The diocese posted the following statements on its website

"I am deeply saddened by the shootings that took place Tuesday evening at the Khottongnae Retreat Camp. I ask all to join me in prayer for the victims of this tragic act and for the Sisters who run the retreat camp. In these troubling times when we are seeing so many acts of senseless violence, we must hold God's peace and grace in our hearts and ask for His strength to bear these tragedies," said Bishop Gerald Barnes.

"We are saddened by what has happened and we ask for the prayers of the community. We will be joined soon by our Congregational leader and other members of our community. Our retreat camp will be closed for the next month as we come to terms with Tuesday's events," said Sister Thaddeus Suh, C.K.S.J., community supervisor.

A gunman opened fire at a Korean Christian retreat Tuesday in Temecula, killing one and wounding three others, authorities said. The retreat camp falls under the jurisdiction of the San Bernardino Diocese. The gunman was believed to be among the injured at the Kkottongnae Retreat Camp, and investigators were unsure what prompted the attack.

At least two of the victims were critically injured.

Jews in Israel and worldwide prepare for Passover
The holiday, which marks the Hebrews' exodus from slavery in Egypt as recounted in the Bible, begins Wednesday night with a special meal known as the seder.

Beyond being an opportunity for extended families to get together, the seder is focused on recounting the story of the exodus, especially to children, so the tradition is preserved from generation to generation.

"The history of the Jewish people begins with the exodus from Egypt," said Rabbi David Rosen, interfaith director at the American Jewish Committee.

Passover, he said, is the root of Jewish "understanding of marginalization and vulnerability, and the emphasis on sensitivity to the widow, the stranger, those who are different from you."

"You have to know oppression to know redemption," Rosen said.

Report: LA cardinal subject of federal probe
Citing two unidentified law enforcement persons familiar with the case, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday that Cardinal Roger M. Mahony is among those being investigated by a federal grand jury to determine if he failed to keep children safe from predatory priests.

Los Angeles U.S. attorney's spokesman Thom Mrozek says his office has no comment on the reports.

Mahony's attorney, J. Michael Hennigan, tells the Times that federal prosecutors contacted the archdiocese and requested information on individual priests. But Hennigan says he has been informed that Mahony is not a target of the inquiry.

Hennigan and archdiocese spokesman Tod Tamberg did not immediately return calls by The Associated Press seeking comment. ]]>

Diocese seeks $20M from breakaway Episcopalians
The Diocese of Pittsburgh, which oversees the 20 local parishes that stayed with the U.S. Episcopal Church, said the breakaway group has no legal right to the assets since it is no longer part of the denomination.

Spokesman Rich Creehan said the church petitioned the Court of Common Pleas for the assets after its requests for them were "ignored" by the breakaway parishes. ]]>

Don't worry: Redlands Auto Center is still open
The Auto Center, which sells vehicles made by Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Mazda, has not closed -- nor is it in danger of closing.

"We're just repaving the lot," said Jim Fortney, used car dealership manager at the Redlands Auto Center. "People always get worried when they see an empty lot."

Calif. court sides with Episcopals over property
In an unanimous decision, the California Supreme Court ruled that the property belongs to the Episcopal Church because the parishes agreed to abide by the mother church's rules, which include specific language about property ownership.

St. James Church in Newport Beach, All Saints Church in Long Beach and St. David's Church in North Hollywood pulled out of the 2.1 million-member national Episcopal Church in 2004 and sought to retain property ownership. ]]>
