FAA releases cause of deadly Big Bear plane crash
In a Federal Aviation Administration report released this week, investigators said Carson, 52, crashed about 11 miles west of Big Bear City Airport because he failed to clear the mountainous terrain.

Carson left Flabob Airport in Rubidoux about 9:30 p.m. during his regular 20-minute flight home from work in his Cirrus SR22 fixed-wing aircraft.

When Carson didn't arrive home by midnight, his wife called the Riverside County Sheriff's Department to report him missing. Wreckage from the plane was found the following morning.

Investigators said visibility was about 10 miles and there were scattered clouds at 1,300 and 800 feet when Carson left Flabob. The clouds and rain occasionally obscured the mountains.

The moon didn't alleviate the visibility problem because only 10 percent of it could be seen that night, the U.S. Naval Observatory said.
