearly a year of working with the city, the first restaurant through this partnership plans to open its doors on April 13. Romano's Restaurant, at 330 Orange St., will be an Italian eatery with Chicago-style pizza, a sports bar and live entertainment.

Owners Gary Romano and Les Richter recently bought the building next door that once housed Beacon Printery. They plan to expand the restaurant with banquet facilities.

Anyone interested in information on the city's Commercial Rehabilitation Program may call (909) 335-4755.
